The place: Camp Ramblewood, near Darlington, Maryland, on the banks of the Susquehanna River. It's about an hour-an-a-half North of Washington, DC. If you're flying in , the nearest airports are actually Baltimore and Philadelphia. The place is not too far away from beatiful downtown Mudcatville (Max's place, in real life, where the server for Mudcat resides physically). For those who need to fly in, Baltimore has lots of Mark your calendars now. --Charlie Baum Print out the registration form . It's in the .pdf format, which means it's readable using Adobe Acrobat Reader, a free program obtainable here if you don't have it already. You can print it out on your printer--just set your page setup to "fit to page". Fill out the form, write out a check for the appropriate amount, and send it to: FSGW Getaway c/o J. 08 Dec 99 - 02:54 PM (#146680) Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2000: October 20-22, 2000 From: Joe Offer Hmmm. The dates are good, although the weather could get darn cold by then. It'll give me time to do laundry after my September trip to Germany, and it's after leaf-peeper season so I can wander the east after the Getaway without worrying about finding lodging. Hold a space for me, Charlie. I can hardly wait. -Joe Offer- |

There may even be a few leaves left to peep at. Glad you, Vixen, and Tim liked us all well enough to come back! Kath |
08 Dec 99 - 07:07 PM (#146812) Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2000: October 20-22, 2000 From: Barry Finn Even this far off I can say barring disaster I'll be making the trek again, in a second, well maybe 8-9 hrs. Thanks Charlie, I think that's gotta be at least 2 hrs shorter than the last year, though it wouldn't matter if it was 10 hrs longer. Barry |

09 Dec 99 - 02:21 AM (#146984) Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2000: October 20-22, 2000 From: Charlie Baum Answers to questions: Barry and Suan of DT--It's a lot closer to New York, New Jersey, and New England than the old venues. JeffP--Day-trippers will be most welcome; you can come for the day and don't need to camp. Joe Offer--It will be the PEAK of fall foliage in that part of the country on that weekend. Everyone else--while we've set the date and the place, we still need to set the menu for the food, and then determine prices, so no registration just yet. But believe you me--we'll make sure you all know when registration forms are available. Hell, the local members of the FSGW who aren't mudcatters haven't even heard about the dates yet! You heard it first here on Mudcat! |

After showering and dressing, but before heading off to work, it is nearly imperative that I check the Mudcat. So, I have to be at work at 7:30 AM, I have a 45 - 60 minute commute, and I prefer to be awake when I drive. Hence, the alarm rings at 5:00 AM. Good thing old folks tend to get up early, right 'Spaw? If I cannot give the 'cat all my money, at least I can offer my undying devotion. Can you spend that on legal expenses, Max? I could not possibly get up early enough to check in BEFORE getting my family off to work and school. Once things quiet down a bit I can find a minute before I'M off to work. Sometimes before sleep. Sometimes a quicky in the afternoon. Whatever... We all get it however we can though, huh? Sometimes I'll get busy and go a couple of DAYS without. That's tough... Dani |

How could a dacent Irish gentleman turn down an offer like that?????? I wouldna want the poor dear FAIR ONE to have to go to a gathering and not have someone to fawn over her and take care of her every wish..............Why, I could probably even be convinced to make up some seafood delights if she would assist in the kitchen........and bring a dacent bottle of white wine..........necessary for the preparing, don'tcha know........ I'm just wondering though if you'll be do any singing this time around or are you gonna just talk your way through the weekend again, well maybe you could manage a few songs inbetween the sneezes & the snivils. If you come feeling a bit under the weather again I'll just have to mix up a old seceret family remedy (would've brought it last time but I didn't know you'd be feeling low). It's a poultice to pack on your chest, makes you sing like an angel no matter what, you could play that whistle of yours through your nose & it'd sound like Gabriel playing his horn, oh, one draw back you'd smell like goat sh&%$#@it for the weekend. Yours in playful song. Barry |

12 Dec 99 - 04:10 AM (#148436) Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2000: October 20-22, 2000 From: Charlie Baum Answers-- It's not clear yet that Debby McClatchy won't be doing at least some of the cooking. The camp will permit us to bring in a chef, provided she works with the regular staff. But whether she cooks or not, we've already decided to invite her as a guest!
Oh, another thing--about kids--since some people who hadn't been before didn't know last year--CHILDREN ARE VERY WELCOME, and there's lots of activities for them, so there's no need to park them with grandma or find a babysitter for the weekend. And since this new place has dance floors to die for (sprung hardwood floors!), we'd like to try to have at least some dancing as part of the weekend schedule. --Charlie Baum |

