Help! I'm after a copy of 'Rudyard Kipling Made Exceedingly Good Songs'.

I've looked in all the obvious places...

If anyone knows where I can find one, vinyl, CD or digital, I'd be exceedingly grateful.

Likewise I saw one vinyl copy on ebay years ago and bid over £100 for it only to be sniped at the last hurdle - think it went for about £120.
An incredibly nice guy on Mudcat helped me out with this though - so someone out there may be able to do the same.

Thank you, Mudcatters!

I now have a number of leads to the recording. I shan't close the thread yet. What a great community we are...

Sorry, it will be sometime next week your digital copy will arrive . . . hubby is putting in long hours at work and he's strapped for time.

I have an mp3'd copy if you want it sooner. Email me at the support email address on this_page.

It collected PB LPs back in the pre-digital days. I really wanted Barrack Room Ballads and got a copy from the US - it's on Green Linnet. I went to the bank and bought some dollar bills - about $5 IIRC - and posted them off. It arrived by post a few weeks later.

Peter used to make homemade tapes of his records and take them to folk clubs. Did he do this one? I wouldn't mind a copy myself, but I wouldn't pay £120 for a record.

Feel free to email me - see my recent post. I transferred all my PB LPs and cassette tapes to CDs years ago, and made mp3s at the same time. The quality is not great - hard disks were expensive then. Some have since appeared on CD - but not this one AFAIK.

Wow! The kindness of strangers knows no bounds: I've been deluged with offers and mp3s. To all of you - bless you!

I've just found a listing on the Discogs website for another of Peter's self-released cassettes entitled '1974/7', out in 1977. If anyone knows more, or indeed has it, I'd really appreciate hearing from you.

According to the Discogs website, '1974/7' is a private re-issue of the American album 'Peter Bellamy' with two additional tracks from 'The Tale of Ale' and two tracks from 'The First Folk Review Record'. All tracks are available on CD from Fellside and Free Reed.

Dear Reinhard

Thank you - as I could have discovered myself if I'd bothered to cross-check... I do have all those tracks already. Oops...

By now I have all of Peter's official albums but I'm still lacking the cassettes Soldiers Three, 10, and Sharon and the Students which are referred to in Wake the Vaulted Echoes. Anyone willing to share?

I'm too prehistoric to do digital music, although I would love to acquire an Exceedingly Good Songs copy. Anyone selling a cassette or a CD?

I'd love to have that. I'd be very grateful if you could email me at the support address on my Mudcat_addon page.

And if anyone else wants mp3s of Kipling Made Exeedingly Good Songs, do email me at the same address.

Co-incidentally, one LP I never found, back in the 80s when I was collecting PB was Mainly Norfolk. But I probably have most of the songs on CD by now.

Apols, I was "Guest" with the "Soldiers Three" cassette. Was accessing from remote machine, and didn't realise I wasn't logged in. Will follow up ASAP.

PS Port Fairy Folk Festival was super - especially The Young'uns....

DaveRo,

"Mainly Norfolk" was officially re-issued complete on the Fellside 2-CD set "Fair England's Shore" (2008), along with the other Xtra LP "Fair England's Shore" and the Topic LP "The Fox Jumps Over the Parson's Gate."

Three really rare Bellamy LPs on two CDs for the price of one CD. Gotta be bargain of the century....

If you really crave vinyl, copies of "MN" are regularly on eBay for around 30 quid (they use to be over 100 back in the day...)

Yes, I have those CDs. I certainly don't crave vinyl, I was delighted when CD reissues started appearing. But before that Mainy Norfolk was top of the records on my 'wanted' list - a fact that Reinhard's site's name reminded me. But I'm over that now.

I never collected cassette tapes, though I did buy Songs an' Rummy Conjurin' Tricks. It was only recently, when I read this_thread that I realised that Soldiers Three includes a few Kipling songs I haven't heard.

Good to hear the Young'uns mentioned by Hagman - a top band with great vocal harmonies. If you like that kind of thing you'll love this band - they really are at the top of their game at the moment.

Taking this opportunity to say a big Thank You to member DaveRo. He got a CD copy to me of "Rudyard Kipling Made Exceedingly Good Songs."

I'm fascinated with "Heriot's Ford" because Kipling's text is an obvious homage to the tragic traditional English ballads; Bellamy's melody, I don't know if it is a traditional melody, or one original to Bellamy that behaves like a trad tune. But hearing Bellamy sing it a cappella is thrilling. An ignorant listener could be forgiven, hearing this performance, for believing that this setting of Kipling was actually out of the trad repertoire.

Bellamy fans will not be disappointed or surprised with The Young'uns - they are self-confessed PB fans. They carry the flag....

You've just discovered the trick and the genius of both Bellamy and Kipling....!

Play "Green Fields of England" from The Transports to anyone, and ask them what year it was first performed.... not many will get close to 1977

I made a Peter Bellamy Reddit that has links to downloads for all of the out of print recordings (including LPs never released on CD) and bootlegs that I could find. People are free to contribute if they wish: https://www.reddit.com/r/PeterBellamy/comments/ohlra6/out_of_print_and_bootleg_recordings/

I did this partly because mudcat.org makes zero sense to me as a website. It's such a great resource, but I have no idea how to navigate this place.

Thanks, welcome Guest, for giving me the biggest laugh of the day.
The Mudcat Cafe is a relic from another era,
and so are some of us Mudcatters.

I am so old, that I grew up and went all the way through
post-graduate university schooling
WITHOUT computers,
I wrote my term papers on a typewriter.
I'm still no good with computers much less 'smartphones,'
only this year I acquired my first laptop computer
and I have never owned a mobile phone device.

No wonder you think this place is weird!
A hearty welcome to you!

Old, keberoxu?
When I was at university I didn't know anyone who had a typewriter. All essays and exams were written by hand. And people wrote letters to each other to keep in touch and/or arrange to meet. How the world has changed.

Same here... I still have a few longhand written reports from those days in my cupboard, they make a nice keepsake!

I did have a calculator, and (later in the piece) access to a photocopier, to avoid those carbon copies when I eventually did acquire a typewriter to type my draft of a thesis, 7 years later - although I did hand my rough typescript (with squiggles and crossings out) to a proper typist to produce the "fair copy"!

Reddit pages can be displayed in the old format by substituting 'old' for 'www' so it becomes
old.reddit.com/...

So that Peter Bellamy subreddit is at
https://old.reddit.com/r/PeterBellamy/

(I do that on Android, otherwise it insists I use its app.)
