Roger Mills and Nicola Christie are moving to the Dartmoor village of South Zeal , near Okehampton, at the end of this month (September).Gloucestershire, especially Cheltenham ,Tewkesbury and Winchcombe ,are steadily becoming more noisy and more overcrowded and overdeveloped and not able to offer us old folks ( 68 & 71 ) the peace and quiet that we would like ! We have,in a short time, made many friends in South Zeal , where all the houses have names, not numbers, and the people are all very friendly and welcoming; A fine place to spend our declining years ! We have a spare room to offer if anyone wants to visit !! So farewell to all our friends in Gloucestershire, and thankyou for putting up with us .

Let us know in advance if you want to come, Kitty ; we're about a couple of hundred yards (if that ) from the Oxenham Arms and the Shop (we chose carefully !).

Thanks,Terry ; yes, Exeter is a lot closer to Sidmouth than Tewkesbury ; we could be day-trippers ,although I prefer to camp (in Axemouth) ,weather permitting (we can't STAND the noisy donkeys at the OTHER campsite !).

Thanks too to cousin Will ; you can come and stay any time ; I'll PM you as soon as we've moved ( and got a telephone / internet provider , as Talk Talk don't cover that area ).

There is a specific reason for reviving this thread. Member leeneia, as a guest, asked a question, and the posts on this thread have yet to show an answer. I got my info from a site called southzeal.eu although no doubt there are other places with the same info. Let's see if my explanation works the first time through:

In the feudal period, the Lord lived in a Manor on his holdings, and his holdings were large enough to include villages surrounding his domicile. The title/name "Zeal" is what has survived of a word from the kind of English spoken in feudal times -- outside my area of expertise -- Old English? Middle English?

The village known today as South Zeal was not, so to speak, Manor Central; that honor belonged to another village nearby, I think the name given was Tawton or Thaxton or something. Digression here, but that explains also why South Zeal has a mere chapel and no full-fledged church; the church is nearby in "Manor Central."

What South Zeal did have, while it did not have the Feudal Lord's domicile, was the Manor HALL. Now, in the English of the day, they did not use the word HALL; they called it a ZELE.
This puts me in mind of HochDeutsch and its word "SAAL," wonder if they are related or not.

And so, the word for Hall -- "Zele" -- over time changed to Zeal, which became the name of the village attached to the manor, to the south. How's that?

and here's me thinking the name came from the enthusiasm of the sote (since we are talking Middle English).

Thanks for the explanation, keberoxu. That's interesting.

The nearby village with the Parish Church and the pub (The Seven Stars , now shut down and forlornly empty )is called South Tawton. Interestingly, the town of North Tawton is MILES away.
The Dutch word for hall, chamber, etc is ZAAL .
Last year I sat in the gardens of the Oxenham Arms and played with some excellent musicians from Bude ; I hope to repeat the experience next month !!
