I'm coming anyway... Not that we have Trump of course, but we have Boris and Cam moron.

I'll land at Calgary in about a month's time, hire a SUV, staying with friends in Canmore a few days then hit the slopes at Sunshine, Lake Louise and Kicking Horse. Might even manage a few other small slopes we haven't tried yet.

I don't know about staying though. The coffee is debatable and the beer too fizzy but I've had some good cow and bambi. Northwood guitars aren't bad either...

Not too impressed with this "it isn't a visa but" that I had to buy online today. $7.00 plus about the same in real money my credit card will charge for the transaction. Lasts as long as my present passport though so hey ho.

Bollocks. Excellent variety of beans available here, straight into my bean to cup machine. The last Canadian who I heard bragging about his coffee, and dissing British coffee to boot, eventually admitted that he bought his as ready-ground powder out of open industrial-sized sacks in a warm shop and he bought enough of that to last him for days. Anyone here even thinking of crowing about coffee who doesn't start with beans kept in a refrigerated airtight container would be well advised to observe a period of silence!

One of the things I admire about America is the fact that Trump will not succeed, but he can run. Democracy is a delicate thing, but I think America understands that and will survive this and learn from it.

Canadian coffee is an acquired taste. Usually I just buy a pound and boil it in a few gallons of water until the water turns very dark brown. Stop cooking the beans and allow the water to cool. That lets the scum get reabsorbed into the beans. Allow it to 'rest' overnight then put it back on low heat and take a cupful as needed. If you leave it on a slow simmer, be sure to keep the water level in the pot above the coffee otherwise you'll end up straining it with your teeth.

PS That'll last about three weeks in summer and ten days in winter; of course that will also depend on whether people get carried away and have more than six or seven cups a day.

Steve, you'd blanch if I told you about how we made tea north of 60. I'll digress for clarity. North of 60 is a Canadian expression for north of 60 in latitude. It includes the subarctic and arctic regions.

Start with a good-sized pot. Boil water (a good gallon or more) and then take the pot off the heat. Toss in three or four teabags. That's all the attention it needs. When it cools too much, reheat it. If many people are drinking from it, just keep adding water and tea bags. There will come a point at which one should remove the bags. A rule of thumb is ten. Good for a few days with that. Some carvers while they are working on walrus tusk will toss it into the pot to help 'colour' the ivory. But rest assured that that doesn't interfere with the taste of the tea.

After the American Revolution, one of my ancestors had to build barracks on his land on the Yamachiche River in southwestern Quebec to accommodate refugees hiking north out of what is now Vermont and New Hampshire. We call those folks Loyalists now.

Ok.. Let me clarify...

A few years ago in a Starbucks in Banff, I asked for a double espresso. The guy said he'll make it stronger than normal because we have our coffee stronger in The UK.

He shouted "real coffee for my English friend!" I thanked him profusely and took it to my table. It was, to misquote a relative, "water bewitched, coffee be buggered."

I never mentioned tea because we have excellent tea in each and every hotel room we use abroad. Mrs Musket takes "Yorkshire Tea" teabags in her luggage. I was raised on Glenghetti but it's difficult to come by, and only sold loose.

Not sure what Lilo means by British coffee. I didn't realise there was such a thing. Sure, instant coffee is awful but I doubt I've had any in thirty years. I stick to tea in homes where I don't see any coffee ironmongery. Sadly, being a caffeine freak, I have two bean to cup machines. One built into the kitchen and its predecessor in my study.

Funnily enough, despite all that, it was in Canada where I had possibly the best coffee outside of Europe. On Granville in Vancouver at a microbrewery. (Sobering up after a tasting session or seven.)

Mrs Steve and I were total aliens to coffee until a trip to Venice in 2010. We would never touch instant (still won't), which is devil's vomit, or even that disgusting powdered muck in a vacuum brick that you put into a pretentious piece of nonsense known as a "cafetiere". What happened is that we stopped at a cafe in Burano for a cup of tea. Joke. Small cup of tepid water with a Lipton's tea bag. We stopped a few minutes later at another joint and ordered a cappuccino. Didn't even know what one was. Suffice to say we had a few more of those on our trip and never looked back. I still understand only cappuccinos and espressos. Don't have a clue as to what these bloody macchiatos, flat whites and Americanos are. With my bean to cup machine I can take thought and have a bloody good double espresso in front of me in sixty seconds. No sugar, thanks.