Since our first night will be spent in Rocky Mount with my flatpicker cousin and his fiddlin' wife, we could pick up Dani on the way! Charlie ... have you decided on fees, yet, or must we wait! Mick ... I'll bring my grandfather's terpin hydrate cough medicine next year, which will cure ANYTHING that ails you. Makes me shivver to think of it. moonchild |

Well I hope you can convince harpgirl into coming, it's hard to explain what a great time was had by all & while you're convincing her & getting Dani (that's a push as well as a hint Dani, hope you make it again) you might as well convince your cousin & his wife too, make it a full house. And I promise not to do more than about a 15 minute intro of my song for the "Music of the Mudcat" workshop next year. Anna P., if our gal from Oz makes it out to your place, I will make the meal, or at least some of my specialties. Wouldn't that be a hoot??? Maybe we could rent a big ol' van and do it up in style. The Waffle House tour of the coast!! Just among friends... I'm SO frustrated getting started on my banjo that I'm thinking of coming around to the guitar. Maybe by October I'll be able to accompany myself on a tune or two. Any requests? I'm a blank slate. Dani PS - I am an eyewitness. I was staggering to bed when I found y'all in the dining hall that Saturday night. Barry, Mick was indeed singing. And though I enjoyed every bit of your own singing as well, I'll have to give HIM the medal for at least LOOKING awake. Only his eyes gave him away. As time draws nearer, I can come up with suggestions on how to avoid the immediate Washington DC area (e.g., I-81 to Hagerstown, MD, I-70 to Baltimore, I-695 clockwise around Baltimore) |

Specifically, I'm working on "Song For Ireland" and "Fare Thee Well My Own True Love." There's a lovely song called "Mo Ghile Mear" and I'd love to learn it, but my prowess in the romance languages has not prepared me for gaelic. Dani ... That sounds great! I drive a Ford Tempo, which actually seats 3-4 pretty comfortably, however, a van sounds even better. Gosh ... we could even pick up one or two more m'catters on the way. Anyone interested? In the meantime, note my guesstimate last December (above) of between $110 and $150 per person for the whole weekend. Subject to revision. Less for children. Discounts for FSGW members. Your mileage may vary. --Charlie Baum p.s. While Ramblewood Camp might not require clothing, October weather in Maryland usually recommends it. |

I may have to sell some children(I have three so one or two less won't matter much)to pay our fare. Anyone out there interested in buying a teenage boy, healthy and with excellent teeth? I'll pay shipping. Fortunato |

Barring some disaster, I intend to be at this gathering. This damn election cycle may throw a bug in the works, but I am still figuring on it. YOU NEED TO MAKE THIS ONE FOLKS!!!! Amazing gathering of talent and goodwill. I sang and played and chawed the fat with a bunch of damned fine musicians and people. Even old Barry Finn was extraordinary. Life goes on on this end, but I still poke my nose in as time permits. Mostly reading without posting just now, but this will change after March 11 (caucus day) and I should be able to get back to normal. All the best, Big Mick |

19 Jun 00 - 12:02 PM (#244473) Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2000: October 20-22, 2000 From: KathWestra I saw Charlie last night, and the cost of the weekend is still being calculated. Once that's done, a registration form will be generated and registration will open up. My guess is that the form will come to FSGW members in their August newsletter. It will probably be posted on the Folklore Society website at the same time. (www.fsgw.org).
As most of you remember, we'll be at a new camp about 1-1/2 hours north of D.C. this year. Charlie and his committee are figuring out a pricing structure that will 1) assure that the Folklore Society meets its direct costs for the camp; AND 2) encourage people with families to bring their kids so that we can assure that the music is passed along to the young 'uns. His guess last night was that the FSGW member rate will be something between $125-$150 for an adult for the three-day weekend. Nonmember cost will be higher, but we don't know by how much. Kids will be less.
I'm sure Charlie will post details as soon as they're available. |

25 Jul 00 - 10:54 AM (#264256) Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 2000: October 20-22, 2000 From: Charlie Baum The good news is that everything has been figured out, and the details are about to be published in the FSGW monthly bulletin. The bad news is that the webmaster of the FSGW website is off at Folk Music camp this week, and won't be back until next weekend. Hence, we're going to have to wait until next week to mount the information. If you go to the FSGW Gewtaway Webpage, you'll find what's available, but the prices and some details won't be put on line until the first days of August. The same link will then give you all youi need to know. This page will give you details on joining the FSGW, and a membership application may be downloaded by clicking here. --Charlie Baum |
