Ralf, the lyrics have been posted months ago in this forum, but the title of the thread was not informative. Either you do a forum search (body) for "on the one road" (without the "") or you take this shortcut

Hi Bob
I don't have the time to post the lyrics here on the mudcat, but you can get them here along with the sheet music Prof's site
Cheers

Just for the sake of completeness: We had the lyrics in the Forum two years ago. I don't know why I remember a thread title that's not very informative: Obscure Irish Soldier's song. However, on Prof's site you'll get all you want to know.

In Dingle, in the mid seventies, I used to get a kick out of a version which represented that Ireland stretched from west of Trali west to slae head. It went, Northmen, southmen, comrades all, Dingle, Dunquinn, on to Annascaul... We re on the one road... Its funny if you know Kerry. Slan Larry Otway

I love that map of Ireland on profs site which I've just visited for the first time, (and it's grand).,

Click on Tipp for Polkas and Derry for Songs. No logic to it, but it's a bit more fun than a normal old list.

But I also went back to the old thread that Wolfgag gave us a link to - and that ended with Martin Ryan speculating that it dated from "The Emergency" (which everyone else called World War II), from soldiers in camps in the Republic, where they were getting ready in case England or Germany decided to invade. He said he'd try to find out.

I'd always assumed it was much later, but only because I'd never heard it before the 70s. Any info from anybody?

I saw that old thread too! Went out of my head. I'll get round to it. I think I've heard old army officers talk about it. Its certainly older than the Wolfe Tones, if that's what you're thinking! Didn't Josef Locke (who died recently) record it many years ago?

Regards
