From: Leadfingers Jazz men have always been somewhat eclectic - I was sat in with a German Trad band in Moenchen Gladbach back in the day - Banoist said "You will know this one - its an English Folk Song" and we played a lovely slow stomp version of Brahms Cradle Song ! |

About 60 years ago, I browsed thru a German songbook with songs from all over the world. Not only were the words translated, but the tunes had been Germanized. "Oh, Susannah" became a waltz, and "Vive la Compangnie" a vigorous march. A curious thing about Brahms's Cradle Song is that in American it is universally known as "Brahms' Lullaby" and so everybody knows it is by Brahms. In Germany (so a German once told me) it is known (of course) as Wiegenlied, and almost nobody knows it is by Brahms! |

At one stage there's a few spoken words which at first I couldn't make out - seems to refer to "Daddy Grace", founder of the sect. Tine is definitely "Danny Boy"... Any of our American friends come across the genre before? Regards p.s. I agree about the tuba. Apart from all that, as I commented elsewhere, some of them look a little more s(h)aved than others! |

I had never heard of the United House of Prayer and its trombone groups before. That performance is what I would call "jazz standard." There's innovation and there are blue notes, but the entire thing is musical - no overblowing the helpless instrument, no gurgling of phlegm. Nice! |