By the way, been through some magnificent beans from Whittards, but for bog-standard damn good beans try Waitrose Italian-style. Always beans, never that powdered shite.

Well, how precious is that!

Part of the travel experience is trying new things, new tastes. You might not like what you try - but that doesn't make it better or worse to home, just different. If you take your own food and/or drink why bother to travel at all? (food allergies and medical problems are an exception) Why not just stay home and watch travel documentaries? It would be a darn sight cheaper.

We have had good coffee in Canada, and also had some which was fairly indifferent. We've had excellent wines, and some we didn't like as much. Himself has enjoyed most Canadian beers he has tried although there were one or two he didn't care for, he's also a fan of Canadian whiskies......and we both like Sortilege Maple Whisky, we haven't quite finished the bottle we brought home late last year. We've had some great meals, a few (fortunately very few) where we wondered why we bothered, and one which was probably the best meal, accompanied by some of the best wines, we have ever had in our lives.

We have loved our Canadian visits and hope, provided we aren't too old, too poor and too crook to travel, to fit in at least another trip before we both depart this mortal coil.

So, Dan - if you go into exile in the Great White North can you please keep a spare room for a couple of occasionally visiting Aussies? Many thanks!

Och, Steve, say what you really mean. Canadian cuisine is also a matter of taste, and on occasion, lack thereof. My preferred meal is filet mignon, but then there are cod cheeks (a hundred times better than scallops), and moose nose. Allow me to put forth a Canadian delicacy: Muskrat au Coin.

1) Get a muskrat and kill it.
2) Skin it 'teeth back'. That's a method of taking the pelt off the dead animal and wasting as little as possible. (Mink farms will purchase the flesh to feed their denizens.)
3) Subtly, immerse the warm dead carcass in water eminently and impenitently approaching the boil.
4) Let it cook on a furious boil for ten minutes. (I'll explain that. It doesn't mean a boil like a cyst; rather, it means real hot water.)
5) Then bring it to a simmer for six hours.
6) Order a pizza while you're waiting.
7) When the muskrat is tender, dine.

Voila: Haut cuisine.

Serve with a strong coffee or tea. I avoid milk in the recipe because it curdles. But done with a Devonshire cream it is little short of ambrosia. "The musk-bag is put between the cloaths in order to preserve them against worms." ('Wild Plums in Brandy' by Boorman and published by McGraw-Hill in 1962.)

That's part of the reason we drink bad beer. :-)

Jesus Christ on a bloody bike, all I said was I take a supply of tea bags. I went to Sicily last year and ate bloody whole octopodes and weird little shrimps and loved every mouthful. I went to Spain and ate raw fish and a seafood paella that even the locals wouldn't eat. Don't give me that patronising you're-an-English-tourist bollocks. Overseas, I go out of my way to eat whatever local stuff is on offer and I'll eat stuff that you lot would turn your noses up at. I'll eat pork of dodgy provenance and slices of cured meat in my salmorejo that look like they're ten years old. I use only local butchers and fishmongers and will not buy frozen or processed food. I'll eat anything and I insist on doing so. All I want is a bleedin' cup of tea fer chrissake. Go and shit on your stereotypes. I ain't one, not by a country mile. I think you may have mentioned that once before, the muscat on ice cream thing. Except for your mention, I'd never heard of it. We had/have a phenomenon here called Dairy Queen. I don't know if you have them there, but suffice it to say. . . Best ice cream I ever had was home-made in California. Fresh cream, fresh peaches and about 45 minutes of elbow grease.

Yeah but seriously Gnu? Surely the only way to make a Canada thread interesting is to hijack the bugger? The minute I injected coffee into the thread, Lilo chipped in and as ever, it drifted into cuisine.

But would I move there if Boris became PM? Our friends in Canmore moved out about four years ago. Alberta rolled the red carpet out for UK doctors and they never looked back. Mrs Musket meanwhile gets lots of agents contacting her about moving there, Aussieland, Kiwicountry etc in a similar way.

Naw. We visit for the skiing, as we visit Aussieland to see relatives and get bitten / stung and to be honest, we did start entertaining the idea when we were in Kiwiland last, (even viewed a couple of properties.) As I said in another thread, I have right of residency in The USA but I doubt I'll be buying Dan's pad off him as he moves into Gnu's spare room.

But civilisation starts in Geordieland and ends somewhere near Nottingham. Sure, you can pop down Steve's way for overpriced gourmet fish or London for just about any and every cuisine known but beer n pork scratchings need the terroir of God's own county.
