resign yourself to a comfy death bed or spend a split second realising a stupid accident is your last moment alive ????

I just survived a really idiotic accident and it is the most exhilarating sensation of shock fear and thrill

When I was fifteen I was in the school's woodwork lab standing shoulder to shoulder with a friend and we were using a vertically mounted drill. I turned it on and a fraction of a second later discovered I had not removed the key that tightens the drill, when the aforementioned object sailed between our heads and made an impressive dent in the cupboard opposite.

Yes, shock, fear and thrill, I'd agree. Exhilarating? Not that time.

I'm still laughing now...

delayed shock reaction ???

it just involved falling backwards and grasping out desperately for something to hold onto to and pulling it all down on top

and the amazing thing is i didn't spill my drink

When I was a young soldier in a cavalry regiment we were cleaning weapons after being on the firing range with the tanks, [ as was all the squadron ] myself and my tank commander Brad Fletcher were sat on the turret of our tank, I was cleaning the co-axial .30 Browning machine gun and Brad was cleaning the commanders Browning, another tank a few yards away from us had his weapons pointed towards us when suddenly his co-axial machine gun fired off a single round, it passed between Brad and myself, an inch either way and one of us would have been dead, Brad went and hauled the gunner out of his tank and arrested him for reckless discharge of a weapon and failing to clear his weapons after firing, I just carried on with my cleaning.
The gunner in question got 56 days detention.

Drift -- Dontcha just love the fact that armoured regiments [tanx'n'such] of the British Army are still called 'cavalry' -- dragoons, hussars, lancers! Is ability to ride a horse still an essential to enlistment in any of these, as well as ability to handle an armoured vehicle?

Tank squadrons are [ or were ] still called ' sabre squadrons ' when I was in.

I was up in the loft and cut through a 240-volt mains cable. Definitely an 'oh f*ck' moment. It didn't half go dark.

Fortunately I was using wire cutters with plastic covered handles.

I near bit the dust about 8 times but there was only one where it was an "instant of imminent death". A near death car accident. Ya know when people say their whole life flashed before them in an instant... that's what happened. I wasn't at all thrilled in any way. All the others times, I just was pissed off that "this might be the end of it unless I can figure out a way to get out of it or get REALLY LUCKY".

Although, I did get quite a physical thrill when I was wakened by a float plane tipping over violently in the wind and seeing the right wing well immersed in freezing cold salt water in Nain Bay, Labrador nearly a km from the dock. It was damn nuisance to be wakened so rudely by the mistake of a 40 year veteran bush pilot who should have known not to fuck with a 40 knot wind.

Ah, the three-quarter lancers, last of the British Army's "fraction cavalry". (In the 1920s, lots of cavalry regiments were amalgamated, resulting in all sorts of number combinations which the wags in other arms "simplified" e.g. the 14th/20th Hussars were known (throughout my time at Hohne) as the "0.7 Hussars".

The 16th/5th Lancers were the only unit where the senior regiment on amalgamation had the higher regimental number, and were known as the "Vulgar Fraction".

No major threats to my life and limb during my brief time in the forces. On a grenade range, O/Cdt J**** R******** managed to throw a grenade backwards onto the roof of a shelter where I was cleaning three LMGs. We were perfectly unharmed although the disassembled guns were covered in bat droppings and so on. Definitely an "Oh, f***" moment for all concerned.

I recall two death defying situations in which my response was "This is serious" and the other was "why".

One was falling into Niagara Falls and the other was a drunk driver.

As Wilde didn't say: To meet a drunk driver, Mr Donuel, may be regarded as a misfortune; to fall into Niagara looks like carelessness.

Adam Faith died, age 62, of a massive heart attack in a hotel room with his 22 year old mistress.

His last words do not appear to be on record in the public domain ?
