That sibling duo, who were wildly successful and recognized, did a lot to put Leon Russell's songwriting on the map. They recorded "This Masquerade" years before George Benson had a breakout single with it. Karen Carpenter's voice is the one I remember when I recall "A Song for You." That act knew quality songwriting when they saw it. I could guess that back in the day, a lot of people listening to the Carpenters or to MOR slash Musak sounds, would never have guessed what kind of fellow wrote those songs. |
