Did you know that sand dunes make noises? I didn't know that.

Follow the link and hear the sound (close to the bottom of the page.)

That reminds me of the sounds a glacier makes. My first summer in Alaska I worked at a wilderness lodge. With lots of free time to roam, I often visited across the way from a glacier.

The glacier emitted a myriad of sounds, ranging from tiny shrieks and squeals to dark mutterings and the occasional booming roar. A glacier is in constant, if slow, movement causing it to sound absolutely alive.

Thanks for the info, Ebbie. I didn't know that, either.

Heard similar noises when the Mackenzie River was breaking up. Lots of mass and lots of squeaks, cracks and tinkles with an occasional roar. It's good not to be on the river ice when this happens.

The sand dune sound is new to me. Nice find.

No. Apparently, it's quite loud, and susurration is quiet.

It looks like fun to slide on the dunes, but I remember a child almost losing its life when s/he fell into an opening in the Indiana dunes and could have suffocated.

my husband just told me of a childhood memory of a sand dune on the beach at Lake Michigan that emitted a soft "ArrK!" when kicked.

I don,t think there is any such thing as silence, especially in nature.

I stood at dusk on the shore of a half empty water reservoir in Idaho watching silhouetted rafts of ducks and geese come sailing down to land on the water for the night where tall white pelicans were already resting. Except for an occasional honk there was complete silence but for the suss suss suss of the birds' wings overhead.

I was mesmerized and when I got home I went looking for the descriptive word. susurration- never was a sound more aptly named.
