Part of it involved me purchasing a package that contained 2 mouth organs - One in C and one in C#. In the dream I thought, what a good idea. Fasten both into a dual gob iron holder, one above the other, and you the ability to play in any key without using a button. May be a pig to play in some keys but has anyone ever done it? Again many years ago Ted Edwards fashioned a one string omelette pandolin. One omelette pan, one six inch ruler and some frets together with one string ............ and it worked. |

09 Nov 16 - 06:54 AM (#3819230) Subject: RE: Deamt up instrument From: Jack Campin Multiple mouth organs on a spindle have been around for a long time - Eddie Wallace from Glasgow uses one with all 12 keys (weighs a ton). 6 is the commonest; you can buy the spindles from Hohner (though my guru Iain Grant latterly preferred to put Tombo moothies in his, as they were better and cheaper). They are usually laid out in fifths; Iain's were Bb, F, C, G, D, A. Do the Bluebell Polka in both F and G and you can get through them all. If anybody ever found a reason to use 2 semitonally separated moothies the same way as a chromatic, it will probably have been Sam Hinton. I guess the difference between that and an 'ordinary' chromatic is that you can combine any keys - G/D for instance to play along with English melodeon styles? Difference between it and my dreamt up one though is the Power's one still has a button and single row of holes. With my dreamt up one there was no button and two rows of holes so, for instance, you could accompany yourself on guitar. You would lose speed but gain flexibility. I think! DtG |

Hinton demonstrates some clever stuff where he has four moothies in his hands at once and shuttles them sideways to get two in play at any one time. George Current once told me it is actually possible to blow and suck on a moothie at the same time - you can channel the exhaust back around. |

There's a warning in the accompanying booklet to stop playing it immediately if one of the notes ever goes out of tune, as there's a risk that the (metal) reed could then snap off and be inhaled into the windpipe. Yikes! does that ever really happen? |
