Lyr Req: Farmer Giles

Last night at a concert by Cataleya I heard a suite by Paul Patterson, Westerly Winds.
I'd never heard of him, but it turned out to be based on West Country folk songs.
All easily recognised except I don't know the 'official' words to the first, I was (silently)singing along
"Tomatoes are soft and they don't hurt the skin
But this one was hard, it was packed in a tin"

The weblink says it's called Farmer Giles. I couldn't find it here except a mention as a cod-rustic music hall song in the thread about Buttercup Joe. Any offers?

The audience were mostly of a generation that sang these songs at school, and heard them on the Wireless, so we found it hard to keep quiet.

There is a long thread already on this song titled something like 'Tomatoes don't hurt'

Tomatoes are soft and they don't hurt the skin

If you Google the above line just as is--no quotation marks--numerous site will have takes of it to offer, including two previous threads from Mudcat, one at 47 posts and t'other at 72.

Thanks, I enjoyed re-reading that old thread.

But it doesn't quite answer my question. That is the parody version that I remember.
Is there an original West Country folk song called Farmer Giles?

That looks like it. Thanks.
Though the 'spoken introduction had me confused at fist - I've heard that sung to a different tune.

Glad you got it, Mo. Good work, Tradsinger.
