Joe was a man of great conviction and integrity (and, at times, an entirely justified obstinacy!) who showed immense courage in the face of everything this world threw at him. One of the folk scene's real good guys (as well as a valued friend - thanks mate!), and a unique presence who will be much missed. We can be grateful that he finally managed to get his magnum opus Ramblings published last year - what better memorial! Deepest sympathies to Joe's family. |

When Joe did a house concert at Sinsull's in South Portland, Maine, USA in March 2009, he made several short videos of Curmudgeon (Tom Hall) -- the last recordings of Tom before his voice gave out completely in June and he was diagnosed with vocal cord cancer in September. Joe recorded Tom singing "Bound Away for Australia" and "The Battle of Bull Run". Joe was a fine and knowledgeable singer and a lovely person. I'm glad our paths crossed and I got to meet him. And I'm saddened by his passing. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. Linn |

Back in the day our next door neighbour used to drive him to various gigs and I used to tag along. Great days! He was booked many times at our folk club and he leaves behind many memories. I must admit he was a bit of a Marmite performer. Some really loved him and others found him a bit startling! However with his work with "Sweet Folk All" and his blog he added immensely to the folk world. Rest in peace Joe. |

31 Mar 17 - 12:11 PM (#3847831) Subject: RE: 2017 Obit: Joe Stead RIP From: Mick Tems Joe helped Calennig with our first American tour, through his friendship with the promoter Bud Manning; Bud lived in the centre of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, then moved out 40 miles away to Stowe PA. Pat and I toured America a score of times, from Arizona, Texas and Illinois to New England, Carolina and Virginia, and we are always grateful to Joe for his friendship and consideration. Joe also recorded my debut LP, 'Gowerton Fair', for his record label Sweet Folk All, and hired two session musicians - Paul Downes and Phil Beer! Two members of our band Swansea Jack, Mike James (melodeon) and Peter Davies (oboe) were also session musicians. Joe was no slouch, and chivvied us along; 'Gowerton Fair' was recorded in one day (and it sounds like it!) - but I still treasure it, after all these years. Joe had renamed his label Greenwich Village, and invited Calennig to record our first album, 'Songs And Tunes From South Wales' - in Leader Studios, with Bill Leader! Joe even released our second album, 'You Can Take A White Horse Anywhere'. The Folk World might consider him to be a Marmite entertainer, but he gave impressive and enlightened talks on his heroes, Pete Seeger and Paul Robeson, and his greatest love of all, shanties and tall ships. He sang with Kimber's Men, and his lecture (and CD), 'Valparaiso Round The Horn', met with critical acclaim. Joe was so much more than just another folk singer; he even stood for Parliament in the Calder Valley by-election! Sincere condolences to his wife Nora and his family; the folk world will never see his like again. |

After the performance, we went to the local curry house, where Bill asked if I could put Joe up for the night, as I lived near Plymouth Station. He was very appreciative that I was willing to let a complete stranger into my home to sleep. I was unemployed at the time and hadn't been able to afford to buy his LP 'Joe Stead, Live at the Whittlebury Folk Club', so Joe gave me a copy and signed it. I still have it. Even after his performance, he was a very chatty and funny man and had a good rapport with the other folkies at the club, many of whom were very good musicians and singers of the Plymouth Folk Scene, amongst them, the parents of the Lakeman Brothers; Sam, Sean and Seth. R.I.P. Joe Stead. A Genuinely Nice Man. Thanks for the Fun, Joe. |

Always enjoyed the 'Old Codger' emails and his book published last year. He sang for us at Southport Bothy many times. A good socialist, idealist, humourist and a great loss to the planet. He could sometimes be tetchy with me but we got on well. The number of medical procedures he underwent in recent years would've floored a lesser person way back down the line but even survivors have to yield in the long run and he gave his 'conditions' a good run for their money. I shall greatly miss the decent human being that was Joe Stead. |

We went to different schools after the eleven plus (he was smarted than me) but we kept in touch and both of us would hop the wag occasionally and go off for the odd adventure on my motor bike and even to a holiday camp in Brixham in Devon for a week. I last saw him when he performed in Tunbridge Wells. We had just a little time for a chat about those good old days but kept in touch via his 'Ramblings'. I have only just found out that he had died and I'm hoping its not too late to send my condolences to his family. God bless David/Joe. John |

The club survived for many years changing its name to Friars when it moved to the Continental Hotel. Over the years Bill promoted many folk artists such diverse acts as Jasper Carrot, Adge Cutler, Albion Country Band, Richard and Linda Thompson, Colin Scot, the list goes on. Sadly he died earlier this year (2020). |

I let into the carpark and we chatted later briefly he lived at Hebden Bridge at the time He also came to the club as part of KImber's men and guested at Cleckheaton ff ~I mceed latterly Ray |
