Ozcatters @ 2017 National Folk Festival?

17 Mar 17 - 05:15 AM (#3845318)
Subject: Ozcatters @ 2017 National Folk Festival?
From: Sandra in Sydney

as JennieG said recently it must be time to start my annual thread, so here it is. 4 weeks to go according to the NFF newsletter which arrived today.

JennieG & I will be there along with Hrothgar, & BruceD hopes to be there too.

Who else will be there? Any overseas Catters booked?

It will be a cold festival as Easter is late this year, so the shops selling vintage clothes & South American woolly jumpers will do well! And the mulled wine & hot spiced orange juice will go down a treat, too on a cool night.

National Folk Festival site - check out the program!

looking forward to the National, there will be a big hole in the ranks of shanty singers with the death of Danny Sponner, but the plus side for this year the Hymn session is back in a decent venue.

Danny was programmed after the hymn session one year so I made a bee-line to him & he joined us (led us?) in Amazing Grace.

Community Hymn Singing with Hrothgar & his Beautiful Assistants, his beautiful wife Anne, the equally beautiful JennieG & Sandra in Sydney! Sunday 10-11.30, The Terrace.

Danny Spooner Tribute Concert, 12.10 to 1.30 Budawong, Saturday 15th April.

I've just noticed both of BMC's gigs are on at the same time as this - the Saplings sessions for young musicians 8-16 years (Billy Moran Tent, 12.40 to 1.40) + Australian songs (Session Bar, 12.30 to 2.40)

Accommodation Booked, for 5 nights. All that I have to do is buy my ticket.

My only problem with this year national is that the carpark in Flemington Road is not avaliable, and i don't qualify for disable parking.

only solution is to arrive very, very early each day so you get a good parking spot near the entrance, not at the far end of the only parking lot.

I'll be there with the mighty SeƱor Cabrales band of renown. We have performances on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Come and hear Asturian, Galician, Breton and some more predictable Scottish and Irish material. Give it a go! You'll love it.

Plus ...

I *facilitate* a Broadcasters Forum at the National each year for radio presenters, listeners, performers, record producers and anyone else interested in the folk music we hear on radio and, increasingly, on line. This year we'll meet in the Billy Moran Tent at 10.00am on Monday. Usually, the focus tends to be on the community broadcasting sector, but I suspect we'll also have a bit to say about ABC Radio National's recent scuppering of almost all it's music programming. (Insert expletive here!)

I hope to see lots of Catters at Easter.

I'll be there, and this year will be our grandson's first Nash.
You'll find me at Old Empire Band gigs, the Sally Sloane tunes workshop on Monday arvo, Settlers sessions in the mornings, the session bar anytime, and probably a late-night singing session upstairs when I'm too buggered to play any more tunes.

I'm exhausted just thinking about it ... but I love it :)

I'll be having fun running the Festival Bush Orchestra. A set of old bush tunes, plus a ring-in or two, arranged in 4 parts. Musos from all over are welcome to join in. Dots are provided and a quick ear player can have a go too. 4 sessions 3.20 each day of the weekend and a concert on the last day. Participation.... that's what a real folk festival is about!

Reading some blurb on the Oz National, I see they claim to have 50 THOUSAND attendees.

Think that could be a slight or even massive exaggeration for am event with the largest venue holding 3 thousand.

Bit of creative counting going on?

Some 12,000 each day, Friday through Monday. Sounds about right, give or take a couple of thousand....

Subject: RE: Ozcatters @ 2017 National Folk Festival?
From: GUEST,Curious guest

The other guest is not a mathematician then.

4 x 12000 EACH DAY does not mean c 50000 - I suspect most of those attending are there for the duration and should only be counted once!

As I said - creative counting - useful when you are looking for sponsorship.

23 Mar 17 - 09:02 AM (#3846290)
Subject: RE: Ozcatters @ 2017 National Folk Festival?
From: GUEST

Creative (ac)counting? Remember, we are talking about Canberra, Australia's home of creative accounting :-)

But seriously, I would imagine that they have to set a "maximum expected attendance" number for licensing, insurance and legal purposes, which is probably the reason for that figure. If all the planets align, that number is possibly achievable and justified.

Perhaps the claim in the publicity blurb could have been better written; maybe "up to 50,000 attendees" may have been a better way of phrasing it.

I doubt it has much to do with sponsorship. If numbers were to be vastly inflated, then there is a high risk that such sponsors would not come on board in future years, a situation which could spell the end of the festival as we know it....

If your concern is more than curious, then maybe a call or email to the office might get you some answers....

Subject: RE: Ozcatters @ 2017 National Folk Festival?
From: JennieG

But don't ring the office when I'm working there.

Several years ago I was told that the attendance for each day - season ticket holders, and day tickets through the turnstile - are tallied, and at the end of the weekend the total of these figures is reckoned to be the numbers in attendance.

I know people who buy a season ticket but don't spend all day every day at the festival; while in Canberra they might go to the NGA or the War Memorial, or any other of Canberra's galleries and museums. To them, perhaps, the folk festival is "just another of Canberra's many attractions", as the blurbs say. To each his own.

Hi folks, sad news for those who knew him, have just heard that John Fitzgerald or Johnny Fitz as many also knew him has passed away. Last saw him at the Dan O'Connell reunion in 2014 I think it was. He played with the Colonials, the Bushwackers and many more over the years. Vale Fitzy, we all miss those halcyon days of the past at the Dan, the National and around.

Cheers,

The Bruces rule OK!

Well, it would be a 'significant' detour from Bathurst to pick up a passenger in Perth on the way to Canberra, but the child bride and I have developed a fondness for Perth since our daughter and her fiddle violin moved to Perth a couple of years ago, so don't discount the possibility, Bugsy!

Our daughter escaped from the musical confines of "Dad's bush music" when she was about fifteen she studied fiddle violin at ANU in Canberra and I made sure she was exposed to the heady vibe of the session bar at the National Folk Festival back when there were traditional Australian / bluegrass / gypsy / klezmer / old timey / Euro-Celtic and any number of other musical styles intermingling in that amazingly vibrant space late into the night.

With the added bonus of a masters degree from the Uni of WA, she now earns a living teaching fiddle violin and playing in string quartets and the occasional orchestral gig.

A ride in your excellent company would be lovely, but I always attend the Folklore conference, so need to travel on Wednesday.

Default plan was to catch a bus & one of my mates will be taking my bedding & warm clothes. I'm staying in Tent City.

Bruce from Bathurst -

That's an excellent idea to visit your fiddler daughter before Easter one year & bring Bugsy & Mrs Bugsy to Canberra with you! I've been waiting years to meet him.

I always pack my raincoat!

All my warm clothing & various other things like torches & tent lights are packed in my smaller shopping trolley, & along with 2 big bags - 80% down quilt + sheets/towels/woolly underblanket (very awkward load!) will be taken by peak hour train to a friend's place on Thursday morning as he is a volunteer & will be arriving in Canberra on Sunday.

Then Margaret W. & I get the 8am bus on Wed with 1 bag each & arrive in Canberra before lunch.

and it's on!

Hi Wellsy, the funeral was last friday as per the notice in the Herald Sun at http://tributes.heraldsun.com.au/notice/381832021/view. I can't find an online Obit but can report that about 5-600 people came to St Gabriels, musicians and family alike. As might be expected there was barely a dry eye in the house. The Eulogy by brother Joe was great as was the session music both inside and outside the church. If I come across an Obit or similar online I'll post a link.

Cheers,
