In 1959-60 in Portland OR I met a guy who was an MA candidate in English Lit at Tulane (at least that was the story he was giving out). He was in Portland as an itinerant folksinger. He had a little book of his songs (black construction paper cover, stapled, 4x6 in.) that said it was published by Little Sandy Review. Songs included "I'm a boomer, and I've rode the rods, and I've talked with God...", Moby Dick (I think he was working on a thesis), "Just Another World War", and a song about why he didn't like unions. That's all I can remember. Anyone know anything?

There's significant mention of the Little Sandy Review folk music magazine in this thread (click). One of the editors was Jon Pankake, later to be editor of the Prairie Home Companion Folk Songbook.

Thanks, Joe. Do you know if there exists somewhere an archive of LSR publications? (The only Joe Pancake that comes up on google is a ballplayer in Detroit, even if I link it with PHC.)

We had a thread on Jon Pankake (note spelling) back in 2003:and we didn't locate him then. I believe he and his wife were on the faculty of the University of Minnesota, but their Websites at the university were dead even back in 2003.
In 2010, Jon and Marcia Pankake donated the Little Sandy Review Collection to the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Information about the collection is here: http://special.lib.umn.edu/findaid/xml/mss098.xml

Methinks the book/fellow your looking for is "The Little Black Songbook" by Ron McElderry. See here.

No idea what's become of him but you might want to try Juli Crockett at the Evangenitals band page here. (she added some work to "Moby Dick" and released it as a track on one of their albums.)

Ah, Phil, you have aroused my covetousness. Looks like the Little Black Songbook is only 26 pages long, and it's at the library at the University of California at Davis. I may need to take a trip.
