He was a great champion of folk music in all its guises - through his Melody Maker columns, his own magazines and through his performances. Marched alongside him on the first Aldermaston March playing guitar in his group - there was a pic of us together there on the BBC's first "Folk Britannia" programme a few years ago; reviewed alongside him, he for The Times & I for The Guardian, at first Edinburgh Folk Festival in early 1960s; knew both his wives, Betty & Gloria. "Ripe old age" someone says above. He was only 85: just a year older than me; how ripe is 'ripe' and how old is 'old'? Adieu, Fred -- old old friend! ≈Michael≈ |

He had the great idea to write a book about song collector Cecil Sharp and composer George Butterworth. The idea was to focus on that August day in 1916 when Butterworth was killed in France, while Cecil Sharp was collecting songs in North Carolina. Butterworth had, of course, also collected folksongs in England and had danced in Sharp's demonstration Morris Dance side. I told Fred/Karl as much as I could about what Sharp was doing in August, 1916, and also mentioned that Sharp's secretary Maud Karpeles, who was also with Sharp in the Mountains,had fallen in love with Butterworth. Like I say, I liked the idea and looked forward to seeing the book. But, to my knowledge, the book never appeared. I wonder, though, did Fred/Karl actually get round to writing it. Or did the idea only remain in his mind. Does anybody know? |

It was certainly going to be based on fact and the interest was between the contrast of what was happening to the two friends on the day when one was in peaceful NC collecting folksongs while the other was being killed by a sniper's bullet at the Battle of the Somme. |
