Lyr Req: My hat it has three corners

I created a similar thread for a similar song, but this is a different song. My Dad used to sing this ditty.

My hat it has three corners
three corners has my hat
and if it hadn't three corners
then it would not be my hat.

Anyone know anything about this song? Where'd it come from? Are there more lyrics?

I have a feeling that it must be Scandinavian; at least I'd never heard it before I came to Norway and here it's something that every pre-school child knows as part of their basic repertoire. Unfortunately only one verse in Norwegian as well so far as I know (but you could always do it in English, then in Norwegian...:-) Here's the Norwegian version (it's almost the same in Swedish and Danish, and is equally well known in both countries):

Min hatt den har tre kanter
Tre kanter har min hatt
Og har den ei tre kanter
Så er den ei min hatt

The version I know has, for the last lines,

And had it not three corners
It would not be my hat.

It was an action song, with words replaced by actions until all was silence except for

it hasbr hasbr and had it not
it would not be

I can't remember the actions.

I still sing this song. You miss out the word hat the second time you sing it. Then corners the third time. Then you miss out three. then you sing the full version. You can do actions if you want, touching your head, holding three fingers up, and making a corner by putting your hand together at finger tips. Its a bit of fun.

kindest regards

You all have refreshed my memory. I recall hearing it in a German or (was it Norwegian) ... and I remember the bit about leaving out a word. Thanks!

The German for hat is Hut (pronounced hoot). Don't forget, all German nouns are capitalized, not just proper nouns. Thank you for bringing up this song; it brings back memories of childhood. My mother taught it to me in English, and I remember learning the German in high school.

so, I just wanted to check ONE thread quickly, before starting what will be a looooooong difficult day. Caught this thread title, and HAD to click on it. Here I am, in front of my computor, patting my chest (for "my"); patting my head (for "hat"), and making the three and the corner with my hands...singing the song...trying to remember the sign in it for "has" we did when I was a child!!!! I AM supposed to be preparing for a staff meeting,...you know......like an adult. Thanks for the memory and the giggle Liam. If I remember the sign for "has" during the staff meeting I'll have to excuse myself to do the song......or.....maybe, just do it!!!

The sign for "had" (not has) is to bring your hand up to and over your shoulder as if you were indicating the past tense.

Liam, thanks for the memories of this song. Mine are much more foggy than most of the 'catters. I grew up in Concord, MA and always assumed this was an American song because the Minutemen in the Revolutionary War wore a three cornered hat called a Tricon. At least that is what my memory says. I'm amazed that people know this song in other languages. Must be older than I thought. I now remember singing this song in elementary school with all the gestures and word droppings. But I never would have remembered this on my own. Thanks to all.

Emily

emily b - we're neighbors! Or at least, used to be neighbors. I grew up in Canton, and lived many years in Southboro - just down the raod a piece from you. Of course, nowI live in Dallas, and that's quite a bit down the road from you!

I remember thinking the same thing about the song as a child, but later on heard it sung in German, and realized it was probably older the the Revolutionary War era.

The reason I ask about this song (and actually I started another hat song thread at the same time I started this one) is because I sing both of these songs in a medley, along with some harmonica parts ... since I was already performing them, I thought I'd like to know a bit about them!

When I was a boy, we had a minister who used to spend time with the young folks. We played games and sang songs. One of them was the hat thing, which we sang to the tune of Carnival of Venice. He also added another song which we did as a medley. It went..

One day while I was riding on the subway
My tall silk hat, my tall silk hat
I laid it on the seat beside me, my tall silk hat etc.
A big fat lady came and sat upon it, my tall silk hat etc
Christopher Columbus what do you think of that?
A big fat lady sat upon my hat, my tall silk etc.
Christopher Columbus what do you think of that?

The second ditty was sung to the tune of (pardon my Italian) Feniculi Fenicula

From: Uilleand

Here the German version. My sources cite that the text is from 1886 in the area of the river Saar. The melody is from an 1818 Neapolitan folksong called 'O cara mama mia', also used by and/or attributed to Paganini.

Mein Hut der hat drei Ecken,
drei Ecken hat mein Hut,
und haett' er nicht drei Ecken,
dann waer's auch nicht mein Hut.

Hope this helps.

Kendall,

I remember singing (to the tune of Funiculi Funicula)

Christopher Columbus, what do you think of that?
A big fat lady sat upon my hat
My hat it broke and that's no joke
My hat it broke and that's no joke!

But I can't remember what we used as the last line.

My 94 year old mother has dementia and struggles to remember lots of things, even myself and siblings at times.
She was born and raised in Berlin and has lived in England since 1948, recently she has started singing the hat song in german but we never knew anything about the song or where it came from, we now know it was a german nursery rhyme and kids song.
Thanks to all the contributors for their input

We have 10 versions of it on Mama Lisa's World. You can find the lyrics of the first song sung to the tune "O la cara mia mama" on Wikisource:

O cara la mia mama,
sì senza compassión
a lasciarmi qui in filanda
morir de la passion.

E se fudesse 'l caso
te tegnarìa a cà,
te mandarìa a scola
a imprend a lavurà.

Inscí perché sun povera
mi podi fà nient,
sta pura alegrament,
stu mund al finirà.

Translation in standard Italian

Oh, cara la mia mamma
sei senza compassione
se mi lasci qui alla filanda
a morire di sofferenza.

E se fosse il caso
ti terrei a casa,
ti manderei a scuola
a imparare a lavorare.

Così poiché son povera
non posso fare niente,
stai pure allegramente,
questo mondo finirà.

Google translation into English:

Oh, my dear mom
you are without compassion
if you leave me here at the spinning mill
to die of suffering.

What if that were the case
I would keep you at home
I'd send you to school
to learn to work.

So because I am poor
I can not do anything,
stay happy,
this world will end.

I have had the fragment Christopher Columbus, whaddaya think of that / A big a fat a lady sat upon my hat in my brain all my life. Never saw the context before.

Love this place.

The songs with missing bits, though, reminds me of a song they taught us in beginning Hungarian, about Peter and Paul Hajmási, who in various verses go away [then next verse you skip that name] and then might stay away, or come back [if so, in next verse the name is sung]. It teaches the verbs for coming and going and staying, and the declensions for away and back, plus it is a riot singing the verse where they are both gone. And trying not to screw up when not to sing the names.

But no gestures, just silence, for the beat it would have taken to sing the name.

Which I had also forhotten about.

Love this place.

Our German friend once sang this at Llantrisant Folk Club, and introduced it by saying it came from South West Germany, where the border with France has often been disputed and moved around. German hats had three corners, French hats had two. So it was a song of allegiance.
There may be other views.

It's interesting to notice how we use our fingers according to our culture. Some show 3 as forefinger, middle finger and ring finger while some show thumb, forefinger and middle finger.
In French, as the lyrics say "My hat it has four bumps" we show 4 fingers and we touch the back of our shoulder as if we had a hump. There's a Spanish version with "My beard has three hairs" and the Indonesian version says "My hat is round", the actions change accordingly.

Thought I'd mention that there was an episode of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood where Fred Rogers sang "My hat it has three corners", while donning a three-corner hat.
