Lyr Req: She Touched You (Jim Herd/The Fureys)

Subject: Lyr Req: Forgotitten Fureys Song
From: GUEST,GUEST

Hi,
I had an old Fureys tape years ago. There was a song on it but I can't remember the title. The refrain went something like: And maybe you'll grow to like the colour of her hair and maybe ..... the crazy clothes she wears...

Does anyone know the song and who wrote it? Can't find a trace on youtube and considering everything else by the fureys is there wondering if I've got the wrong artists

Many thanks

From: GUEST,Eddie1 - Sans cookie as ever

I know my memory plays tricks with the years and I wondered if you were thinkling of this? Eddie Furey certainly recorded it with Finbar accompanying
"Her Father Didn't Like Me Anyway"

HER FATHER DIDN'T LIKE ME ANYWAY
(Gerry Rafferty)

The coat she wore still lies upon the bed
The book I gave her that she never read
She left without a single word to say
Her father didn't like me anyway.

She always needed more than I could give
She wasn't happy with the way we lived
I didn't feel like asking her to stay
Her father didn't like me anyway.

Daddy never knew just what she'd seen in me
He said I was going nowhere
Maybe if we'd talked, he'd have seen something in me
But Daddy didn't really care.

To tell the truth I didn't have the nerve
I know I only got what I deserved
So now she's taken leave of me today
Her father didn't like me anyway.

The song was written by Gerry Rafferty

Hope this helps
Eddie

Hi, thanks for replies but not the one I was thinking of... it was very early fureys when they used to do some songs by singer/songwriters on the circuit.
I think the opening verse went something along the lines of:
'You've sung your song as best you can there's no more you can do..
then basically he falls for girl in folk club audience, seems a bit of a hippy, hence the refrain - 'you don't even like the colour of her hair (something)... or the crazy clothes she wears.' Finally he is reconsidering after some post folk-club lovemaking that 'maybe you'll grow to like the colour of her hair... and those crazy clothes she wears'
My memory may be a bit hazy it is a long time ago. Got a feeling it was George Furey that sang it.
Thanks for help

I think it's called "She Touched You". Bobby Eaglesham used to do it. No memory of the writer so far though. Haud oan, what about Jim Herd?

Gee, "She Touched You" really is a nice song. Here's a recording of the song by Caffery-McGurk
The Caffery-McGurk Website says that "She Touched You" was written by Jim Herd in the 1970s.

I see it's true that The Fureys also recorded the song: Anybody have time to come up with a transcription?

Thanks everyone - it was great to hear the Fureys version again and the Caffrey - McGurk version is great - they really do something strange - but lovely - with the harmony!

SHE TOUCHED YOU
(Jim Herd)
As recorded by The Fureys on "May We All Someday Meet Again" (2013)

You sung your songs the best you can, you've done what you must do,
And now you're feelin' tired and cold; the night is almost through.
When a young girl came and asked you to join her for a drink,
You never even stop to think—

That you don't even like the color of her hair,
You know you could never take to the crazy clothes she wears.
But she made you feel uneasy; you just stood there and stared,
For somewhere deep inside, she's touched you.

Now that you've had your drink, you take her hand and go.
You've six more towns to do this week; your money's running low.
And she knows that you're a trav'lin' man; you must be on your way,
So pretend you didn't hear her when she said you might stay.

For you don't even like the color of her hair,
You know you could never take to them crazy clothes she wears.
But she made you feel uneasy; you just stood there and stared,
For somewhere deep inside, she's touched you.

So many things that you must do, and places you must be,
A thousand reasons in this world why a singer must be free.
But something in them young girl's eyes are tryin' hard to say,
And for the first time in your life you think you might stay.

And maybe you'd grow to like the color of her hair,
You know you should never judge someone by the clothes they wear
She made you feel uneasy, you know her from somewhere,
So maybe you might stay and love her.

Thanks Jim. It really is a smashing song. I've really enjoyed listening to it again after all these years. Thanks again to TF who identified it from the few fragmented lyrics that I could remember

This a bit of a coincidence .. I was clearing my loft this week and one of the things I came across was a small book of songs I had bought at a folk festival (Thurso) in the late 70's. The book was one which Jim (Herd) was selling at the event - although it looked a bit DIY 6 pages/songs typewritten (yes on a typewriter -whatever that was !) and a cover with a photocopied picture of Jim. But the best thing was the six songs inside -

It could be Jesus
Time song
Victoria
Song for a Pied Piper
Do you really care about conservation
and of course ... She touched you

Like yourself it became one of my favorite songs ever since and I used to sing it at almost every gig - I would be happy to scan a copy to you but as a newby to this thread /forum thing I am not sure what the procedure is. If its of any interest feel free to advise me how i could do this - gollach79@blueyonder.co.uk
all the best Denny
