... which contains the words:
"Once I had and old banjo, I strung it up with twine,
The only tune that it would play was, 'wish that gal were mine'."

Thanks in advance,
Ray

could it be "Shady Grove"

Peaches in the summertime
Apples in the fall
If I can't get the girl I love
I don't want none at all

Shady grove, my little love
Shady grove, I know
Shady grove, my little love
I'm bound for shady grove

Wish I had a banjo string
Made of golden twine
Every tune I'd play on it
I wish that girl were mine

Shady grove, my little love
Shady grove, I know
Shady grove, my little love
I'm bound for shady grove

Wish I had a needle and thread
Fine as I could sew
I'd sew that pretty girl to my side
And down the road I'd go

Shady grove, my little love
Shady grove, I know
Shady grove, my little love
I'm bound for shady grove

Some come here to fiddle and dance
Sme come here to tarry
Some come here to fiddle and dance
I come here to marry

Shady grove, my little love
Shady grove, I know
Shady grove, my little love
I'm bound for shady grove

Every night when I go home
My wife, I try to please her
The more I try, the worse she gets
Damned if I don't leave her

Shady grove, my little love
Shady grove, I know
Shady grove, my little love
I'm bound for shady grove

Fly around, my pretty little miss
Fly around, my Daisy
Fly around, my pretty little miss
Nearly drive me crazy

Shady grove, my little love
Shady grove, I know
Shady grove, my little love
I'm bound for shady grove

Thank you both. That's what I was looking for.

That cameo performance by the Dillards was probably a response from the TV industry to the big success of 'The Ballad of Jed Clampett' as played by Flatt and Scruggs. It was the theme song for the American TV show 'The Beverley Hillbillies'. The Ballad of Jed Clampett' reached 44 on the top 100 pop hits list of 1961.
