Can't say I'm familiar with Dr. John. I found a YouTube video of I Thought I Heard New Orleans Say":

This Website (click) has an excerpt of the lyrics:

Red beans and pinball machines/Chicory coffee and hoodoo queens/File gumbo and pralines/Everything's hot down in New Orleans/I thought I heard New Orleans say/They is a street parade/Down on Esplanade/If it rains we'll feel no pain/Cause we gonna march today.

So that's a start. But it's too late and I'm too tired to attempt a transcription tonight.

Great song, though.

Thanks Joe. A transcription some time would be a GREAT help.
I have the song on YT - I just don't understand the Dr with his accent and dialect.

It's an intriguing song, so I got out my headphones and a glass of whiskey. Here's what I came up with in 45 minutes. It's hopeless, but maybe some nice person like Jim Dixon will make sense of it.

I Thought I Heard New Orleans Say
(Mac Rebennack & Doc Pomus)

I was in my brougham (?) dreaming
Of the lower night Lower Ninth buckaroos
Fat man Antoine Domino
Singin' rock 'n' roll and blues

Red beans, pinball machines
Chicory coffee and hoodoo queens
File gumbo and pralines
Everything's hot down in New Orleans

I thought I heard New Orleans say
They is a street parade
Down on Esplanade
If it rains we'll feel no pain
Cause we gonna march today. (3x)

Professor Longhair now
An he world renowned
'bout Rampart Street
He got a high-class sympathy orchestra
Oh, you know they can't be beat

Watch out around Shakespeare Park
You don't know what's cookin' in the ovens in the dark
Look out refute (?) is stay away
Startin from them breakdown today (?)

I thought I heard New Orleans say
They is a street parade
Down on Esplanade
If it rains we'll feel no pain
We gonna shoo-be-doo-be-doo-dah-day. (3x)

French (??)
Susiana's a Melotone.
Second line Flambeau's carryin' on
Big chief and the tribe done come and gone

Won't be no Mardi Gras down here
Police took it over this year
Mardi Gras won't stray too far
We have no Mardi strike and no funky Gras

I thought I heard New Orleans say
They is a street parade
Down on Esplanade
If it rains we'll feel no pain
Cause we gonna march today.
Shoo-be-doo-be-doo-dah-day (multiple times, then fade)

Apparently, this song is based on Buddy Bolden's Blues, by Jelly Roll Morton.

You're a champion Joe. Thanks. That'll do...I'll fill in the blanks with my own gibberish. I think it's based on Iko Iko....?
His autobiography is written the same way as his lyrics.
As a gesture of thanks a truckload of 1925 Laphroaig is on it's way to Mudcat HQ.

Hi, Ian -
This being a virtual community, I suppose that's virtual Laphroaig we'll be drinking...

Cheers!

Unfortunately I've drunk it all.
Being 'virtual' there was no alcohol content.
Wasn't quite the same.

Joe: I think line 2 is:

"Of the Lower Ninth buckaroos"

– referring to the Lower Ninth Ward.

You're right Jim and I also think it's "Fat man with fine diamonds" in a reference to Fats Domino. This is like deciphering the Egyptian tombs!

Oooh, ooh, where's the diamonds?

In the first verse, I hear quite clearly: Fat man Antoine Domino

I don't hear a second fat man.

You're right Joe, it IS 'fat man Antione Domino'. It's the way he sings "Do-ME-no" made me hear 'diamonds'. What other mysteries will be revealed. Mr Rebennack should have gone to elocution class but then we wouldn't have had his delightful vocal stylings.
Here's a thought: Dr John and Van Morrison in conversation. They're both indecipheral. To my antipodean ears anyway.

I've just realised I've invented a new word, "indecipheral", which is also indecipherable.
