BS: We're going to Ontario (again)!

This might have to be our final trip before we get too old, too poor and too crook to travel, so we are hoping to make it a good one.

Late September we will be flying to Toronto (our younger son lives there) and spending the next several weeks there, although we will be touring some of Ontario late in October......Goderich, North Bay, Tamworth (we live in Tamworth, New South Wales, and wanted to visit our namesake town) then back to Toronto before flying to visit friends in Victoria, B.C.

We've been before, done our research, but is there anything we shouldn't miss while there?

It may not be on your route, but here's a place in Ontario I have never forgotten:

Ouimet Canyon

How cold will Ontario be by late October?

What a lovely place! No, sadly you are right, we won't be anywhere near there.

Parts of Ontario will be getting quite cool by late October, on our last visit three years ago we had light snow.

Too bad about the canyon, but at least you know about it now, so if somebody tells you Ontario is boring, you can deny it.

I'm glad you are prepared for cold weather. One benefit of that is that the mosquitoes' wings have iced up, and they move a lot slower.

Just kidding!

I hope you have a wonderful trip.

Well, if I were going, I'd drive the length of the Niagara River. It's not only the Falls that's interesting there. Have a good time.

The Niagara River is, indeed, quite impressive. The rapids, just above the falls, still take my breath away. Having grown up in the region, I spent many a childhood summer on Ontario's beaches. As I recall, both Montreal and Quebec are fascinating places as well. Next time I'm back there, I hope to take in some of that fine, french canadian music!

JennieG, you'll be there right in time to see the most fabulous fall colors on the planet! Late September through mid-October -- Be prepared to be amazed and awed!

Victoria is lovely, too. I haven't been there in years, but would like to go back again someday.

Have a wonderful trip!

KT

Goderich is pleasant enough any time of year, but the colours along the Maitland River may still be nice, though well along, in late October. From there it's only a couple of hours to the Bruce Peninsula/Bruce Trail/Georgian Bay etc. I have a home in Goderich and the family has a cottage on the Bruce Peninsula.

Google Earth, Street View, and Images will help you decide.

Anywhere along the Niagara Escarpment from Tobermory (at the tip of the aforementioned Bruce Peninsula) to Niagara Falls will be worth the trip.

Elora is nice, some major Scottish guitar talent there too.

Have you done Ottawa? Lots of cool things to see there. National art gallery, war museum, etc.

Peace, Mooh.

If you do go to Niagara Falls, there's a lovely little park there, we used to know it as Dufferin Islands- right off the main drag near the falls- great spot for walks, picnics, a swim if you happen to be there on a hot fall day. Should be beautiful while you're there with the fall colors!

The Lake Huron shore, including Goderich, can suffer from severe weather. We raced a waterspout back home from the beach in Southampton. We lost.

The Cuckoo's Nest Folk Club in London, Ontario, starts its new season - as usual - with a concert from the Friends of Fiddlers Green. That's on Sunday, 13 September.

On Sunday, 4 October, they have NUA. Based in Toronto, NUA has three award-winning members: fiddle player James Law, guitarist Graeme McGillivray and bodhrán player Jacob McCauley.

We visited Niagara Falls on a previous trip, and found it hard to believe that - coming from the world's driest continent as we do - there is so much water on the planet!

KT, the autumn colours is why we are going at that time of year. Himself made noises about going in summer but Toronto's fearsome humidity would do for me, I'm afraid.....besides which, Oz just doesn't have fall colours like Canada's beauty. I think there is only one native Ozzie tree which is deciduous, all others are evergreen.

Mooh, we're looking forward to visiting Goderich again! It's a lovely town, and the colours along the Maitland River were gorgeous last time. We were curious about the big white house on the hill, overlooking the river - is it a private home?

My sister and her husband, now both dead, used to live in Haileybury.
Haleybury was named after the town across the Atlantic, where Malthus taught. If you get that far north, give me a report: I imagine things have changed a bit in 50 years.

Water... Ontario's border is on four of the Great Lakes so you'll be in a good spot for water!

henryp, that sounds like fun......however, we won't be going to London!

Recently I found out that North Bay, ON., has a ukulele group. My friend contacted them and I will be able to spend an evening playing with them on a borrowed uke - really looking forward to that, my fingers will be itching to play again by then.

JennieG...The big white house is a private home, but you can drive up that way and see the lesser homes along the ridge, plus there's a nice trail along the former railway bed from the harbour, across the river, along the ridge and on out of town. Same trail also heads south to the beach.

If you haven't been here since The Square was redone, there are new sidewalks, trees, planters, a few newish businesses.

Peace, Mooh.

No, we were in the car driving past. However, this morning we saw snow piled up in a parking lot - but we didn't touch it either because it dirty, oily and mushy-looking. But it was snow.
