HELLO MUDDAH, HELLO FADDAH (A LETTER FROM CAMP)
Words by Allan Sherman and Lou Busch; tune, Amilcare Ponchielli's “Dance of the Hours”
As recorded by Allan Sherman, 1963.

Hello, Muddah; hello, Fadduh.
Here I am at Camp Granada,
Camp is very entertaining,
And they say we'll have some fun if it stops raining.

I went hiking with Joe Spivy.
He developed poison ivy.
You remember Leonard Skinner?
He got ptomaine pois'ning last night after dinner.

All the couns'lors hate the waiters,
And the lake has alligators,
And the head coach wants no sissies,
So he reads to us from something called "Ulysses."

Now I don't want this should scare ya,
But my bunkmate has malaria.
You remember Jeffrey Hardy?
They're about to organize a searching party.

Take me home, oh Muddah, Fadduh,
Take me home; I hate Granada.
Don't leave me out in the forest where
I might get eaten by a bear.
Take me home; I promise I will not make noise,
Or mess the house with other boys.
Oh please dont make me stay.
I've been here one whole day.

Dearest Fadduh, darling Muddah,
How's my precious little bruddah?
Let me come home if you miss me.
I will even let Aunt Bertha hug and kiss me.

Wait a minute; it's stopped hailing.
Guys are swimming; guys are sailing.
Playing baseball, gee that's bettah!
Muddah, Fadduh, kindly disregard this lettah!

The late and GREAT Allen Sherman......I no longer remember all the words, but his book, "The Rape of the A.P.E." is a MUST read. Simply hilarious.

lessee one line was

"Camp is fun, everyone keeps saying,
But I don't know how they know
'Cause it keeps raining.

Somebody correct me if I got anything wrong. I know a lot more Alan Sherman songs, too, but I won't inflict them on you unless somebody begs.

Wildlone has the right version. My memory fizzled a bit as I was rushing out to referee a youth soccer game. Except that it's "Dearest Faddah, darling Muddah," to rhyme with bruddah, of course. Anybody remember "My Son, the Folk Singer"? Try springing one of those gems on your song circle some time.

This May you had a rotten month
So what is there to say?
Let's hope next May is better

I have a treasured copy of "My Son The Folk Singer." My favouritwe is "The Ballad of Harry Lewis."

Wasn't there another sequel to "Camp Grenada" that was from the mother, saying "Don't come home, we've rented out your room" etc? Done by somebody other than Sherman?

"Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah" was included on Alan Sherman's album "My Son the Nut". It's essentially the first LP I ever owned, so I listened to it until, at one time, I had the entire album memorized. I've forgotten some of it over the decades, but in the past I have been known to sing "Here's to the Crabgrass" (to the tune of "In an English Country Garden"), "Headaches" (parody of "Heartaches"), "You Went the Wrong Way, Old King Louie", and other gems at open sings and such.

Howdy! I also remember the Camp Granada songs, and I'm positive he came out with another Camp Granada Song of different lyrics to the ongoing saga of the son. I remember because I really liked lyrics of C. G. 1 and then of 2. I remember listening to them on the radio in Colorado. The first one was such a hit, and them the 2nd one came out but try as I can I can't find the lyrics to the 2nd. Any one remember the 2nd C>G> lyrics?

Right you are, Donna! See this wonderful Allan Sherman Discography. (If you follow the links, you can find lyrics to most of his songs.)

The discography lists HELLO MUDDUH, HELLO FADDUH (NEW 1964 VERSION) in addition to the 1963 original HELLO MUDDUH, HELLO FADDUH (A LETTER FROM CAMP). The two songs were issued together as a single (Warner Brothers 5449, 1964). The album "Best of Allan Sherman" (Rhino RNLP/RNC 005, 1979 - reissued on cassette as R4 70005) also includes both versions. However, that site doesn't give lyrics of the 1964 version.

There is also a very short song called HELLO MUDDAH - NEVADA STYLE which appears on the album "Allan Sherman - Live!!! (Hoping You Are The Same)" which was recorded in Las Vegas:

Hello mudduh, hello fadduh.
Here I am with John Ascuaga.
I just work here, he's the boss here.
I'm already operating at a loss here.

All the dealers are nice chaps here,
But the dice are full of craps here.
They're got style here, they've got class here,
And if you're not careful you can lose your chips here.

I should have added: The 1994 CD version of Rhino's "The Best of Allan Sherman" (a.k.a. "My Son the Greatest") has a different track list than the 1988 LP, and it omits HELLO MUDDAH, HELLO FADDAH! (NEW 1964 VERSION). It's a shame. I'd love to see the lyrics, but there don't seem to be any lyrics or sound samples of this song anywhere on the Internet.

The new 1964 version, recorded live on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show on 27 May 1964...

G R A N A D A! Camp Granada, bleeeck!

Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh. I am back at Camp Granada.
And I'm writing you this letter just to say my compound fracture's getting better.
No one here knows where my trunk is and my bunk is where the skunk is.
And this year the food's improving 'cause the little black things in it are not moving.

Our camp nurse is quite a swimmer. She says swimming makes you slimmer.
Her name's Mrs. Pellegrini. Have you ever seen a whale in a bikini?
All our bathrooms have such thin doors. Gee, I wish they'd move them indoors.
We're all tired of Mother Goose here. So next Friday night they're having Lenny Bruce here.

Let me stay, oh Muddah, Fadduh. Let me stay, I love Granada.
Every night the camp fire's really keen. Oh mom, please send some Unguentine.
Let me stay, out here in mother nature's land and tiptoe through the tulips grand.
To leave would be a shame. Besides, I'd miss the poker game.

Please don't worry, Fadduh, Muddah. I'll take care of little brother.
He plays ball here and he rows here and I hope they teach him how to blow his nose here.
He wakes up at half past six and goes directly to the quick sand.
He was lonely, now he's better. He's like all of us except his bed is wetter.

Was the Allan Sherman live CD recorded in Reno? I would assume so because he mentions John Ascuaga of John Ascuaga's Nugget fame. The Nugget is the largest hotel in Sparks and was booming in the 60's (albeit with no hotel - it was opened in '84 or '85 - I was 2 then!.) The fact that he mentions Bonanza Airlines also leads me to believe Reno.

I've listened to it on Spotify, and the lyrics agree quite closely with those posted by GUEST,Kelly above.

  • #C1760I is "Camp Granada" by Allan Sherman.
  • #H3738E is "Return to Camp Granada" by Allan Sherman

It's ironic that the "whale in a bikini" in the song is named Mrs. Pellegrini. That was 1964.
Today, there's a swimmer, Federica Pellegrini (born 5 August 1988), who's a world record holder, and nobody's whale!
She's really quite lovely to look at.
I don't expect there's any connection, but, as I said, it's an ironic coincidence.
