Calling All Smart Arses

Sorry about the attention grabber
Just thought I ought to let you know that the Prof has set up a "Help Wanted" page for not only songs/tunes he has been asked for but doesn't have, but also for musicians.
If you fancy a challenge in helping out or indeed need help yourself, then here's where to go Clicky bit and then choose the "Help Wanted" on the Navi Bar..
And can I be the first to say.. Merry Christmas
Mick

Though I'm celebrating Channuka, which involves lots of eating and gift opeing..........
I must admit, in my heart I relate much more to rejoicing in the birth of a child, the joy of good cheer and wishing all my fellow friends heath & happiness.

At this time of year I have an overwhelming feeling of deep gratitude and love for everyone.

Does anyone know the words to My Little Dreidel?> Maybe I'll perform in a klesmer band. That should be interesting.

The Dreidel Song

I have a little dreidel,
I made it out of clay,
And when it's dry and ready,
Then dreidel I will play.

Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel,
I made it out of clay,
And when it's dry and ready,
Now dreidel I shall play.

Aines, thank you very, very much! I'm hoping the chord progression isn't too challenging.

Helen darling, what would you like to be enlightened about?
Little dreidel?
It is a spin top kind of toy with hebrew letters on it. You spin it around to see what letter it falls on and the game goes from there. Usually it is played with pennies, which you collect if it lands on the right hebrew letter.

If you want any other type of enlightenment, I am afraid I'd be of little use and suggest you read from His Holiness The Dalai Lama.

I do know that this particular thread has managed to "solve" a lot of the Prof's outstanding queries .. thanks to Mary, Brakn, and .. drat can't remember the handle.. Callieach (apologies if I got that wrong).

Dear Prof,

'Cailleach' is none other than our own dear Philippa! And if you 'don't know much' about website design, you sure do 'fake it' very well!!

Dearest BB,

Is your email on bbc's resource page? If it is, I'll send you a really neat Chanukah e-card I found with the Dreidel song and an interactive dreidel game! And have you heard of the metallica klesmer band out of New York City? I heard a little bit of a recording of theirs yesterday on the radio and it's really cool! All they need is you, an electric banjo, and you know it'll be Carnegie Hall in no time!!

And Emily I'm so sorry I forgot to mention your contribution re "My Ain Country", but you've already had thanks from me and Bill. I got the impression he was right pleased to get the lyrics.. it gives one a right buzz to be able to help someone out in that way..

Do I take it you're not a big Monty Python fan Áine?
And there was I "singing" the Lumberjack Song to a dear friend only the other day. An impromptu performance brought on by the sacrifice of yet another pine tree to the current festivities.. what can I say.. BUY PLASTIC.. let's use up all the oil reserves.
Then we can get back to real horse power..
Now I'm going to lie down in a darkened room

I lie, dear Prof, I actually did watch 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' the other night when my oldest son was home from university. He wanted to expose (?) his little brothers and sister (10, 8 and 5, respectively) to what he considers the quintessential British humour troop of the 20th century. Well, siblings and parents alike totally the enjoyed experience -- 'HELP, HELP, I'M BEING REPRESSED!!'

I'm sure my boy-o could sing you under the table with his rendition of the Lumberjack Song -- 'AND I THOUGHT YOU WERE SO BUTCH!' But, there you go, he's doing standup comedy (as well as flipping burgers at MacDonalds) to help us put himself through university.

Can't tell I'm one proud Mama of a Gen-X Smart Arse, can ya?

Peace, Áine

"Bod" is also the Irish slang word, depending on the dialect, for that appendage between the legs of your average male.

So "bodly going" could be defined as ..... well yes!

God Jul alle sammen (Norwegian: Happy Christmas everybody)
And may you bodly go where no bod has gone before.

Breandán.

All the best to you for the Holidays and always,

Dearest Prof,

Here are some definitions that I hope you will commit to memory:

Baby Boomers (or 'Boomers') - Those folks born between 1943 and 1960.

Gen-X (or 'Generation X') - The folks born between 1960 and 1980.

