Nigel Gatherer's forum

Nigel Gatherer used to have a forum about (mostly) Scottish instrumental music. It gradually stopped working - the forum engine seemed to be unmaintainable. But I see he's just got a new one going:

http://www.nigelgatherer.com/forum/

The old content hasn't migrated (yet, anyway). I've only just joined and haven't got my approval through so I haven't posted anything yet.

It looks a good bit better engineered than the old one.

You would not have thought enough people gather Nigels to warrant a forum.

I'll get my coat...

:D

In good company - you'll never make a living as a comedian and perhaps you should stick to Facebook.

Nigel has contributed infinitely more to folk music than you have to this forum and you're not even man enough to use your real name.

And I'd rather know somebody who gathers nigels than someone who farages for them.

LOL. Thanks for the heads-up. Nigel is an Internet treasure, glad to see he's resurfaced.

As a former member of the old forum, I have just spent the last half hour trying to get into it again, unsuccessfully. I know I am using the correct user name and password, but it keeps telling me I'm wrong. I won't bore you with all the details, but after multiple failures, I have sent a message to "contact us", which in itself took 3 tries.

Having said all that, I'm also delighted that Nigel is back doing great works after his trials of the last few months, and look forward to re-joining the forum eventually.

If you look at the members list you can see why there's a problem - the forum is getting deluged with membership applications from spammers, and Nigel has to decide personally who to accept.

My account still isn't activated but I did at least manage to set up my avatar.

Finally got my account activated. Nigel obviously has his work cut out.

Sent me an activation email but I still can't get in: says I've logged in successfully, but then says I'm still a guest, so I can't post anything: it then invites me to log in again - still "wrong" even using the new temporary password.

Guest Ray. I am Dave Polshaw, previously Dave the Gnome on here. Many people, including the moderation team, know that had you but asked. I am ashamed of neither my name nor my posts. I have no need to make a living at anything other than computer technology, which pays me very well indeed. I have contributed plenty to folk music having run a club and festival for over 25 years but have no doubt that many other people make much more valuable contributions than I.

Now, just maybe, you would have the good grace to tell us who you are, why you have taken it upon yourself to defend Nigel where he obviously needs no defense and let us know just how far up your own arse your head is.

Cheers

Dave

I think "Ray who?" would be an appropriate question...

It was obviously a light hearted joke on the part of "Guest IGC" . Just a play on words. He may or may not realise that Nigel is held in great esteem by those who know him and his work but I'm sure he meant no harm.
So no need for ray to overreact.

Trish,

I mentioned this on Nigel's forum too but the solution is to clear the cookies from your browser. The procedure will vary according to whichever one you use e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox etc.

You will have already found out(I think) that you can get in on other devices and browsers in the meantime.

I posted a possible solution to the signing-on problem on Nigel's site a few weeks back, so here is what I offered. It worked for me and seems to have worked for others who tried it and replied on the forum.

"Nigel, I have just gone to my browser - Mozilla Firefox - and gone to the Options/privacy/Custom Settings and deleted the cookies which were there under your site - http://www.nigelgatherer.com. When I went back on to the forum I could log in and am now sending this message! Hope this might help you and other members."

I tried that first and it didn't work.

I don't think anybody is going to get onto the forum without contacting Nigel by email.

Yes, you do require to contact Nigel to actually register but after that you should be able to access it OK once you delete the cookies.

The issue was that I (and others I believe) had inadvertently logged ourselves in as "guests". In my case, it was because I had tried to sign up on my own. We seemed to find ourselves permanently "logged on" in that capacity but deleting the cookies seems to rectify this.

Thanks to JK, Nigel and Johnny J, I have now finally got into Nigel's new forum. Yes, it was all about cookies, though I had to delete back to "since time began" to get it to work!
Then I found myself cookieless on here, so have logged back in! (Before I get told off for not using my real name, loads of people know who I am: nothing to hide, just that when I joined Mudcat years ago, most people used a pseudonym, in fact, were even encouraged to do so).
