Amazon UK deal of the day - ZOOM H1 £59.99

Seems to be lowest UK price by approx 10 quid for the next few hours...

cheapest seems to be £90 ish now.
And personally I would stretch to £114 and get the H2N. It has 4 microphones and it thus can compute as a shotgun microphone or record all 4 directions for later processing if you want. And many permutations between, even act as a tuner or metronome (which doesn't appear on the recording!)
I have an H2N and use a back-up covert(ish) recorder which, when you do the comparisons, is startling. In a room with many distracting voices, the shotgun setting is better than you recall (or expected). The back-up recording being unobtrusive but simple has more of the intrusion. Both produce mono, but in my case I am only interested in speech and one person.
About the only caveats are 1) the battery cover. If you hold the device too tight it rubs at the cover's joints and sounds terrible. I hold it gently! 2) Ending recordings takes a second or so to consolidate so if you press restart too quickly it doesn't start. This is fairly universal with recorders that can do justice to (say) music).

After my old H4 became unwittingly redundant (it can't take HDSC cards! D'oh!) I'm using my H1 for both studio mastering and field recording. In both senses it's more than up to the job, and I'm even finding the little HDSC cards not so fiddly these days.

Complaints? None really - it fits snugly into a modest microphone wind shield (though with the addition of one of THESE you can make any Zoom recorder look like a Cyber Troll). For protection on the hoof, a cheap sunglasses case is ideal - with room to spare for wee tripod, earphones, spare battery, wind shield etc. So all in all a winner.

Here's a field recording of me playing a Jew's Harp in York Minster Chapter House:

Amazon UK do have the Zoom H4nSP on offer today for £144.99. No experience of it myself, but the reviews look very good.
