Subject: Lyr Req: Naughty rounds - anyone?

Hey all,
I am co-teaching a workshops called "Rude songs and rounds" We funny inappropriate songs (some naughty some nice) and we have rounds, but we don't have many funny/inappropriate rounds, except for Black socks Benji met the bear, and Dwarfs are Short. Does anyone have some that they would like to share? Alternate words to commonly sung rounds would be especially fun for folks.

Nice one! But perhaps could be improved by substituting 'bare' for 'dead'? Would depend, I suppose, on whether one's bag tends rather to SM or necrophilia!

I am willing to bet you will find a plentitude of naughtiness to round if you tap resources in the Rennfaire, Filk or Society for Creative Anachronism communities, should you have such contacts.

At a round singing party, an early music scholar brought in several Purcell catches - a catch essentially being a round. There was one about "Joan" (which we found humorous because that is his wife's name) but the one I'd known from a favourite album was in thr DT as follows:

CAKES AND ALE (CATCH)

(1) I gave her cakes and I gave her ale
I gave her sack and cherry
I kissed her once and I kissed her twice
And we were wanderers merry

(2) I gave her beads and bracelets fine
And I gave her gold down derry
I thought she was a-feared when she struck my beard
And we were wanderers merry

(3) Merry me hearts, merry me cocks, merry me sprites
Merry, merry, merry, merry, merry me hay down derry
I kissed her once and I kissed her twice
And we were wanderers merry

Lots of naughty rounds and catches. (Incidentally, in the last post, 'wanderers' ought to be 'wondrous').

Dr Edmund Ayrton, in 1778, wrote:

"The night he was wedded quoth Inigo Jones

Jonathan Battishill, in 1763, wrote a musical epitaph -

Purcell also wrote 'Pox on you for a Fop' which requires the singers to belch and fart in time.

Novello publishes 'The Aldrich Book of Catches' while Oxford University Press publish 'The Catch Book'.

When Cilia Was Learning on the Spinet to Play

Tom Making a Manteau

Two perfectly innocent lines, but when they are sung on top of each other the naughty bits are revealed.

The DT lyrics of Cakes and Ale have a few errors (struck, wanderers)
It should be:

Thanks all!
I added the nuns one to my list - I had totally forgotten about that one - thanks! The others are on my list to look into for next time, since they seem a bit much for me to learn and teach in two days. Does Jonathan Battishill's 1763 musical epitaph have a tune that creates a round? - I could manage that one if it was set to a simple tune. Where would I find it?

There are several performances of "I gave her cakes" on You Tube, including one by a "virtual singer" called Melody Assistant, which has the advantage of including a written score. Another catch by Purcell also rendered by Melody Assistant is "Once, twice, thrice, Julia I tried". Also known, apparently, as "Kiss my arse".

"My man John had a thing that was long" is fun as well (the thing is in fact a broom.)

The Battishill one is a round in four parts, available in the Aldrich book. Defining 'simple tune' is tricky - it is more difficult than the 'London's Burning' sort of round. Good luck.

Well, you have to have an appreciation of both German and Latin to make the most of Mozart's scatological rounds, he wrote two of them that I recall, maybe three?


with lines like "Leck mir im Arsch" and "Reck dem Arsch zum Mund."

I went for dead - I did tell them that that it was the authentic original. I kind of liked the dead buns cause I could imagine school children singing it versus the bare buns.
