Musical Chameleon: Can't Hold Melody

For the first time in my life, I was singing with a friend and when they harmonized with me, I was able to stay on melody. Usually having the harmony makes me go off and sing in the direction of the person singing with me... woot woot!

Anybody else have this problem? I talk in people's accents, too.

It is easy to follow melody.

It takes talent and ear to find the 4 th, and 7 th in harmony.

For me, even sticking to a melody is hard if others near me are singing other notes. I was the child the music teachers placed between others with a better sense of pitch. If I listened to them, my voice was more likely to hit the right notes. I'm sure you are correct, GUEST, that singing harmony is harder, but I didn't think that's what this thread was about. Perhaps I misunderstood. And Mrrzy, congratulations on your recent success at staying in tune. I hope that continues to happen.

Right, I wasn't comparing singing harmony vs. melody, I was asking who else can't maintain the melody if being harmonized with, and ChanteyLass, I am surprised it's you!

My inability to hold onto the melody when someone is singing harmony makes chantey singing a good fit for me. Knowing my weakness is why I only started leading songs in public within the last year. I wrote new verses of a song using a traditional tune and chorus. I can sing the verses alone, and when others bring in harmonies on the chorus, if I find my voice drifting, I can be quiet until it's time for me to lead the next verse. I'm working on another song, original this time, and I can hear the tune in my head, but when I try to sing it aloud it sounds nothing like what I hear in my head.

Just as with any musical instrument, singing in harmony can be taught. It takes a special kind of focus to stay on your part whilst others around you are singing something different.

My main problem these days is, I spent so many years teaching and leading a chorus, I'm listening to all the parts at once, and sometimes forget which part I'm supposed to be singing!

"Who else can't maintain the melody if being harmonized with?"

Me.

After 60 years of trying to sing the same notes as the person next to me, I find I now automatically go wherever they do, irrespective of where I actually want to go.
