Tune Add: a new old song for March 17th

Recently I bought an old book of Tin Pan Alley songs, and in it was a charming piece called 'When I'm Dreaming of Erin, I'm Dreaming of You.'

Here's the data;

Music composed by Leo Friedman
Published in 1912 by the Marvin Lee Co., Chicago

Lyrics (by George Somebody)are drivel, and I'm avoiding them, otherwise they'll stick in my brain.

Clearly in the public domain by now.

In the key of C with easy chords, except for the chromatic measures 17 and 19. Just let the melody players show off while you pluck your D string.

Not an Irish song, you say? I don't care, actually. It's a charming tune and will brighten somebody's day.

I'm sending the MIDI in for posting, and it should appear soon. I have added an overly-simple bass line to help with figuring out the chords.

It's at least as "Irish" as "Danny Boy".

I posted a link to the MIDI in leeneia's message, but had to upload the file under primitive conditions. Does it work?

The MIDI worked on Finale Notepad. Here's one version of lyrics I'm copying and pasting from online.

WHEN I DREAM OF OLD ERIN (I'm Dreaming Of You)
(Marvin Lee / Leo Friedman, 1912)

When the nightingale's singing its sweet melodies,
And the scent of the flowers perfumes the night breeze,
Then I dream of my old home far over the sea,
By the Lake of Kilarney,
Where I long to be.
And I see you, it seems, waiting there on the shore,
Where together we stray'd in the sweet days of yore,
I am thinking, tonight, of my Colleen so true:
When I dream of Old Erin, I'm dreaming of you.

I can see the old cottage, just o'er the hill there;
'Tis those fond recollections bring happiness rare.
Sure the lassie I love with a heart that is true,
She is waiting for someone,
While someone waits too.
And my love's growing stronger each day, more and more,
'Tis the same old love story that's told o'er and o'er,
So, -cush-la my Colleen, it seems that you knew,
When I dream of Old Erin, I'm dreaming of you.

When I dream of old Erin I'm dreaming of you,
With your sweet, roguish smile and your true eyes of blue;
For my love, like the Shamrock, each day stronger grew;
When I dream of Old Erin, I'm dreaming of you.

It doesn't play for me, Joe. When I click (either right or left), my computer tries to save it to My Documents. That would work for a person who owns MIDI software, but if not, then there's no hearing what the song sounds like.

I use Google Chrome and Windows 7.

Leenia, when you download it, find where it downloads to in the file folder and the right click it and chose Open With--> whatever you use, maybe I think Windows Media Player should come with that system and it just played for me on that too.

Is it this cylinder recording?

Apollo Quartet of Boston 1917

With words. Don't listen leenia.

Right, Freddie. (Bless you for reading the OP.)

As you've noticed, I like this melody but dislike the words, which I consider trite and insincere. Now the point of the link is to play the melody when clicked on. That way people can see right away if they like it. They can even learn it by ear right from this thread.

And if, like Cnd, they happen to own MIDI software such as Finale, they can download it and manipulate it as needed - change the key, write new parts, add chord notation, print it, etc.

I forgot to say... No, on my Android tablet I can't play the link.
I get a blank page and a pop-up "couldn't play the track you requested"
I forgot to try it on the PC at work.

(fwiw, on the tablet I can play midi and mp3 files from a Google drive file like https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0BzfIBI4ets96fnJZdDB6MWFzVGRPWXVZUDE2eVZKMV9VQS03SkJCaFlGd2hxenFvVHUybEU
Although when I click on a link it first of all says 'Oops....' I ignore that and click the download and it does play.)

Thanks for the info, Freddy.

I decided to investigate Google Drive but didn't find a clear explanation.

It's too bad that MIDI files no longer play on Mudcat threads. Another door to music-making has shut.

It could be related to Google's new decision to not support Java. Have you tried using another browser?

The problem lies in the device which is being used to upload the files. Perhaps the situation will improve in time.
