Just read the news on Twitter that former folk journalist, singer song writer, and passionate political activist Karl Dallas has just passed away. No further information yet..

One of his memorable quotes was along the lines of "Folk clubs exist so that one day they will no longer need to exist.."

Very very sad to hear this news.

He must have at least lived to a ripe old age though, right?

Sad news indeed. He was a great champion of folk music in all its guises - through his Melody Maker columns, his own magazines and through his performances. He had recently been in hospital and posted on his FB page that he was dying.... he was 85. RIP Karl.

I have known him long; even since he was Fred before he decided to be Karl. Marched alongside him on the first Aldermaston March playing guitar in his group - there was a pic of us together there on the BBC's first "Folk Britannia" programme a few years ago; reviewed alongside him, he for The Times & I for The Guardian, at first Edinburgh Folk Festival in early 1960s; knew both his wives, Betty & Gloria. "Ripe old age" someone says above. He was only 85: just a year older than me; how ripe is 'ripe' and how old is 'old'?

Adieu, Fred -- old old friend!

I always thought of him as Fred Dallas, with Karl as being a kind of alias. Wrote some great stuff.

I don't like "ripe old age" - implies it's time to be plucked. Which I'm sure you aren't MG for a long time yet!

Sad news that he's left us - but while he was here he made his mark, contributing in full measure to the causes closest to his heart. He will be fondly remembered by many who share the same passions and values.

Adios amigo!

Why has this obit thread for an active folksinger and distinguished folk journalist dropped below the line? In what way is this a "General discussion thread"? Much puzzled!

Maybe somebody made a mistake, maybe me. With the recent sluggishness, it's sometimes hard to predict what effect a click will have. Fixed it. -Joe Offer-

Similar Mike - sad to hear this news; I always thought that he wrote about all types of music with great authority. RIP.

The last time I saw Fred/Karl was when he invited me to meet him at Cecil Sharp House during one of his trips to London. He had the great idea to write a book about song collector Cecil Sharp and composer George Butterworth. The idea was to focus on that August day in 1916 when Butterworth was killed in France, while Cecil Sharp was collecting songs in North Carolina. Butterworth had, of course, also collected folksongs in England and had danced in Sharp's demonstration Morris Dance side.
I told Fred/Karl as much as I could about what Sharp was doing in August, 1916, and also mentioned that Sharp's secretary Maud Karpeles, who was also with Sharp in the Mountains, had fallen in love with Butterworth. Like I say, I liked the idea and looked forward to seeing the book. But, to my knowledge, the book never appeared. I wonder, though, did Fred/Karl actually get round to writing it. Or did the idea only remain in his mind. Does anybody know?

Was the book going to be fiction, Mike? Sounds like a good film!

Ray, I'm not too sure. It was certainly going to be based on fact and the interest was between the contrast of what was happening to the two friends on the day when one was in peaceful NC collecting folksongs while the other was being killed by a sniper's bullet at the Battle of the Somme.
