Always been a lyric geek and as I listened, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I'd never heard of Warren, but had to have that song. Asked about him at the record store (a retail shop where they sold music on these big round plastic things) and purchased "Excitable Boy", saw the cover and the obverse and hurried home to give it a spin. Played "Roland" first, of course and then the title song "After ten long years they let me out of the home, an excitable boy they all said. And I dug up her grave and built a cage with her bones. Purely subjective and in no particular order (and by no means complete), Warren Zevon, along with John Prine, Frank Zappa, Kurt Vonnegut (the 20th century's Mark Twain), and George Carlin/Lenny Bruce, deserves the title of "National Treasure." Other 'Catters from other countries, I'm sure, can devise their own lists of "National Treasures" from their respective countries. |

In any case, he was right. It's a little ironic that he did shitloads of drugs and women, and died because of exposure to something when he was a kid. His version of Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" is the one I currently like best. He was recording "The Wind" and just decided to do the song on the spur of the moment. |
