27 Feb 16 - 07:13 AM (#3775303) Subject: New dance & folk club Blackheath London From: Sarah the flute Morrigan will be hosting a monthly international song and dance ceilidh / folk club beginning in April - last Friday of the month at Mycenae House, near Blackheath, London. The events are being held in partnership with GFMA and the idea is to have a mix of cultures. Each month one band/artist/dance troupe will have a special extended slot. The rest of the evening will be a dance then performance slot on an alternating basis. The core band for the dances will be Morrigan and some guest musicians and amplified but anyone else who wishes to play along with the music (unamplified) will be very welcome. The idea is to provide an evening of entertainment for all. Artists can apply for floor spots either through the Morrigan email on the website or via info@globalfusionarts.co.uk There is a subsidised bar and food will also be on sale in the canteen next door. Lovely venue with a nice big wooden floor for dancing and good acoustics. April to July events are going to be a trial and if all goes well then this will become a regular club. Please tell your friends and spread the word. April 29th, (ceilidh special) May 27th,(Botswana musicians slot for Africa) June 24th, (Bards without borders band celebrating 400 anniversary Shakespeare and Refugee week) July 29th (Cheng Yu Chinese Pipa Player slot) If you can't wait that long come to the GFMA Good Friday Ceilidh at Charlton House on 25th March! Morrigan will top and tail the evening with a song and do the MC bit Can you make it down from Cheshire? The dances can be called by whoever wants to do one! Sarah |

It's nice to see a ceilidh club which IS a ceilidh club. A ceilidh used to be a dance with entertainment spots, but in recent years it has come to be just a dance - and English Ceilidh at that. The only other example of this type of club I know of was one we ran in Liverpool in the '70s. We had two resident bands, playing on alternate weeks (actually, it ran fortnightly), an MC and a resident caller. Tom Brown and I (The Wakes) were with one band, and also used to do song spots, and we had floor singers and the occasional 'floor caller'. The intention had been to book guests, which might be a guest band, guest singer/dance team or guest caller. It ran for a few months, but although it was ticking over, we never got enough money coming in to be able to book guests. Personally, I always thought it was a mistake to do it in Liverpool, but I wasn't actually running it. A lot can depend on where you are. As regards the running order, I think I'd be inclined to do three or four dances and then some entertainment, rather than alternate as you are planning, but maybe this is something that will sort itself out with experimentation and feedback from Mr and Mrs Punter. I'd also avoid having English Ceilidh every week. Some people prefer the more traditional type of band and dances. You might also have the occasional 'special' - Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Breton, Cajun, Quebecois, Balkan etc. Good luck. I'd like to see this type of club catching on. John Kelly. |

Actually there's another current example that also happens to be in South London, coincidentally: the monthly Folk of the Wood nights. In London it is the Scottish ceilidhs that are purely dance, and before anybody tries to call me a liar by mentioning Knees Up Cecil Sharp, they do not describe their events as "ceilidhs". |

I suppose it would depend on suitable venue, and whereabouts of other people who might be interested. I haven't spoken to anybody about it, but have asked people about srarting a trad folk club, and just got negative responses. One or two people have sugggested getting together and 'doing something', but then gone cold on the idea - twice! I always did seem to encounter that kind of reluctance around these parts. We alternate songs with tunes nights. The tunes sessions get around 20 - 25 and the song sessions 10 - 15. The clog sessions, alternative Saturdays get 15 - 20. We have no bar so encourage people to bring a picnic and their own drink - also works well |

As it's only once a month we hope people will save the date in their diaries and we are hoping to have a range of cultures in the dancing too. I guess the real difference is we will have a core band for the dancing with mics/DI but the idea is others can just jam along which hopefully means the evening will appeal to all - musicians, dancers and singers ...well that's the idea Sarah |
