kPlease everyone follow what is going on right now concerning child abuse in Australia and the Vatican. It is too complicated to explain right now but has to do with a song that a comic wrote, used it to crowdfund a group of survivors who traveled to rome to hear the probably distorted testimony of a bigwig in catholic church..and i am catholic..who was too ill to travel to australia to testify. read in connection with spotlight oscar last night. very profound and related happenings right now.

Tim Minchin's Come Home Cardinal Pell is a pitch-perfect protest song by Liam Viney, Piano Performance Fellow, The University of Queensland. This song was a large contributor to a crowdfunded appeal that paid for survivors & relatives to travel to Rome to hear Cardinal Pell's testimony (aim was $55,000, $170,000 was raised.) The Cardinal's doctors certified his bad health did not allow him to travel back to Australia to give his testimony.

Ridsdale abuse 'sad' but 'not of much interest to me', Pell says Cardinal George Pell is facing more questions over his handling of notorious paedophile priest Gerald Ridsdale at the child abuse royal commission in Rome. Follow live here live blog to Pell's evidence (Ridsdale was a priest who was moved around parishes in the 1970s)

transcript of evidence

Cardinal Pell says 'I have the full backing of the Pope'

When I first heard Tim Minchin's song about Cardinal Pell I laughed. Then I started crying. What's there to cry about? The victims of child sexual abuse and their harrowing testimony, the terrible injustice, and the sorrow at my loss of faith in the church (Kristina Keneally, former Premier of New South Wales)

Fallen Order Intrigue, Heresy, and Scandal in the Rome of Galileo and Caravaggio by Karen Leibreich.
Book review, 2004, "A sordid tale of pederast priests and blind-eye bishops: a headline fit for today, that is 350-odd years old. . . . Liebrich's account shows not only that priestly abuse is an old problem, but also that cover-ups never work — a pointed moral with obvious, and timely, implications." Kirkus Reviews

Why's this music-related thread below the fold?

excellent query - I'm currently creating a draft so I can post Liam Viney's article on a protest song thread from this list, but it might not be necessary.

And the Oscar for Best Picture goes to......"Spotlight"!

Not wishing to hijack the thread, but "Spotlight" is about the press investigation into uncovering sexual abuse within the Catholic Church in Boston. It seems appropriate that the award is given this week when Cardinal Pell and the Royal Commission are meeting in Rome, doesn't it?

To paraphrase an old rhyme:

I do not like thee, Reverend Pell,
The reason why I cannot tell,
But this I know - and know full well -
I do not like thee, Reverend Pell.

Have to say I found it odd that Spotlight - a kind of obscure film, I think? - got Hollywood's top award.

There's still another two days of interrogation for Pell. Hope it ends in hell for him with someone finding some evidence proving that he knew what was happening around him contrary to current denials!

But why are these questions being asked at a "Royal Commission"? Why is he not on trial?

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse is a wide ranging investigation into many institutions, and the investigation into the Ballarat and the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne is just one of many facets of it's work.

More information is available on it's website

media releases on current & previous investigations

The Commission can refer cases to Police services.

Pell is using the Sargeant Schultz defence: "I know nothing"!. He can't be prosecuted until they find hard evidence on him. Criminal court action requires a higher standard of evidence in order to gain a conviction whereas Civil court action can get a conviction of 'guilty" based on the balance of probabilities which is a lesser standard of proof.

MInd you if the Commission finds against Pell then there is the small issue of getting him out of the Vatican and back to Australia and then whether the RC Church is going to stand by their man and fund his defence. I'm guessing they might be able to afford a half way decent lawyer or two!

So lets see what else comes up and what the RC recommends in its report as far as criminal prosecutions go. The sad thing is that some of these buggers (no pun intended) are so old they may well fall off their perches before they can be charged and of course we all know Pell is too unwell to fly back to Australia to attend Court in person isn't he?

