09 Sep 15 - 05:41 PM (#3736503) Subject: 2015 Portsmouth Maritime Festival From: Bat Goddess The 2015 (16th Annual) Portsmouth (NH) Maritime Folk Festival (PMFF) will be taking place September 26th and 27th, in downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire. We've got a great lineup -- The Johnson Girls, Cliff Haslam, Nicole Singer, Craig Edwards, Jean Pauly, Becky Tracy & Keith Murphy, Dan Milner, Chris Koldewey, Jeff Warner, and lots of local talent such as Two Old Friends, London Julie, Great Bay Sailor, Mudhook…Oh, and me, Linn Schulz. There's a full performer list with bios, etc. at the website -- 2015 PMFF -- along with the schedule, a printable PDF of the schedule, and much more. There WILL be a slight tweaking to the schedule grid in the next couple days -- the performance on Saturday at John Paul Jones House will start at noon and performers at "Off to Sea Once More" and "Setting Sail" will swap positions (f'rinstance, Mudhook first, followed by Great Bay Sailor at John Paul Jones House). Also the order at 4:00-4:45 at Book & Bar on Sunday will swap positions. Everything is FREE! From the music at historic houses to the Saturday night concert, street busking, mini-concerts and open sings (TWO venues on Saturday), closing shanty blast on Sunday... Please check the online schedule. There have been a couple more venue changes this year. The festival actually kicks off with a lecture Thursday night at the Portsmouth Athenaeum -- 2015 PMFF -- on Black Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolution and Black Submariners in the US Navy 1940-1975 and at the regular Friday evening trad session at The Press Room (4:30-9:00) on Daniel St. to get everyone in a nautical mood. Nick's show runs from 7:00-11:00 PM Eastern time. You can hear it by going to "The Folk Revival" and clicking on "Listen Live Online". Besides interviews with me (Linn Schulz) and other festival performers, Nick is featuring a live sea music session (or as close to a session as we can recreate in the studio) with a bunch of festival performers from this year and past years and several local Worcester, MA musicians. However, I'll be hanging with my cousin, whom I haven't seen for 18 years. Now, I may miss tomorrow, too. Allergy started a couple days ago, got really nasty last night, better today, but I still feel crappy. My neck actually hurts, like a sore throat on the outside. I suppose it's my lymph nodes, but it's weird. Will see how it goes. |

This is in conjunction with the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival. 7 PM in the Research Library. Black Submariners It is FREE, but it would be a good idea to call the Athenaeum and reserve a seat. Call 603-431-2538 to make reservations. "African American soldiers and sailors saw extensive action during World War II in nearly every theatre of operations. Though few in number, Black submariners played an important role in manning the navy submarines, many built at Portsmouth, which wrought havoc against Japanese naval and merchant vessels. Limited by the U.S. Navy's segregation policies to service as officers' stewards, many Black sailors in fact performed combat duty with great bravery and distinction, including such men as Walter Wilson, the battle-station helmsman aboard the legendary submarine Trigger; Bronze Star medalist George Lytle aboard Drum; and Arthur Brown, who participated in the rescue and care of many refugees liberated from Japanese-held islands while serving aboard Narwhal. Glenn Knoblock's talk, based on hundreds of interviews with World War II veterans and years of research, leaves the audience with a better understanding of the Submarine Force during World War II and appreciation for America's undersea warriors."
