Galoshans - who is performing?

There has been a wee resurgence in the performance of these traditional plays - which usually include music and sometimes songs.

The Beacons Arts Centre in Greenock had a Galoshans festival last Hallowe'en, and another scheduled for this October.

The Meadows Mummers have been doing Galoshans (and other?) plays / performances since - when? Fiona, Trish - - more info please?

The revival of the Burgh Hall Players in Dunoon and Cowal will feature a Galoshans in a couple of weeks time, shortly before Hallowe'en

I know there are other groups, including puppeteers, keeping the tradition alive----

Is it only in Scotland?

Are they all 'revival' groups, or were there still pockets of the tradition being kept alive somewhere all along-----?
(I know a guy who was raised in Port Glasgow, he is ages with me, and when he was a youngster they didn't 'go guising' but would ask one another 'are you going Galoshans?' - tho what they did was just regular guising, not a play or scripted performance)

Are there any older people who recall seeing or hearing of Galoshans being performed way back when?

--- Is this a correct Q to ask in this section of the forum?

Dave Francis, who now heads the "Traditional Music Forum" organisation in Scotland, once produced a version of "Galoshans" for a Christmas party at Aberdeen Folk Club which was excellent and much appreciated. That would have been around 30 years ago.
I've a feeling that Alastair Roberts may have been performing it maybe around 4 - 5 years ago. I seem to remember him due to perform it after a "Traditional Music Forum" meeting which I attended in Glasgow , although I missed it as I had to get a train back to Aberdeen.
Only 2 times I've come across it since the mid-1980s. It would be good to see it, and any similar "folk plays", make a comeback.

I joined "The Meadows Mummers" 2 years ago, an all-female group, but they had been in existence for longer than that, and with a number of different dramatis personae. I was originally co-opted as musician, playing short snatches of music (on button accordion) to suit each character, but have gradually had more speaking lines added. Our play is based on older texts but with modern and topical twists. Our prime mover is Fiona, who has made considerable academic study of the art and old scripts, and plays the strangest doctor you have ever seen! In January if thus year, we took part in the International Mummers' Unconvention in Stroud, Glos, England.
We have had a lot of encouragement from Stan Reeves (Edinburgh) who is himself involved in mumming too.

Ronnie Clarke. one of the founders of The Glasgow Ballad Workshop (check website and facebook page) has done some research and found a whole book of scripts; previously I had only seen some fragments in Tocher (School of Scottish Studies magazine)
Someone else I know picked up a copy of Brian Hayward's Galoshins - The Scottish Play in a second hand bookshop(EUP 1992 ISBN07486 0338 7)

I was wondering whether any descendants of emigrants to Canada, Australia etc would have family stories / memories of Galoshins, or if anyone has collected these?

Thanks Kenny for the Dave Francis info - I'll ask him about it!
Glasgow Ballads Workshop is looking forward to having Fiona, Trish and co - the Meadows Mummers - to perform in Spring, I think the last Sunday in March, tbc with Ronnie!

Anyone free to attend the Galoshins festival at Greenock's Beacons Arts Centre (near Greenock central Rail Station) over the last w/e of October should check the website for programme details.

Thanks Jack, yes I have--- and there's a number of people around who have a lot of knowledge / are performing / have turned up old collections of scripts -- - I just thought if I asked the question we might turn up some more nuggets of information, also heighten awareness?
Meadows Mummers are coming to perform at The Glasgow Ballads Workshop in the Spring, last Sunday of March has been pencilled in. Looking forward to that!
