Just noticed a BBC news item regarding a petition against Paloma Faith's rendition of the Official Rugby World Cup Anthem 2015...

I thought.. ok.. the usual obsessive nutters with nothing better to do with their lives...

So I googled and youtubed...

F@ck me, it really is that shite.. I never want to hear it again.

It truly is that dire on every level.

Now it's difficult not to like Paloma Faith,
and I feel sorry for her having to defend recording such a dreadful dirge...

BTW, I decline providing a link because I would feel bad about inflicting this effin terrible experience on any other mudcatters ears....

I've been grumbling about it to Her Squeakiness. Didn't they listen to it before letting it out or did they just think Paloma Faith's name was good enough?

.. and I've now just listened to Sam Smith's newly announced theme song for the new Bond movie...

oh dear... five and a half minutes... errrmmm.. le't just say it's not the most memorable Bond song and leave it at that..

For the record.. I have no opinion on Sam Smith, it's difficult to think or care much about him at all...

..Help me.. I have this worrying sense that I might be slowly turning into a grumpy old mudcatter...😬

Who the hell is Paloma Faith anyway? Never heard of her before and never want to again!

I saw nothing wrong with the rendition of the same song from the last rugby world cup - if indeed it actually needs a song. .... and, whilst they're at it, perhaps "Ingerland" could find a suitable alternative to "god save our royal parasite".

I quite like Paloma Faith but yes the version is dire! Just a horrible warble. Worse than Joss Stone's version of Bogle's "No Man's Land" and that is saying something!Seemingly Paloma isn't bothered about all the criticsm of her version. I think she's probably putting a brave face on. Didn't she publically beg to be given the Bond theme? Not heard the Sam Smith one yet!

BTW the tune is sort of a knockoff of Holst's "Jupiter".

Thanks Jack for stating the obvious, that we all already knew...

It wasn't at all obvious to me until it had nearly finished, and the resemblance is not at all close. My assumption was that the whole thing was a new composition. Was she covering a more recognizable take on the tune? (I've never seen rugby on TV so I wouldn't have heard any other theme song for it).

my mrs is the nationalistic celt rugby fanatic in our house...

I just wander in and out every now and then to check the score
so I can take the piss when her country is losing....

As for this dire song, at first I was in mind of John Lennon's "Imagine" - another of my least favourite songs...

then I knew I knew what the tune actually was... but couldn't quite remember what...
and realised it was just not worth the bother of thinking about...

Then the song stopped playing.. and I opened this thread...

Anyway here's a better one for England fans...

Jack,

It goes back to Holst via 'I Vow To Thee My Country'. If memory serves, the original Kiri Te Kanawa version was much closer.

Would https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oMmKFUsQ75c be more appropriate?

Whatever is thought of the actual song I think Kiri's original version is a far superior version.

Agreed AC, but the 2007 version is not bad: a compilation including Bryn Terfel, Katherine Jenkins. Lesley Garrett, Hayley Westenra and a selection of supporters: also on Youtube.
But Paloma - aaarrgghhh and yukkkkk! She has almost twice as many dislikes as likes for her video!

Aye TB I was only comparing the Kiri version with Paloma's. I quite like most of her stuff but she seems to have a problem not realising when she's sqeaking/squawking. One of her recent singles (sorry name escapes me) has a really high note which she just squeaks on. We were watching her live show at the Proms on TV though and were both waiting for said note on said song to come and she hit it fine when singing live without any horrendous squeaks. Which was most peculiar as I'd have expected the recorded version to be the better but it wasn't.

Great tune, ever since Holst wrote it. The word play of "world in union" was clever, and powerful, though the lyrics built on that phrase could have been so much better.

Paloma Faith's version I thought was terrible. As bad as those solo singers they use at big American sports events to massacre their national anthem. No, I exaggerate, nithing could be as bad - but almost as bad.

Where can people sign that petition against it?

Well I just saw what the Pope had to sit through during his USA visit: must be a close second!

I guess "world in league" had been ruled out.

Given the way rugby politics works it's suprising they don't already have a Provisional Rugby Union, a Continuity Rugby Union and a United Free Rugby League.
