30 Mar 16 - 06:19 AM (#3782205) Subject: Men of Staithes recordings From: GUEST,George Frampton I'm compiling information about East Coast (UK) fisher choirs, comparing and contrasting the history and repertoire of each. John Howson recorded the Men of Staithes and published the result on cassette at some time in the 1980s, this is now on CD (alas, in mp3 only format). I feel sure that the choir itself issued another CD at a later stage; at least, I believe I saw this in a Veteran catalogue which I no longer have. Can anyone out there confirm the CD#'s existence and tell me more, including what songs/hymns are/were on it. Details of this recording don't seem to appear anywhere on the 'net, and subsequent Veteran catalogues seem no longer to include it. |

However I have a feeling that a friend has at least one album of the Men of Staithes. I'm seeing him tomorrow so I will ask. Incidentally there are a few videos of the choir on you tube. I have a feeling though that they are known as Men of Staithes, not Staithes Fishermens Choir. |

30 Mar 16 - 11:16 AM (#3782263) Subject: RE: Men of Staithes recordings From: Matthew Edwards Your memory is spot on; there was a second collection of Shanties and Hymns issued on a cassette, Seashore, produced in 1991 for the Staithes Men's Choir as a private production. I don't know whether John Howson was involved indirectly as he isn't credited in the notes. There are several compositions by Joe Skilbeck, who was then the choir accompanist. The tracks are: Side A 1. Seashore (Joe Skilbeck) 2. The Church in the Wildwood 3. The Saviour with me 4. Down to Whitby Town (Joe Skilbeck) 5. Near the Cross 6. Blessed Assurance 7. Lowlands 8. Guardian Angel Side B 1. Send the Light 2. The Arms of the Cross (Joe Skilbeck) 3. The Anchor's Weigh'd 4. The Everlasting Arms 5. Farewell Shanty 6. 'Tis Heaven there 7. Still Sweeter every day 8. The Last Farewell 9. The Whispers of Jesus 10. I will Pilot Thee Matthew |
30 Mar 16 - 06:21 PM (#3782339) Subject: RE: Men of Staithes recordings From: Matthew Edwards There is a very well researched article (MT010) by Danny Stradling on the Musical Traditions website on The Staithes Men's Choir. The article mentions yet another, third, collection of songs by the choir called Pull For the Shore. This was recorded by John Howson and issued on cassette, but not on the Veteran label. Matthew |
