Hello all!

Anybody have the lyrics to this song? From what I've heard Jim Reid would sing it before The Wild Geese

Thanks!
Paul

While you wait for the lyrics, here's the youtube recording of both songs. Lovely! Jim Reid- The Greylag Geese, The Wild Geese (Norland Wind)

The lyrics are in Jim Reid's songbook, available through Greentrax:
Jim Reid - The Better O' A Sang (Songs, Tunes and Life Stories)

Looks like an excellent value- I plan to buy a copy.

You're welcome- and thank you for asking about it. I'd never heard the song before.

In the YouTube video above, "The Greylag Geese" is used as an introduction to "The Wild Geese (Norland Wind)," a better-known song that has been posted in one of the threads crosslinked above.

Anybody have time to transcribe "Greylag Geese"?

Joe, I've transcribed most of it, but am waiting for his songbook to arrive to be sure I've written it out correctly.

Here you go- Do get the songbook, it's wonderfully rich in song and story.

THE GREYLAG GEESE by JIM REID
Words and music written by Jim Reid as found in his songbook, "The Better o' a Sang', Scottish Arts Council, 2004

The summertime is bonny, an' maist fowk say they like it best o' a'.
But o' there's ae thing missin', the graylag geese have a' flown far awa'.

When autumn comes aince mair, the wind blaws cauld an' nichts are growin' black
There's ae thing sent tae cheer me, the soond that says again the greylag's back.

When winter clouds blaw ower and fowk wi' heids doon collars turned up high
My een they aye stray upward, lookin' for yon lang skein in the sky.

And then when days grow langer the springtime urge is tae be movin on
But roots can haud ye stranger an' then ye realize the geese are gone.

I envy a' thae wild geese that can jist fly tae countries ower the sea
Tae Norway, Iceland, Greenland they ken the way o' livin' wild and free
