09 Jan 16 - 01:56 PM (#3764047) Subject: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess First Press Room Shanty Sing of 2016. The January Monthly Shanty, Forebitter, Foc's'l Ballad, and Annual Seasonal Song Session will be happening this Saturday, January 16th at The Press Room in Portsmouth, NH from 3:30 to 7:30 PM. Hope the weather holds -- Accuweather long term forecast says partial sunshine, so my guess is that's better than cloudy. Plenty of winter sea songs to sing. See you there! Linn |
09 Jan 16 - 09:29 PM (#3764143) Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: ranger1 My plan is to be there, day off already secured. My niece, her husband, and my great-nephew may be meeting me there. I want to see how the little guy likes shanties. |

14 Jan 16 - 09:25 AM (#3765466) Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: GUEST,Guest-Dianne Ah well, since I didn't win the jackpot I won't be out celebrating that! A good session at the Press Room will help me forget about it. Dianne |
15 Jan 16 - 10:37 AM (#3765752) Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Today is the 97th anniversary of the Great Boston Molasses Flood back in 1919. Twenty-one people died and until recently, when most of that area of the North End was paved over, on hot summer days you could still smell molasses. Schooner Fare wrote a great song about it -- maybe we can sing it tomorrow. Linn |
16 Jan 16 - 10:41 AM (#3765960) Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Hope the "ing" out there doesn't turn to rain. Sigh. It's January. It'll be warm and dry at The Press Room -- see you there. Linn |
16 Jan 16 - 11:16 AM (#3765967) Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: ranger1 I think I'm out. Unless Charlie decides to drive down. Sigh. |
16 Jan 16 - 12:27 PM (#3765985) Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess I'm going out now to clear the snow off the car. The snow has turned to rain in Portsmouth and will probably do the same here at some point. I've emailed Don and advised him to stay safe at home. I'll be heading to Portsmouth in about an hour and a half, but I'm sure it will be a slow drive. Be safe, everyone. Linn |
16 Jan 16 - 12:56 PM (#3765999) Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: GUEST,Don Hale Shurly you Jest! We're going by way of Pete & Laurette's house and will re-evaluate then. The weather radar is showing rapid clearing, moving North & East. Charley might have some issues, though. Don |

16 Jan 16 - 08:49 PM (#3766106) Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Driving was sloppy but not bad west of Rte 125, and east to Portsmouth the road was wet but clear. Not particularly slippery. Portsmouth streets and sidewalks (nearly went tits up between the car and The Press Room) left a lot to be desired. Had a decent turnout considering. Eleven of us, I think, though not all at the same time. More of us singing than in the rest of the pub. Driving home was not slippery at all, but most of the way was in fog. Slipperiness was more in anticipation than in actuality. The cats are fed and I've settled in with a book. It's been a long day. I'll post the session tomorrow. Linn |
17 Jan 16 - 09:43 AM (#3766252) Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Charley Noble Linn- Glad that some folks had a chance to get together. The weather and driving just seemed to stressful for me this time around. Hopefully, February will be better. Charlie Ipcar |
17 Jan 16 - 01:10 PM (#3766330) Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Not a bad turnout, considering the iffy weather. The sun actually tried to come out on my drive to Portsmouth -- blue sky peeking through the clouds. I got there very early and had a cup of chili while listening to jazz. Nicole was the first of the crew to arrive and then Gail and Jim with Emily in tow. The rest of the crew was Mike, Don and Cathy who made it up from southeastern Massachusetts, Marty from west of Boston, Justine, Dianne, Carol, and Tyler (I told her she was late -- she came in with about an hour left to the session). Not much in the way of listeners, although a couple of the lads at the bar applauded a few songs. It was a quiet Saturday afternoon at The Press Room, so we had to liven it up. And we sang -- 1. Shake Her, Johnny, Shake Her - Linn 2. Oh, Molasses - Linn (I "bruced" it) 3. Home From the Sea - Gail 4. Tied Up And Let Her Rot (a Mary Garvey song) - Nicole 5. Boys of Fairhill - Jim 6. Leaving of Liverpool - Mike 7. St. Brendan's Fair Isle - Nicole 8. Greenland Whale Fisheries - Don 9. Help Me To Raise 'Em - Justine 10. The Lobster - Linn (there was a reason I sang this, but I can't remember what it was) 11. The Old She-Crab - Mike 12. Sweet Thames, Flow Softly - Marty 13. Lowlands - Gail 14. Knickerbocker Line - Linn 15. South Australia - Jim 16. Davy Louston - Justine 17. Winter Shanty - Dianne 18. With Me Rubber Boots On - Mike 19. To Portsmouth Round - Justine 20. Black Socks Round - Marty 21. Bottle of the Best - Linn 22. Santiano - Carol 23. Sam's Gone Away - Dianne 24. Sloop John A (Les Barker) - Linn (Again, we were discussing that some sad sea songs sound happy and some happy sea songs sound sad, as well as sad songs sounding sad and happy songs sounding happy. I explained that this is a song of abject disappointment. ) 25. Botany Bay - Mike 26. Grey Funnel Line - Don 27. Heave Ya Ho - Marty 28. Drink To All the Lassies - Nicole (who will correct the title if I'm wrong, I hope) 29. Dundee Weaver - Linn (another song containing good advice) 30. The Wooden Leg Parson - Mike 31. The Sailor's Farewell - Gail Then, as she, Jim, and Emily were leaving for her birthday celebration, we, of course, had to sing a few birthday songs -- to Halleluyah Chorus and "Why Were You Born So Beautiful". 32. Thyme It Is a Precious Thing -- Dianne (using her "girl" voice) 33. Chopped Off the Head of Her - Mike (who has promised to find the actual title) 34. Mrs. McGrath - Justine 35. Garner's Gay - Marty 36. Sailor's Prayer (Tom Lewis) - Linn 37. Cairo-Town - Don 38. My Johnny Was a Shoemaker - Tyler 39. William Bloat - Nicole 40. Mickey's Warning - Linn 41. The Gas Man - Dianne 42. Banks of Sicily - Tyler 43. Joke and Push About the Pitcher - Marty 44. Shenandoah - Don 45. Home, Dearie, Home - Linn 46. Fisher Row - Tyler 47. Sea Coal - Marty & Tyler 48. Seaman's Hymn - Don and the Company That's it, I think. Please let me know if there are any additions or corrections. Linn |

20 Jan 16 - 08:25 AM (#3766913) Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess I caught myself several times forgetting to write down what I was singing. Did I sing "Flash Company" in response to a song that Dianne (or someone) sang that had a similar line about not building your nest in the top of a tree? I woke up this morning with a vague memory that I did... Linn |
20 Jan 16 - 06:20 PM (#3767035) Subject: RE: January Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Anybody read this? Anybody remember for sure whether I sang it or not? I'm pretty sure I didn't sing it at Friday night's session and it DID fit in with something sung Saturday. I either sang it or wanted to sing it. Sometimes I'm a lousy scribe... Linn |
