Time And Tune (BBC Schools) - Contents

Okay.
We've had a good response on the contents of the BBC radio for schools thread on Singing Together
I thought it may be time to extend it by listing the contents of the "Time and Tune" booklets. The period for which they are published matches or overlaps the publication of Singing Together, so presumably they are intended for a slightly different audience (age group)
As with Singing Together, my collection is only partial, and I'm still working on it.
The listings below are deliberately kept short to allow for inclusion of the contents of any I don't have.

The occasional one or two songs I am happy to transcribe if needed, or to send a scan (much more up to date)
If anyone does request a scan (and understands ABC) a suitable quid pro quo might be for them then to transcribe it . . .

In the lists I have only included that part of the contents which could be considered 'songs' (okay, open for discussion). I have ignored the sections just teaching rhythm or scales, also any lyrics with no attached tune (or tune with no attached lyrics)

The list of songs is faithfully reproduced, and there are many songs repeated in different books (listed each time) in fact, Autumn '67 repeats the contents of Autumn '64 (even the cover pictures are the same)
Some songs come under more than one title ("The courtship" / "The deaf woman's courtship") and in some cases, the words vary between two versions from the same publisher!

With those caveats here goes.

This description was found on a website for BBC broadcasts: Here and I thought it worth adding here. Apart from giving the rationale & ages for the various programmes it also comments on the appearance in later years of themed books (highlighted in bold by me)

A music series offering children opportunities to listen to music and sing along, with creative suggestions and games to develop music appreciation and skills.

Each school term Time and Tune covered 7 or 8 different songs, built up verse by verse and used as a basis to investigate ways of singing, musical notation and other topics. During the 1960s each term's songs began to be themed around a common subject, and from the early 1970s each term began to consist of a complete cantata or musical story, which children could perform as an end-of-term show once the broadcasts had finished.

Episodes of Time and Tune have a presenter, joined by a children's choir and sometimes professional singers. The presenter talked directly to listening children but encouraged them to interact with the classroom teacher, during and after the broadcasts.

Programmes are accompanied by lavishly illustrated pupils' pamphlets, containing the tunes and words of all the songs, simple exercises and features about musical instruments or related topics. The pamphlets would be referred to during the broadcasts and were essential for successful use of the series. At least three pamphlets have been issued every school year for the past sixty years, and these pamphlets form the basis for the episode guide below.

The series is part of a BBC music course for primary schools, which extends from Music Box for infants, The Song Tree for 5-7 year olds (added in spring 1982), Time and Tune for 7-9 year olds, and Rhythm and Melody (until summer 1964) or Music Workshop (from autumn 1964) for 9-11 year olds. Pupils can graduate from one series to another, learning increasingly advanced topics. Two earlier BBC school radio music series called Time and Tune for Juniors and Time and Tune for Seniors ran in Scotland during the 1930s, but they were not directly related to this series.

Seems they recycled quite a few of the songs over the years. I presume 'Marienne's Song' and 'Marianna's' are one and the same.

I also remember singing 'Sourwood Mountain' and enjoying the 'Hey Diidy Ump' chorus. Checking my copy of Cecil Sharp's Appalachian song book it looks like it's right out of there, with a few alternative verses substituted.

Yep. I haven't checked them word for word, but checked the first lines when I was listing the titles & they appear to be the same song (possibly from two sources)

Cheers

Looking for some info on Time and Tune I tried the link above (2nd post). It's now a 404 page not found.
I'm so glad I copy/pasted the contents of that page here before it disappeared. I've also got a copy of the page showing most of the covers somewhere.

This is a fantastic piece of work! Many memories stirred. I'm hoping to use these (the 70s period) in a future piece of research work on notation. I can't see all of the pieces I remember - perhaps they were from different shows. I remember Robin Ddu most clearly of all; but also I remember us singing some other songs with BBC radio support and, in some cases, graphic scores, that don't appear here - 'Never Weather Beaten Sail' being a case in point, but also, 'Kalinka' and 'Goodbye Old Paint' (in the 70s) and a song about a wagon train where the lyrics talk about them "ridin' into the dawn" despite them "headin' west". Any ideas what I'm remembering here?

Kalinka was in Singing Together (Spring '75)
Goodbye Old Paint In Mudcat
Never Weather Beaten Sail Also in Mudcat

If a scan of Kalinka is needed, let me know. I can email it, or with a little more time, post it here.

If it is a case of working on the notation specifically from the BBC broadcasts for schools, "Goodbye Old Paint" was in "Music Time". Again, I can share a scan of the pages by email.

Nigel, thanks so much for your response. Yes, I've just rediscovered 'Music Time' - the 'Frog Went A-Courting' cover in particular. I shall keep an eye on ebay for pamphlets, and I'm not sure entirely yet that my research is going down this route (haven't started the course yet!), but I shall keep an eye on this thread and possibly get back in touch when I have a clearer picture. Once again, many thanks for your reply!

Apart from 'Music Time' the BBC also used Old Paint in their 'Music Arcade' broadcasts 'Rodeo'. Which is currently on eBay Here

To be honest, the seller 'nigel42folk' is me. All of these type magazines I tend to start at £3.00 with free p&p (within UK) because I'm not out to make a profit, just covering the cost of my collection.

This is a reminder to me, there seem to be BBC music for schools collections which I haven't listed the contents here yet.
Work to do ;)

That one would appear to be "Sleeping Beauty" BBC "Music Workshop" (which matches your 'Autumn 1985')
I don't have a copy of that one myself, but a picture of the cover can be seen on Amazon

Cheers
Nigel

While I have the thread open. I've had some requests from people trying to find particular illustrators of these pamphlets. While my interest is in the music, knowing how Google manages to find things here I thought I would place a list of the illustrators here (over possibly 3 postings as it's a long list).
Given time late I might go through and add them to the individual contents lists.

Thanks so much for printing this list!
I've found an old tape of myself singing some of these songs. I was 9 in May 1966! I had remembered Singing Together but had totally forgotten Time and Tune.
Thanks so much.??
