My hat it has three corners three corners has my hat and if it hadn't three corners then it would not be my hat. Anyone know anything about this song? Where'd it come from? Are there more lyrics? |

Then corners the third time. Then you miss out three. then you sing the full version. You can do actions if you want, touching your head, holding three fingers up, and making a corner by putting your hand together at finger tips. Its a bit of fun.

Caught this thread title, and HAD to click on it. Here I am, in front of my computor, patting my chest (for "my"); patting my head (for "hat"), and making the three and the corner with my hands...singing the song...trying to remember the sign in it for "has" we did when I was a child!!!! I AM supposed to be preparing for a staff meeting,...you know......like an adult. Thanks for the memory and the giggle Liam. If I remember the sign for "has" during the staff meeting I'll have to excuse myself to do the song......or.....maybe, just do it!!! |

I grew up in Concord, MA and always assumed this was an American song because the Minutemen in the Revolutionary War wore a three cornered hat called a Tricon. At least that is what my memory says. I'm amazed that people know this song in other languages. Must be older than I thought. I now remember singing this song in elementary school with all the gestures and word droppings. I grew up in Canton, and lived many years in Southboro - just down the raod a piece from you. Of course, nowI live in Dallas, and that's quite a bit down the road from you! I remember thinking the same thing about the song as a child, but later on heard it sung in German, and realized it was probably older the the Revolutionary War era. |

Never saw the context before. Love this place. The songs with missing bits, though, reminds me of a song they taught us in beginning Hungarian, about Peter and Paul Hajmási, who in various verses go away [then next verse you skip that name] and then might stay away, or come back [if so, in next verse the name is sung]. It teaches the verbs for coming and going and staying, and the declensions for away and back, plus it is a riot singing the verse where they are both gone. And trying not to screw up when not to sing the names. But no gestures, just silence, for the beat it would have taken to sing the name. Which I had also forhotten about. Love this place. |

Some show 3 as forefinger, middle finger and ring finger while some show thumb, forefinger and middle finger. In French, as the lyrics say "My hat it has four bumps" we show 4 fingers and we touch the back of our shoulder as if we had a hump. There's a Spanish version with "My beard has three hairs" and the Indonesian version says "My hat is round", the actions change accordingly. |
