My memory of Derek is me standing in the "air lock" by the stage with his guitar in one hand and his guitar in the other while he went to the loo one last time before he went on to perform. All this while the artist on stage was finishing his last number! We just made it in time. He was so nervous - until he was on stage and then he was magic! |

He was a guitar and banjo player par excellence and a singer with an eclectic repertoire. Along with Alex Atterson, Colin Scot, Noel Murphy, Alex Campbell, Redd Sullivan and Martin Windsor and the others, Derek was a regular guest at the clubs I helped to run in the late 60s and early 70s of the last century. He was an inspiration, a willing teacher and, I am proud to say, a friend. In recent years we only exchanged Christmas cards and the occasional phone call but I play his records frequently. Wearing my computer nerd hat, I was able to rescue a large portion of his autobiography from an obsolete Amstrad word processor. If you haven't read his two books, you have missed a treat! I've been dreading this news for some time-there aren't many of the old crowd left now. Farewell, Derek, you will be missed. My thoughts are with Jeannie and all the generations of the Brimsons who will ensure your immortality along with the music we can still hear and our memories. Alan |

I have only recently, while in the antipodes, been enjoying watching some of the stuff available on the web and promising myself that I would give him a call sometime soon. Alas not to be. Lots of happy memories though and some really personal funnies that I might share at some stage. Good on you Derek, now you can show Elvis how to play the banjo properly. |

He helped my introduction to the folk world despite some that should only sing in the bathroom on their own! On sending my Video of Banbury he called me "Thanks so much I cant see it myself I will put it in a draw for someone to find later" I hope they do. Bedworth as well but not now. Another of the all time greats gone to join Silvo, Disley, Felton etc. I knew Del ever since he first started in the 60s, and he played at all the clubs I've been involved with, from Surbiton in the early days to more recent stints in Coventry. I spent a fair bit of time with him at one of the early Gower Folk festivals and he had me permanently in stitches. I also remember changing the strings on his guitar for him, and having to get a pair of pliers to pull the bridgepins out, they were so tight .... The funniest joke I ever heard him crack was about Tony Capstick buying his wife a vibrator .... the ostrich joke was hilarious as well, as was the one about words coming out wrong. Can anyone remember the "cup of tea and a bun" joke ? I have a total memory blank about the punch line, although I heard him do it more than once. RIP Derek, you will be sorely missed. |

He was a mean cook and an even better friend. I remember him taking me to a hospital appointment on one occasion and we still have a cassette tape of him singing in our front room after my hubbie had asked for one of his songs. Good guitarist and banjo player, too. Had been talking to him daughter-in-law about the possibility of remastering his cassettes onto CDs; wish they would now even more. Did some agency work for him, and spent a fair bit of time with him. Even now, if I say "A cup of tea and a bun, please" to my ancient Mum, she laughs. Hard to believe he's gone, but I know he'd got very frail in the last couple of years; last spoke to him last summer... Bless him. The world's been lit by the joy he's brought to so many. |

I would have done anything for this lovely man, who set me on the right road to folk guitar that has lasted me now for more than 50 years. A couple of tales that show what a lovely fellow he was: A few days before the second Cambridge Folk Fesival in about 1967 or 8, where he was compereing, Del was walking trough an underpass in London, and heard the most amazing flamenco guitar being played. Being a former classical player himself, he followed his ears and came upon a young spaniard busking and playing the most beautiful music. He stood enthralled for a while, and when the guy stopped, he started to talk to him, but he spoke hardly any English. That was never a problem to Del, who had that wonderful knack of being able to communicate with anyone, whatever their language or lack of it! He told the spaniard that if he could get himself up to Cambridge, he would make sure he got a spot. The young man did just that and got a standing ovation from the crowd when he finished. That was the start of a glittering international career for the genius that is Paco Pena. On another occasion, I called at his house one day, and he was playing a tune I'd never heard called the Streets of London. Ralph McTell had given it to him before it was ever recorded, and he, most generously, gave it to me. I was singing it from the floor in clubs before Ralph's album came out!! What a man. I hope they've got a guitar and a banjo up there for him. |

So many happy memories from when I was a kid and Derek frequently stayed over at our place (my dad, Rael, used to book folk musos for gigs in and around Manchester in the late 60s/early 70s) and later when he came and stayed with us in South Africa when he toured here in '73. On a culinary note, besides the wonderful music, tall tales, endless laughter and magic memories, Derek also cooked a monster curry!
