Odd thing is that it contains two directories - "The Columbia World Library Of Folk & Primitive Music" and "__MACOSX". The former contains 7 albums:: david@pan:~/temp/temp1/The Columbia World Library Of Folk & Primitive Music> ls -GThe MACOSX directory contains 7 empty directories with the same names. Maybe on a MAC this does something? |

Looking at the zip archive with the file manager, it shows the jpg album covers in its subsidiary folders. Having unzipped it, the subsidiary folders are empty, as Dave says. I never did understand Macs. |

Also it may be that spaces in folder / file names are a problem - they are usually replaced by underscores. The other precaution with zipped files is that you need a rock steady web connection; even a bit out-of-place can mean a corrupt file. I tried to download the source file - but if would have taken me 4+ hours on a moderatly fast connection. Don't worry about the mising folders / files - these are temporary for the unzipping process. |

This imiies that Windows doesn't like it. I suspect that this is because the folder / file names within it are too long or contain spaces. I suggest or request that anyone who has managed to unpack it uploads said files to Dropbox or WeTransfer. I did suggest to the original uploader that sepaerate files would have been a better idea. |

If Windows objects to the format, I would try extracting just "The Columbia World Library Of Folk & Primitive Music" and not __MACOSX. That might need a command-line program to do. I used to use 7zip on Windows - that has a CLI. Perhaps google "__MACOSX zip windows" or similar for suggestions. |

The png files are images of the cover and notes, including lyrics and translations. I don't see any hidden files in the directories (using ls -al in the command window) but the file names do contain spaces. Like others, I could not unpack these under Windows (10). I suspect it just doesn't know what to do with the MACOS stuff - probably by design. But I unzipped it with 7-zip, which is open-source freeware: http://www.7-zip.org/ I didn't need to use the command line. I right-clicked the archive file in the file manager, selected 7-Zip, then Extract Here. It extracts the __MACOSX folder too. Just delete it. |

I realised that my scanner wouldn't properly scan the liner notes so I went looking on the web for them and found a site where not only were the booklets uploaded for the lps, but also the albums themselves. I guess I always rationalise that it is unlikely that the folk program recordings would be made available in any fashion other than by someone uploading them. Would the BBC be likely to make them available for a fee? As Will Fly suggests, it could be worth asking. As for these Columbia recordings, they have been re-released as cds - thought not, I understand, with all of the same material that the lps contained, in some cases. I am pretty diligent - as, I suspect, are most people on Mudcat -in trying not to pick the pockets of working musicians. I guess some of us just get excited at the prospect of rare recordings being made available. But good to keep all this in mind as we hasten to share the music we love. |

If you have this checksum, from someone who has an accurate copy, you can check if the file you download is faulty or incomplete. It turns out that there is a built-in way of checking checksums in Windows, but it's well hidden. So in case it's useful in future I'll note it here. Open a command prompt: it's in the Start menu in Win 7, or in Win 10 type 'command' in the search box to find it. The command is certutil -hashfile complete-path-to-file MD5To find the file path right-click the file in the file manager and select Properties. If the filename includes spaces put it in quotes. Don't forget to include the file extension - eg .zip - which the file manager probably hides. So for this zipfile I type: certutil -hashfile "c:\users\david\Documents\temp\The Columbia World Library Of Folk & Primitive Music.zip" MD5Replace MD5 with SHA1 or whatever if a different hash algorithm is used. Linux users will know the command MD5SUM to calculate checksums: david@pan:~/temp/temp1> md5sum "The Columbia World Library Of Folk & Primitive Music.zip"I don't have a Mac. |
