BS: Steam loco question

A friend of mine seems to remember as a boy, seeing a Royal Scot class loco in blue livery. I think he is mistaken as I'm sure they were either black or green. Any thoughts or memories?

An old pal of mine was fireman on the Flying Scotsman, LNER I think Green Paint.

It's confusing as there were Royal Scot class locos and The Royal Scot itself - the LMS counterpart to the Flying Scotsman, once hauled by Royal Scots but later by more powerful Princess Royals and Coronations. An image search on Google shows a Hornby model of The Royal Scot pulled by a Coronation class (City of Bristol) in British Rail blue livery.

Let's try North Euston's Google Image Search.

PS : A Google image search for 'Blue Royal Scot Class' brings up a jig-saw puzzle and a Wren Model both in BR Blue. Might we accept this as evidence of of a BR Blue Royal Scott prototype?

PPS : The above mentioned jigsaw image comes from a 2011 entry in the blog Steam Trains and Jigsaw Puzzles. Looking around for more information on the artist I came across this on the Bear Alley blog:

I collect steam train jigsaw puzzles as a hobby and currently own around 400 different examples. T. E. North was a prolific railway/transport artist during teh mid 20th century and his poster/illustrative style artwork was ideal for jigsaw puzzles. Manufacturers included Victory, Ian Allen/Ponda, Valentines, Philmar (all wood) and Good Companion/Tower Press (cardboard). I wrote a book on the subject of steam trains and jigsaw puzzles three yearsa ago but always found [North] difficult to research. One snippet I can add to your own research is that a man named Thomas Edward North died in Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham - 16 April 1985 (born 25 September 1916). Cottingham, of course, is close to Hull, where we suspect he worked from.

Given the above I think we can accept Mr North's illustration as an authentic representation of a Fowler Royal Scot Class loco in BR Caledonian Blue, confirming the OP's friend's recollection, assuming it was prior to 1952.

I have a jigsaw of GWR King class "King George V" in the experimental BR blue livery. There was a card kit available years ago of a Merchant Navy class in the same livery along with, I think, a Duchess, also deep blue.

This was in the early days of BR, soon after the formation in 1948, and a number of experimental colours were tried out. There was a model of "Brecon Castle" on sale in OO in the pale green livery at one time.

It all happened again a few years later trying out different colours for diesels, blue, green, maroon and sand liveries on the D1000s.

Needless to say neither of the preserved Royal Scots are in Caledonian Blue livery. No. 6100, the Royal Scot itself is in LMS Crimson Lake whilst no, 6115, the Scots Guardsman, is variously seen in LMS Lined Black and BR Brunswick Green.

Another T. E. North masterpiece!

Sorry to drift the thread a little, but my old pal used to tell me lovely stories of his time on the Railways.
Apparently there was a hierarchy among railway employees, when you got really old, they made you a driver.
My old pal never made driver but he was a top fireman. "The drivers valet, the man who made the smoke come out the lum"

He used to tell me that when they approached a tunnel at speed he had to seal up all the windows and shut the firebox doors or they got showered by white hot cinders.....what a life, but he loved it dearly, I'm sure he told me that he fired the engine that held the Perth to London speed record

Contrary to my above post of 13 Oct 15 - 09:47 AM, here's the Scots Guardsman liveried in BR Blue :

In 1948 the newly formed British Railways had to decide on the future colour schemes for rolling stock. To this end some locos were painted in green, others in blue and, following an exhibition at Marylebone for the BTC, the choice fell on green. The same process took place with coaches resulting in the 'plum and spilt milk' colour scheme. Don't ask me which locos served as 'models' for the colour scheme.

The answer to that one may be in "Locomotive Panorama", volume 2, by E. S. Cox. Unfortunately, my copy disintegrated years ago, so I'm guessing a bit here.

North Euston: yes that's the jigsaw that I have.

A bit of artistic licence going on as it shows the train as having crossed Brunel's Tamar bridge, but King class locos were supposedly not allowed to cross it due to weight restrictions.

Mallard was always blue in my day.
It still is.

But the steam loco that pulled the train I traveled on from Wolverhampton Low level was distinctly dark brown with a circle and lion motif in cream and some other colours. I just can't remember where we were going, but it was the seaside.

FWIW Wolverhampton Low Level Station was disused in the 1960's

Snow (1963) - Geoffrey Jones | BFI National Archive)

Great thread & great fun! I was North Euston by the way - a lover of such things by way of general folklore but I jump off several stops before terminal enthusiasm...

There's a forgotten Radio Ballad actually a TV Ballad / Film (!!) featuring Ewan MacColl - also at the BFI. Details here:

BTW to play BFI films from overseas you might need to set up a UK-connected VPN - say Hola or ExpatShield or something.

When BR took over the railways ???1948 they had mixed stock with mixed colours. The larger Peppercorn and Gresley Pacifics, the Stanier Pacifics and some Navy class, along with many of the 'Kings' class, were painted in dark blue (later changed to lighter blue for long haulers), some of which ended up on "Royal Scot" duties.

Take a look under "Liveries" on BR takeover

VPNs don't cot much. But you get a service without intrusive ads. - and likely a faster connection. Look here:

https://www.vpncompare.co.uk/

BTW they're good for watching t.v. from most countries, except that the Beeb is starting to block access.

Got an email from Lurie Austinser who apparently scours the web for mention of VPNs. He writes:

Hi
I have noticed that you wrote about finding the best VPN in your article mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=158329.
Thanks, it is really important for people to be aware of their privacy!

While vpncompare.co.uk/ is a great site to find a vpn, I think you may want to share also www.vpnmentor.com which includes not only the top 10 vpns, but rather all vpns out there (more than 230).

Isn't it fair to also let users know of the underdog vpns that are maybe less known, but do a good job?
Thanks in advance,
Lurie

Being the Royal Scot and all evidence is model &/or painting I think we can use the Scottish legal term "case unproven".

And the painting/jigsaw has taken liberties with the bend in the track
see this aerial image or Goggle aerial map so how many other artistic licences have been taken out?
