07 Dec 99 - 04:34 PM (#146120) Subject: Lyr/Tune Add: MARIA WALKS AMID THE THORN From: MMario I found this out on a Catholic website; recommended as and Advent Carol. Per the site a medieval origin, approx 15th century.
Maria walks amid the thorn Does anyone know if there is more to this? Th etune looks to me like it may work as a round.....The website mentions repeated Kyrie's so I would think it either has more verses or is sung in a round

07 Dec 99 - 05:02 PM (#146142) Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Maria Walks Amid the Thorn From: Uilleand It's a translation of a 16th century Christmas Carol from Thueringen in Germany. I believe there are about 7 verses, although I've mostly only sung the first 3. "Maria durch ein Dornwald ging" |

07 Dec 99 - 05:18 PM (#146154) Subject: Lyr Add: MARIA DURCH EIN'N DORNWALD GING From: Uilleand Of course I would. It's one of my favorite carols. Although I don't know about this HTML pagebreak thing yet. So maybe someone could do that for me.
Maria durch ein'n Dornwald ging,
Was trug Maria unter ihrem Herzen?
Da haben die Dornen Rosen getragen,
Wie soll dem Kind sein Name sein?
Wer soll dem Kind sein Täufer sein?
Was kriegt das Kind zum Patengeld?
Wer hat erlöst die Welt allein? |

07 Dec 99 - 06:35 PM (#146192) Subject: Lyr Add: MARIA DURCH EIN DORNWALD GING (German) From: Joe Offer MARIA DURCH EIN DORNWALD GING (Blest Mary Wanders Through the Thorn) (German Traditional) Maria durch ein' Dornwald ging Kyrie eleison! Maria durch ein' Dornwald ging, der hatte in sieb'n Jah'n kein Laub getrag'n Jesus und Maria! Was trug Maria unter ihrem Herzen? Kyrie eleison! Kyrie eleison! BLEST MARY WANDERS THROUGH THE THORN (German Traditional) Blest Mary wanders through the thorn, Kyrie eleison! Blest Mary wanders through the thorn, That seven long years no bloom hath borne. Jesu et Maria! What clasps she to her breast so close? Kyrie eleison! An innocent child doth there repose, Which to her breast she claspeth close. Jesu et Maria! Fair roses bloom on every tree, Kyrie eleison! As through the thorn-wood passeth she Fair roses bloom on every tree. Jesu et Maria! What shall this Infant cal-led be? Kyrie eleison! The Christ, he shall be called truly, Which Name he hath borne from eternity. Jesu et Maria! This holy Name, who shall proclaim? Kyrie eleison! Saint John Baptist shall do the same, This holy Name he shall proclaim. Jesu et Maria! What christening-gifts to him are giv'n? Kyrie eleison! All things that be, the earth, the heav'n, As christening-gifts to him are giv'n. Jesu et Maria! Who hath the world from sin set free? Kyrie eleison! This Child alone, and only he, He hath the world from sin set free. Jesu et Maria! ^^ This has many of the characteristics of a fifteenth-century German folk carol. The flowering rose is a favorite medieval image and the subject of a multitude of legends. The barren thorn-wood is an image of the fallen world (Genesis 2:9; 3:18), and the birth of Christ, with its promise of redemption, is symbolized by the return of the thorn trees to their prelapsarian condition. "Seven long years," like the Hebrew "forty days," denotes a long passage of time. -Joe Offer- |

08 Dec 99 - 12:33 PM (#146597) Subject: Lyr Add: MARIA WANDERED THROUGH A WOOD From: emily b I've learned a different translation to this song. The words are more simple. Less hymnlike, more folk song-ish. This is one of my favorite carols. MARIA WANDERED THROUGH A WOOD Maria Wandered Through a Wood Kyrie Eleison Through a barren wood of barren thorn that for seven years no bloom had born Jesus and Maria What did she lightly carry there Kyrie Eleison A child beneath her heart she bear Maria bear it lightly there Jesus and Maria And as the child was lightly born Kyrie Eleison Even as the child was lightly born Bright roses shone among the thorn Jesus and Maria |

08 Dec 99 - 03:11 PM (#146688) Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Maria Walks Amid the Thorn From: Joe Offer To clarify my note in the lyrics I posted, the translation I posted was from the editors of The Shorter New Oxford Book of Carols. The lyrics MMario and Emily posted have more of an authentic ring to them - I think they've been folk-processed a bit, and that puts a nice patina on them. Anybody have other English verses? -Joe Offer- |

Kyrie eleison. A little child doth Mary bear Beneath her heart he nestles there, Jesus and Maria. And as the two are passing near, kyrie eleison Lo! Roses on the the thorns appear! Lo!
