An image search on Google shows a Hornby model of The Royal Scot pulled by a Coronation class (City of Bristol) in British Rail blue livery. |

Looking around for more information on the artist I came across this on the Bear Alley blog: I collect steam train jigsaw puzzles as a hobby and currently own around 400 different examples. T. E. North was a prolific railway/transport artist during teh mid 20th century and his poster/illustrative style artwork was ideal for jigsaw puzzles. Manufacturers included Victory, Ian Allen/Ponda, Valentines, Philmar (all wood) and Good Companion/Tower Press (cardboard). I wrote a book on the subject of steam trains and jigsaw puzzles three yearsa ago but always found [North] difficult to research. One snippet I can add to your own research is that a man named Thomas Edward North died in Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham - 16 April 1985 (born 25 September 1916). Cottingham, of course, is close to Hull, where we suspect he worked from. Given the above I think we can accept Mr North's illustration as an authentic representation of a Fowler Royal Scot Class loco in BR Caledonian Blue, confirming the OP's friend's recollection, assuming it was prior to 1952. |

There was a card kit available years ago of a Merchant Navy class in the same livery along with, I think, a Duchess, also deep blue. This was in the early days of BR, soon after the formation in 1948, and a number of experimental colours were tried out. There was a model of "Brecon Castle" on sale in OO in the pale green livery at one time. It all happened again a few years later trying out different colours for diesels, blue, green, maroon and sand liveries on the D1000s. |

No. 6100, the Royal Scot itself is in LMS Crimson Lake whilst no, 6115, the Scots Guardsman, is variously seen in LMS Lined Black and BR Brunswick Green. |

Apparently there was a hierarchy among railway employees, when you got really old, they made you a driver. My old pal never made driver but he was a top fireman. "The drivers valet, the man who made the smoke come out the lum" He used to tell me that when they approached a tunnel at speed he had to seal up all the windows and shut the firebox doors or they got showered by white hot cinders.....what a life, but he loved it dearly, I'm sure he told me that he fired the engine that held the Perth to London speed record |

To this end some locos were painted in green, others in blue and, following an exhibition at Marylebone for the BTC, the choice fell on green. The same process took place with coaches resulting in the 'plum and spilt milk' colour scheme. Don't ask me which locos served as 'models' for the colour scheme. |

A bit of artistic licence going on as it shows the train as having crossed Brunel's Tamar bridge, but King class locos were supposedly not allowed to cross it due to weight restrictions. |

But the steam loco that pulled the train I traveled on from Wolverhampton Low level was distinctly dark brown with a circle and lion motif in cream and some other colours. I just can't remember where we were going, but it was the seaside. FWIW Wolverhampton Low Level Station was disused in the 1960's |

The larger Peppercorn and Gresley Pacifics, the Stanier Pacifics and some Navy class, along with many of the 'Kings' class, were painted in dark blue (later changed to lighter blue for long haulers), some of which ended up on "Royal Scot" duties.