These are the terms which are so popular in the American press to describe two generations of their countrymen and women. No, I don't think you are old-fashioned at all. I think you have been quite adept at staying out of the way of obnoxious euphemisms -- well, until you started hanging out around this place ;-)

Happy holidays to you and yours, Áine

Why Big Mick, you're almost making me blush with your flattery. I'm glad you like the website, a lot of time and effort goes into it.. far too much time actualy. I'm not sure why you'd want to search out threads I've posted here on the cat.. I don't think I've contributed much if at all.. especially compared to.. (I won't list names otherwise I'd be here all night).. I always seem to be asking rather than giving..
Áine I won't ask why you otherpondsiders use the term Generation-X to describe sprogs born between 60-80, unless of course the press believe they have come from outer space, judging by the "latest trends in music" I might be tempted to agree
I'm off now to check out your site as I'm hoping you have the lyrics I'm looking for

Dear Mick,

I do have the lyrics to 'Sliabh na mBan' (Mountain of the Women'), but their in Irish and the song you're looking for is in English, betcha, to a different tune. We've a thread on this here with the words in English and some great historical information. Thanks for reminding me to post the words in Irish on my music site, though. It's about time for some more additions.

Mick, my dear, I know how slow your dinosaur of a computer is...otherwise I know you would have searched the Threads. Slievenamon and the Irish spelling have been popular threads...

Next I need to check your link to the thread, Aíne, to see what I've missed.

And I HATE the term Gen-X....I was born in 1966 (OH NO! the truth is out!) and I just don't consider myself part of that "group"....Now, the music is one thing, but the pants 10 sizes too big teetering on the very edge of ones hips and back side so the boxer shorts you have on underneath can be seen is definitely NOT my style...

Frankly, I think I am more old fashioned than you Mick! I was singing Andrews' sisters songs and doing ballroom dancing while my friends were big into Chicago, Santana, Asia and whatever other groups were popular in the 80's...My biggest thrill after I started work after college was winning tickets to see Perry Como!

Oh well. Then there were the "yuppies" and darn, what was the other term? Upwardly mobile...etc

I better quit while I'm still afloat.

Mary

Well my most popular &angel&, you certainly opened a few memory lane threads with that.. I remember one particular lunch time in college when they held a "sounds in" which was taken up almost exclusively by the LP verison of &I'm a Man" by Chicago.. lasted about 20 minutes with a brilliant drum solo.. then they went &pop& and lost all cred..
And Santana.. I'd forgotten about them.. the biggest nostrils in the music industry.. what was the name of the album I had.. &Abraxas&???.. did a wicked cover of Pete Green's. "Black Magic Woman"..
And there's a story to pull at the heart strings.. i.e. Pete Green, probably one of the finest Blues guitarists that Britain has produced who went loopy and is now a regular bum.. it could happen to all of us.
But to get back to the pint in question.. can you help the Prof in helping others?
Check out the site.. HERE and then click on the Help Wanted page
Now I'm gone.. gonna listen to some early 70's stuff.. thanks Mary

As of Monday evening (Pacific coast USA) here are the songs Prof needs help in finding to make visitors to his site happy...

Blaze Away
Come Down the Stairs Pretty Peggy McClaine
(My?) Mary Ellen
Na Hu O Ho
Night O'Rafferty's Pig Ran Away
Sweet Offaly Lady
Sliabh na Monh
(Not the "usual" one.. "alone, all alone on the wave washed strand" etc.. but the one that starts "I hear no voices") --though I think Aíne has taken care of this last song via other threads..

And so you don't have to scroll to the top of this thread for the link if you wish to assist the Prof with any of these, here's the Clicky thing.

Thanks Mary
Having just re-read my last thread, I notice one major dose of typos and sticky keyboard..
It's perhaps best just to ignore it completely.. apart from the Peter Green bit, which is still a great pity..
I'm suspecting that the majority of people who currently frequent the mudcat are too young to remember Fleetwood Mac prior to them becoming a "pop" group.. or indeed when Christine McVie.. nee Perfect , sang with Chicken Shack.. the good old days.. I remember seeing both at Cleo's in Derby .. price of admission about 2 quid.. those were the days..
And by the way, the "help" seems to have dried up as of late.. this is your chance to be immortalised on the Prof's Pages..
