I am looking for the words to Jon Heslop's song: Poor Murdered Men. As English is not my native tongue, I can't understand all the words just from his singing. Can anybody help me?
Kees

I can't find any lyrics for it online and can't find a recording of it either. If you could put up a link to the recording or something I can try my hand at it.

POOR MURDERED MEN
(John Heslop)

On the edge of a corn field somewhere in France
Birds sweetly sing, butterflies dance
Two soldiers are sat, call them Tommy and Hans
They sit and remember the war

CHORUS
"So we love the 'joke crocodile tears' and 'you're lies'
Sneer when you mention the great sacrifice
Poor murdered men, never lay down their lives
They're sent to be killed in the war"

Two soldiers in great coats, one khaki, one gray
"We both had loved ones left far away
And doesn't it seem bloody stupid today
To sit and remember the war"

"We've sat here for years, with form and with show
Reigning around a mad mud-caked hell
And with ev'ry explosion another friend fell
Another man murdered by war"

"Politicians first sat by their firesides at night
'Think they were puppies, make it alright'
Christ, I wish that we'd had just a few in our sight
We'd teach them who pays for the war"

Two soldiers in great coats, one khaki, one gray
As dusk gently falls to swallow the day
Into the shadows, their ghosts fade away
And leave us to weep for the war

Transcribed by ear from the link above. I had a little trouble with the first line of the chorus, so you might want a second check on that

cnd-

I hear just a few tweaks for chorus and following verses. I think it's:

"So we laugh at your crocodile tears, and your lies..."

"We've sat here for years, with bomb and with shell
Raining around a mad, mud-caked hell...

"Politicians first sat by their firesides at night
'Think paper poppies, make it alright'

Maeve, your corrections all make sense to me and sound like they fit better

The OP Guest may want to contact Jon directly (Jon posts on MC as a Guest). The following older post includes an email address supplied by Jon:

Hi, I'm Jon Heslop. Please contact me on redherring@unisonfree.net

I have a very few copies of an old tape recorded about 8 years ago, my tape of sea songs and stories is completely sold out (Like a Lighthouse Shining with Kathy Wallis), my book, An Ordinary sort of Man is almost sold out and I have about 10 copies of the last CD, with Kathy, called Not For Glory left.

You won't find the website as it's off line now and awaiting updating.

Both, CND & Maeve thank you very much for your help. I had tried the Red Herring website earlier but as you mentioned above it's offline. Now having the lyrics I'm fine. Thanks again.

CND did the hard part. :)

Kees- It just occurred to me. This is likely more accurate for the poppies part:
""Politicians first sat by their firesides at night
'(They) Think paper poppies make it all right'

(Jon is the only one who could tell you for sure. ;) )

Jon Heslop- If that Guest was you, perhaps you'd be kind enough to check the lyrics for your song, "Poor Murdered Men"? We'd all like to get it right!

(Moderators- Perhaps one of you kind folk would correct the spelling of Jon's first name, please? Thank you.)

This is as I hear it- just a few tweaks to the suggestions above.

POOR MURDERED MEN

Two soldiers are sat, call them Tommy and Hans
They sit and remember the war

CHORUS
So we laugh at your crocodile tears and your lies

Two soldiers in greatcoats, one khaki, one grey
We both had loved ones left far away

Sorry, sent words lost in the ether.
Noreen, you are quite right in your tweaks, that's wot I writ.
I've been away from home for the last couple of weeks and so would have replied earlier.
Thanks to all of you for your interest.
Jon
