Warren Zevon

I have been a fan for many years. I have LPs many years old. However, I never (how?) saw or heard this. Context... the man was dying. Until this, all ever heard was the "famous" stuff that sold millions of records. None of that ever revealed what I witnessed in this video. Many may know of what I speak. If you don't, search out his social commentary tunes of which few are blues or folk.

My Shit's Fucked Up.

I've liked the song since I first saw the video a year or two ago.

From the same album "Life'll Kill Ya" (2000):
Fistful of Rain
When your grasp has exceeded your reach
Then you put all your faith in a figure of speech
You heard all the answers, but the questions remain
Grab ahold of that fistful of rain
That's one of the few albums I don't have.

One of my all time favourite artists. I have all of his albums and a number of cds. I think my favourite song is Lawyers Guns and Money, but so many good ones. Great songwriter, great artist. I'm off now to put of few of cds in and have a beer with him.

Enjoy Every Sandwich - a bunch of his stuff done by other people as a tribute when he died. GREAT album!

I heard "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" while driving home from work one day, and it sounded like a celtic ballad to me, and so caught my interest. Always been a lyric geek and as I listened, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I'd never heard of Warren, but had to have that song. Asked about him at the record store (a retail shop where they sold music on these big round plastic things) and purchased "Excitable Boy", saw the cover and the obverse and hurried home to give it a spin. Played "Roland" first, of course and then the title song

"After ten long years

they let me out of the home, an excitable boy they all said.

And I dug up her grave

and built a cage with her bones. He's just an excitable boy""

I've been a devotee for almost 40yrs now. Mike

"Carmelita, hold me tighter, I think I'm going down...."

Purely subjective and in no particular order (and by no means complete), Warren Zevon, along with John Prine, Frank Zappa, Kurt Vonnegut (the 20th century's Mark Twain), and George Carlin/Lenny Bruce, deserves the title of "National Treasure."

Other 'Catters from other countries, I'm sure, can devise their own lists of "National Treasures" from their respective countries.

A song that I've played for years "Hasten Down The Wind" always draws looks from females in attendance.

"But she's so many women,

he can't find the one who was his friend."

can't imagine why...Mike

National Treasure list?

For the USA: I'd name Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Warren Zevon, Jimi Hendrix, Judy Collins, Jackson Browne...

And for Canada: Ian Tyson, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Lynn Miles, Leonard Cohen, Stan Rogers.

What sort of mind must one have to think "Roland the headless Thompson gunner" sounds like a Celtic ballad?

One must be driving in one's car so the traffic noise makes it sound like the words are Gaelic?

Sorry, dark road inland in south Florida, no traffic, can't excuse my mind, Fleetwood's rendition of "Matty Groves", perhaps, The tune and structure, not the words. Mike

I dare michaelr to ask about Fleetwood's rendition of "Matty Groves".

(I bet it's the Fairport Mac version.)

What I find interesting is that he was feeling something was wrong before he was diagnosed, so maybe his shit really was fucked up back then. In any case, he was right.
It's a little ironic that he did shitloads of drugs and women, and died because of exposure to something when he was a kid.

His version of Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" is the one I currently like best. He was recording "The Wind" and just decided to do the song on the spur of the moment.

Interesting, on a recent thread in the B.S. section you were "just a young girl". Am I missing something?

Yea, gillymor. I'm a 66yr old male, the young girl thing is from Martin's "Song of Fire and Ice. A young queen (Danereys Targaryen) prefaced her statements with that when talking to "older and wiser" men to make them seem like fools. Sorry for the confusion, I wasn't trying to pass. These day, I guess one should be careful with jokes. I must have been responding to Ake. Mike
