December Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing

The December Monthly Shanty, Forebitter, Foc's'l Ballad, and Annual Seasonal Song Session will be happening this Saturday, December 19th at The Press Room in Portsmouth, NH from 3:30 to 7:30 PM.

This annual sea and seasonal song session usually brings out a lot of material not sung the rest of the year. We'll definitely have to do Brian Chadburne's "Shopping Shanty" and, I'm sure, Charlie has a few seasonal songs about traditional Maine weather, etc. It's wide open for songs we only get a short opportunity to sing each year.

See you there!

Linn

Well, the pub was quiet when we started...took a bit to get a quorum and the bar was sparsely populated, too.

Then we got loud...;-)

Yes, we sang sea songs; yes, we sang seasonal songs... Oh, and yes, we got silly, too. Much fun and merriment was had.

Who was there? Well, I was, and Ranger1, Dianne, Gail F., Don, Jeri, Bill & Carol, Marty, Mike, Susan, and Lucas who is living on his boat also showed up about an hour before we closed the session. Listeners included Gail D. and her sister Janice.

We sang --

1. Streets of Laredo (parody) - Dianne (uh huh)
2. Deck Us Now With Boston Charlie (Pogo/Walt Kelly) - Linn
3. Joy To The World (feline version) - Linn
4. Nine Times a Night - Linn
5. Blow, Boys, Blow - Dianne
6. Bear Away, Yankee - Jeri
7. Home, Dearie, Home - Linn
8. Farewell To Carlingford - Don
9. Good Ship Calabar - Mike
10. Boozing - Dianne
11. Bottle of the Best - Linn
12. Drink to the Laddies (Sue West) - Susan
13. a story about her shiny sparkly black party dress - Dianne
14. Aunt Clara - Linn
15. Black Bird, Get Up - Jeri
16. Cornish Lads - Susan
17. Gloucestershire Wassail - Don
18. Monty Python Medlay - various
19. Seven Old Ladies Locked In the Lavatory - Jeri & Mike
20. Down Below - Linn (somehow, it seemed appropriate)
21. Hiram's Famous Homemade Beer - Mie
22. Garnet's Homemade Beer - Jeri
23. Rebels In the Hold (Star Wars parody by Susan & Dan) - Susan
24. Leaving of Liverpool - Gail F.
25. The King - Marty
26. The Wren - Linn
27. Maid of Amsterdam - Lucas (then Linn sang the "thatch" verse)
28. Christmas Is Coming, the Goose Is Getting Fat (round) - Don
29. While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks By Night - Dianne
(yes, Jeri started "While Shepherds Washed Their Socks By Night"...)
30. Wexford Carol - Susan
31. Christmas Eve At the Bridge (collected in Nova Scotia) - Mike
32. What Does The Deep Sea Say - Susan
33. Simple gifts/Lord of the Dance - Marty
34. Old Newfie Outhouse - Mike
35. Five Constipated Men In the Bible - Dianne
36. Noah Built the Ark - Susan
37. Turns Over In the Morning (Garrison Keillor's winter parody of Gordon Bok's "Turning Towards the Morning") - Marty
38. Three Ships - group effort (mostly Susan), requested by Gail F.
39. Little Piece of Wang - Linn
40. Donald, Where's Your Trousers? - Mike
41. Angus and the Kilt - Susan
42. Martin Said To His Men - Dianne (and a verse or two from Linn & Marty)
43. Lady Franklin's Lament - Don
44. Pleasant and Delightful - Lucas
45. Amelia, Where You Bound To? - Susan
46. Homeless Wassail (Ian Robb) - Marty
47. Leave Her, Johnny, Leave Her - Gail F.
48. Let No Man Steal Your Thyme - Dianne
49. Rolling Mills of New Jersey - Marty
50. Nelson's Prayer/Seaman's Hymn - Don and the Company

Okay. I was attentive, but negligent. I know I've forgotten at least one song. Gail F. sang "Rose of Allendale" at some point and I didn't get it written down. What else did I forget or get wrong? A bit too much levity, perhaps...;-)

First off, where did my message go?????

You are right about Gail singing the "Rose of Allendale" and it was early in the session. Since I don't take notes, I cannot tell you the exact spot.

Perhaps she was thinking of sending another "note", but lost the key after C#?

Another one I missed -- and it was ME singing it! Just as I was planning to sing it, Sue asked me to fit in "Maggie May", so I did.

We want this record to be complete, fear-pete's-sake.
