Does anybody know of a copy available in any shape or form (a recording would be worth dying for, but I'd be happy just with the notes) Fairly sure that if it can't be found here on Mudcat, I may as well stop looking. (with occasional concertina accompaniment by Alf Edwards)I think I have means to make MP3s from it, but have not messed with the gadgets recently. I can scan the back... where all the notes are... fairly easily. Let's see if anyone else has it already done. |

Pity it's not downloadable anywhere - would be happy to do that - maybe a swap!! I really find vinyl a bit of a pain, which is why I'm digitising everything. Thanks |

They followed me to a concert venue, and graciously signed several albums. I'll scan both albums and investigate the MP3 software. |

Ewan & Peggy were staying at Helen Scheyner's house and I was a fairly new member of FSGW who had made friends with Helen. Somehow, she heard that I had a car and knew where to go. I went over to her place in Maryland a couple hours before the concert, and led them downtown and watched them get ready & do sound checks. I had brought several albums...just in case... and they not only signed those, but quizzed me about others of theirs they thought I should have. I had to admit my collection thus far was acquired in Kansas... from cut-out bins. (since remedied) Now... there is an archive of FSGW newsletters, and I am looking to see the exact date, but that may take awhile. (It was somewhere in a 2 year span between Fall 1978 and Fall 1980, I'd think) I did find http://fsgw.org/archive/Newsletters/FSGW-NL-v06/FSGW-NL-v06n11.pdf this one, which says they had been here in May 1970, which was 7 years before I moved here.... so they did have some connections... probably thru Peggy... to deal with bureaucracy. |

Truthfully, it's not my favorite MacColl album (there are a couple of wonky concertina accompaniments and a few songs that just don't interest me much), but there's still some fine singing. |

Not used to this programme, I use Dropbox - perhaps some kind person will assist me across the road. Perhaps I should explain why I am on the cadge. Pat and I were friends of and worked with Ewan and Peggy for over twenty years. Over that time we accumulated a great deal of material connected with their work and ideas - lectures, seminars, live recordings, interviews.... enough to describe it as a substantial archive. A couple of years ago we thought we might be able to get an accessible archive set up in the UK but, as we now live in the West of Ireland, we tried to get someone to help over the water - no takers - so we helped produce two hour-long radio programmes to coincide with Ewan's 100th for Irish radio instead - a great success. Last year we were in touch with Ewan's son, Neil, who is in the process of producing a 4-CD set of Ewan's singing - hopefully to be released this year. Neil is archiving everything on Ewan and we have agreed to pass on everything we have to him. This will include all the albums we have, which is nearly his entire output (minus the 78s and a couple of U.S. albums which are probably reproduced elsewhere) To make them accessible, I am archiving all the sound files along with the album notes and information in order to make them usable. Once this is done, I am happy to pass anything on to anybody interested - very much a part of how Ewan regarded knowledge and material, so feel free to ask- not as good as an archive, but there you go!! Some of our own collection of field recordings (Co. Clare singers) is accessible on the Clare County website (see Carroll- Mackenzie collection at Clare Co. Library ) - we've just received news that the County has applied for a grant to employ a singer-in-residence to teach singing, using our collection as a basis Later in the year, Limerick Uni will house our entire collection for the use of their World Music Department, which might mean they will set up a Travellers website - they have expressed a wish to do so. Lloyd and Ewan MacColl's The English and Scottish Popular Ballads, also on Riverside in 1956, have six to ten-page booklets fixed to the gatefold sleeves. |

I've been staggered by the amount of information carried by the Library of Congress recordings - beats the hell out of many of the UK productions, sadly. All of the Smithsonian/Folkways notes are available as free downloads from their site and the Balladeers site has a large number of scannable ones for now unavailable albums (Lightshot is a great programme for this) Jim Carroll |

One confession he made was that he couldn't bear to listen to his early recordings - "mainly too slow and ponderous". Have to say I'm very am much enjoying re-visiting them now. I have to say, I agree with Bronson's review of the Lloyd/MacColl English and Scottish ballads: "It is not, I think, an exaggeration to declare that this is the most important event in the field sing the publication of Sharp and Karpeles Southern Appalachian collection.... THe length of many of these versions as sung by MacColl and Lloyd is a new experience, and and as such it promotes reconsideration of ballad form by bringing into sharp focus questions hitherto unasked or but dimly perceived.
