Your favorite non personal instrument

Aside from one you play, what do you most like to hear? For me, it's the sax. I don't understand them and can't fathom playing one, but I love their wail. Mike

Fuck off, Guest.

For me it's the pedal steel guitar. I love the sound of it, the way it can bend multiple notes in a chord.

Not a stupid post at all! I love the cello and I have tried playing it, without success. I play a number of stringed instruments but , much to my regret! I cannot seem to master it. I love the lute as well, but have never attemtpted it. So much to learn , so little time.

What a complete wanker that GUEST is..!!!

Bagpipes - I'm rubbish at playing recorder and any similar wind instrument with holes for notes.

Hurdy Gurdy - Can't afford one.

Portative Organ - Ditto

Mellotron - Ditto

I am always keen on minimalist music based on tonally interesting drones...

I'll just have to make do with sample sets and a midi keyboard...

Uilleann pipes! But I've always been a lazy undisciplined bastid, so fugeddaboudit.

Trombone. I will never play one without bone grafts, dental implants and plastic surgery, but I have always loved the grandeur and dignity of that sound.

What a truly novel idea for a thread...

The sax "voice" is kindred to the soul.... or any of the other reed-woodwind instruments.

However, the cello is my choice...after three years in elementry...I abandoned it...but it plays with a soul.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle
bagpipes rank close for the whimsical approaching a circus calliope.

Harp. I've tried it, but I just don't do well with an instrument that goes out in front of me. No, I need an instrument that extends from left to right - piano, dulcimer, guitar.

Right, Gargoyle. We don't play wind instruments; they play us.

Thanks, 'catters, for having my back. Don't think I've ever been trolled before, if that's what that was? I agree with Pedal Steel and Cello, one rends the heart, and one does that and then some. As a half-assed guitarist I can't grok a stringed instrument without frets, violin/fiddle foremost. How in the hell do you know where you are? Mike

Fiddle/violin for me with tenor sax (especially when played by John Coltrane) a close second.

I love most instruments with the exception of badly played percussion but to answer the question my favourite non personal instrument would be the cello

It does seem that a lot of us like the cello. I especially love it when Jacqueline DuPre plays Elgar, just gorgeous.

When I first started getting into music around 1971 my favourite band was The Move.

Roy Wood captured my imagination through his enthusiasm to pick up any instrument and have a quick untutored bash at playing it..
The results immediately ending up on recorded tracks.

His early solo albums were gems of brilliant recordings constructed from multilayered tracks of amateurishly played instruments... 😎

.. then along came a 17 year old studio tea boy named Mike Oldfield....

I don't know if I'm allowed to count this because I do sort of play this instrument---but so badly that it doesn't reflect its true beauty.

I'm talking about the French Horn. Looking back at some of my favourite albums of all time, I recently came to realize how many of them are filled with the sound of the French Horn.

'Gone Through' so many in my time - Bagpipes , Clarinet , Sop , Aito and tenor sax , Whistle (Not Low D - hands too small) , guitar , banjo and mandolin and been paid for playing all of them , it doesn't leave much that I can afford to buy now . I've dabbled at Concertina , and violin and used to manage a basic scale on cornet !

If it was ones I'd "gone through", I may have given a different answer... ;-))

I've never actually tried the cello yet although I might be able to make some sort or noise out of it having played the fiddle.

Is the thread about instruments which we don't actually play ourselves? That's what I first thought.

It would have to be something that puts calluses on the fingers, because, wuss that I am, I could not bear to go that far, after all those years of keyboard study. The harp and the guitar are good examples.

I agree with leeneia, the harp is the instrument that can most hold me spellbound; it's just so delicately perfect! And I could never imagine learning to play it well myself.

The cello is beautiful too, and according to some is the instrument closest in sound to the human voice.

But, I've never much enjoyed the saxophone. Which is strange; because an ex-partner was a very good sax player, but I still didn't change my opinion. I guess it's always just a matter of personal taste, in the end.

The sax was done to death in the 1980's - all that sophisticated easy listening rock, pop, and soft porn soundtrack music..

.. which is a shame when you remember how exciting raw rude honking sax used to sound in classic vintage rock 'n' roll records..

Btw.. I also vote for pedal steel, and Fender Rhodes piano..

Cello for me. I love it's mellow low end sound.
Also like the fiddle and the husky sax.
For the sound of loneliness, you can't beat the harmonica.
(Might suit guest in post 2 😉 )
