I note that on the title of this thread, the Great War is referred to as WW1. Is that the standard way to refer to it in Europe?
Here in the States, it's WWI (with a Roman numeral), and WWII.

In the UK at least it is referred to as either, and I think anybody, at least who was educated in the UK school system, would know that The Great War refers to WWI. I expect that the phrase came into common usage before WWII happened.

As Dave says - and I've used both WW2 and WWII to describe the 1939-45 conflict, though those of us of a certain age just refer to it as "the war"! (As in, "I remember, just after the war...").

The British style is first world war and second world war. World war one or two is an American format

In GB it's 'first world war' ..Listen no further than the Oldham Tinkers wonderful 'Dads Medals'

I think thats right, the first world war is "the great war", and the second world war is just "the war".