Cheers,

Andrez

Several top awards in fact - all well deserved.
Plenty more were that came from - 'Mea Culpa' (non fiction) 'Philomena' ( based on real events), The Magdalene Sisters, 'Ballad of a Raggy Boy', 'Boys of St Vincents' (Canada)....
Just watched the wonderful 'Oranges and Sunshine', about the kids shipped from Britian for slave labour and the sexual gratification of the monks in Australia - another masterpiece.
this story is due to run and run and is becoming world-wide on a big scale in its implications.

I agree Jim, the implications are huge and thats what the 'church' (of all denominations) is afraid of.

The Oz 'victims' and supporters are now asking for a meeting with the Pope himself. Interesting to see what response they get to that request. Apparently the only way they can ask for an audience is by fax. They have done so but are still waiting for a reply.

Pell is now claiming the church hierarchy lied to him for reasons unknown and he is now trying to blame them. Pathetic to say the least methinks!

Andrez

the dead and dying ones lied to him the most.

the pope chose this disturbed man..if be can be called that..for number three position. his history is known. he has been credibly accused of abuse himself as a seminarian. police are investigating for other accusations against him. he was horribly cruel to survivors. he is a nasty piece of work. but there is someone worse and he is in new york.

the latest Cardinal George Pell has told the child abuse royal commission he was deceived in a world of crime and cover-ups by people who did not want the status quo disturbed.

Australia's most senior Catholic claimed he was not briefed properly or adequately by the Catholic Education Office and Archbishop about abuse in Ballarat and Melbourne.

Giving evidence from Rome's Hotel Quirinale for a third day, Cardinal Pell told the commission he believed the information was kept from him because he would have acted on it.

"They realised very clearly I was not cut from the same cloth," he told the inquiry. (READ ON)

is anyone more disgusted than me? I have known about Pell for years and his at least as slimey counterpart in new york. I have written the pope. i will write again saying

Fire, and do not wait for resignations or Pell's convenient birthdayin June, both Pell and Muller.
IF you don't fire jolly new yorker then put him on strictest probation.

Then resign. Keep working as a spiritual leader, and a very good one, but you are a failure as a leader of a criminal organization.

could someone help me who knows soundcloud or another free site? I have a cd assembled a couple of years ago for adult survivors of abuse. i need to get it up. and i need to make sure that the singers names are not used or show up on a computer because i promised confidentiality..

cd has some great songs with wildly differing recording quality..some quite professional..some me singing into a little handheld and planning to upgradel but never did. :But the point is to get the songs out to the survivors right away. I can not do it on my work computer and home computer is iffy on sound...

i could mail someone in us a cd to upload or whatever but you have to be able to assure me that identifiers will be stripped...

In Ireland we have had a series of 'tribunals' - equivalent to that Royal Commission investigation. They started in the 1990s with an interminable investigation into the dealings in Irish beef by Larry Goodman, went on through the Moriarty tribunal investigating allegations of bribery in relation to the allocation of the first mobile phone licence; more on institutional child abuse and Magdalen Laundries and I think symphisiotomies… and on and on.

I don't see the point of these. We all wave our hands around and wail as the tribunals reveal horrors - but because they're sworn tribunals and people give evidence in them on condition it can't be used in any later Garda investigation, no matter what is revealed, no one faces any sanctions other than public exposure, which is soon forgotten.

Virtually all of the people who have been exposed as giving or taking bribes, ruining the country's reputation, harming children, running moneymaking adoption scams and slave labour, etc, etc are still walking around free as a bird and with their reputation magically restored by the forgetfulness of time.

As a catholic of more than 70 ears, I am constantly appalled at the revelations that come to light. However these have nothing to do with what I believe in and simply reflect the misuse and protectiveness provided to these criminals by the Church temporal.
I was educated by so called "Christian" Brothers and could tell some tales there. THEIR ONE AIM SEEMED TO BE TO INFLICT PAIN ON LITTLE BOYS AND I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT MOST OF THEM DERIVED PLEASURE FROM DOING SO.I believe that much of the abuse of children and young people happened at a time when they were not seen as important or entitled to opinions or views. I refer to the Jesuit mantra "Spare the rod and spoil the child"
Interesting that Pope Francis is a Jesuit. Does he subscribe to that?
