Archie Fisher wrote a poem for him, which was quoted on the back of his first LP sleeve : "The Ballad Singer" I watched a piper take the wind that blew around his hair, And with the supple leather lead The hard black wood and brittle reed A dance into the air. I watched a boy that stood with men A whistle at his tongue Breathe the old and smokey air into his breast, Then with his careful fingers, Make it young. This always gave us the opportunity to offer him a booking at our place when he was over and I have fond memories of his nights at Tigerfolk (or Traditions at the Tiger as it was called then). One memory is of his crafting of one of the final paragraphs of Joyce's Finnegan's Wake into a song. He used to preface it by saying it was an example of the lyrical nature of Joyce's writing: 'Forgivemequick, I'm going! Bubye! And you, pluck your watch, forgetmenot. Your evenlode. So save to jurna's end! My sights are swimming thicker on me by the shadows to this place. I sow home slowly now by own way, moy-valley way. Towy I too, rathmine. Ah, but she was the queer old skeowsha anyhow, Anna Livia, trinkettoes! And sure he was the quare old buntz too, Dear Dirty Dumpling, foostherfather of fingalls and dotthergills. He was a great inspiration, his incredible guitar playing (as if you were listening to two players at the same time) and beautiful, haunting songs like Slievenamon, The Bunnan Bui and James Connolly. He performed in the Netherlands several times in the seventies, my new born son gave him his first smile in life! A true gentleman gone, rest in peace. |
