Check it out.

Lady Gaga and the WashPo call for a Phil Ochs revival... I'm all for it. My kids (21!) know the lyrics to most of his stuff.

This is a Mudcat thread I would have never anticipated - but if the cap fits... all power to Lady Gaga for acknowledging her significant influences, however remote they may appear to me/us on the surface.

I've watched almost zero commercial music on tv in the last 50 years , but have seen and heard Lady Gaga a few times. She seems Quite talented and versatile.

Should Lady Gaga do THIS version?............
or
This one????

....oh well...IF there's a buck in it.......

P.S. Don't you just LOVE Phil Ochs???

I thought he was awesome.....ahead of his time....and pretty perceptive, too!!

And IMO a much better writer than Dylan. Plain-talking, topical and original.
And humourous, on occasion.

Alex, there is currently running a documentary on Bob Dylan that gives great insight to his songs....I believe it is on PBS...Here's the info:

Bob Dylan | About the Film | American Masters | PBS
www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/bob-dylan-abo...

Bob Dylan Opens Archives For The Film, Which Features Previously Unreleased Footage From Dylan's Groundbreaking Live Concerts, Studio Recording Sessions, Outtakes ...

You should look for it...and BTW, Phil Ochs' material was a lot less self-centered than Dylan's...both were brilliant. The documentary blows the lid off what Dylan was writing about, that so many people, even to this day, have erroneously speculated their 'interpretations'.

Hey man, have a great day!!

Ochs is totally underrated. I'm glad Lady Gaga might get him some needed publicity.

I liked this comment from one of the youtube links above: "Its kind of heartwarming to see elements of opposite political extremes come together in their united hatred of a moderate centrist position." (The song is "Love Me, I'm a Liberal", which explains why it, of all Ochs' songs, was linked to).

It is very much a song of its time, a topical song, an historical artifact. Ochs was not singing in support of Sanders vs Clinton, or Clinton vs Trump, or whatever contemporary spin people want to put on it.

Ochs had great melodies which stand out as much as his lyrics

'Historical artifact'??...in lieu of what he was laying down about hypocritical ideologies????......

Talk about, "....whatever contemporary spin people want to put on it."

...and of couse he wasn't talking about, '... Ochs was not singing in support of Sanders vs Clinton, or Clinton vs Trump..."

Talk about, "....whatever contemporary spin people want to put on it."

You REALLY should give more thought about music than politics!

I actually recall -- this would be my childhood -- a television variety show, and Phil Ochs got to sing one song on it. Every verse ended with the words:
"and it seems that there are no more songs."
I can hear the tune to this day,
and I only heard it the once.

keberoxu, that song is called No More Songs, and it's in the DT.

Guest from Sanity:
Link does not work - please be more specific about the program
you mention. American Masters did a Dylan doc "NO DIRECTION HOME"
(1965) produced by Martin Scorsese. Is there a newer one???

There was a documentary film about Dylan's ROLLING THUNDER REVUE in 1975 "RENALDO AND CLARA" which has not been officially released, though there are bootleg copies offered. IIRC it contained discussion
of the Greenwich Village associations and rivalries, including Dave VanRonk and Phil Ochs.
