BS: border terriers

29 Mar 17 - 12:26 PM (#3847390)
Subject: why not a thread for border terriers?
From: keberoxu

My introduction to border terriers came from James Herriott the author veterinarian.

He wrote a piece called "Abandoned," in which he described driving a country road with his dog in the car with him, and passing a little border terrier who was running like mad to catch up with whoever had dumped him and driven off.

From beginning to end (the abandoned terrier is adopted and the couple who have adopted the dog bring it to "Herriott" for checkups and vaccinations) the little dog is charm on four legs.

I have never traveled to the UK but am told that BTs are very popular and often seen there. I get all excited when I spy a BT over here, but Cairns and Yorkies are far more common in the US, terrier-wise.

Have at it, everybody.

Almost everybody. I dislike all dogs with all my heart and soul, though I can weaken if the dog is friendly, quiet, under the full control of its owner (rare in this country) and doesn't jump up. It would also be a good thing if no dog was allowed out of its house unless it had undergone an enema first.

Aw that's so sad keberoxu. Who on earth could abandon a dog like that, and the poor thing running desperately after the disappearing vehicle? Sad chapter of the book.
Our employer at the holiday barn which we cleaned until recently had a BT. It was quite elderly, but very friendly. They had it to catch rats around the farm, as they sensibly didn't like to use poison (very 'green' couple) It was an excellent ratter, and enjoyed a real outdoor life on the farm.
Steve, are you friendly and quiet, and in full control of your owner by any chance? :) (And more to the point, I hope you have an enema before being taken outside!!)

Are you offering? 😜

If I rushed around outdoors and made loud noises, jumped up at people, cocked my leg up at every lamp-post and crapped at random in the street I'd spend the rest of my life incarcerated. Yet curs get away with it. And I pay taxes and dogs don't. I mean, how fair is that!

We get quite a few dog walkers going past our unfenced bungalow garden each morning, and many of them let their pooches wee and poo in our front border. But I don't want to turn into a savage, bad-tempered old witch, so I try not to mind. And I do love animals of all kinds.

Terriers aren't easy to train as pets. They're quite stubborn and can be disobedient. One of my elderly friends had her best boots punctured in several places by her neighbour's terrier when she visited them. They let in water now.

Steve, I think we'd better put you on a lead... and maybe attach a muzzle? :)

Our Border Terrier is a brilliant little dog. Wouldn't be without him, my buddy while my wife's out earning a crust.

People who don't like dogs arent wired properly. Never met a dog I didn't like but, on the other hand, I've met a great many humans I disliked intensely.

just to get back on topic:

"It was less than a week later that I opened the waiting-room door and saw an elderly couple sitting there with (the rescue dog) on the end of a very new lead. He adopted his usual gambit of rolling on to his back as soon as he saw me, but this time there was no helpless appeal in his expression but sheer joyous abandon with the comical little face split across by a wide panting grin."

Keb, I've met a few border terriers, and they're great dogs. Very high energy, very intelligent, and very stubborn. But then again, I've just described pretty much every terrier out there. They're dogs that need a job, preferably one with some mental stimulation.

Long ago we had a cairn terrier whom we named McDuff. McDuff was a wonderful little pet. We had taken him over from some relatives who were real yahoos, and he was SO happy to be with a gentle family that understood dogs.

Between having seven people in the family and having a big yard, he got the stimulation he needed as a terrier.

However, I recently came across a YouTube video called something like "Ten Breeds that have been Ruined since 1900." They listed white terriers as one. Too cute for their own good, probably. So if I were getting a border-type terrier, I would get a dark one.

Subject: RE: BS: border terriers

Well behaved dogs are tolerable.

However there seems to be, in the UK, a prevalence of thought that if you don't like dogs there is something wrong with you.

I choose not to have a dog because basically they are unhygenic animals and more often than not stink.

One of the pubs I frequent in the UK is like Crufts on occasion, with more dogs in the room than people.

One thing I have noticed here in Ireland is that very few people take their dog to a bar, long may that continue.

30 Mar 17 - 12:50 PM (#3847612)
Subject: RE: BS: border terriers
From: Senoufou

I think dog owners should be aware that some people are terrified of dogs (my sister's best friend was badly savaged by a huge German Shepherd dog when young, and literally trembles when she sees any dog coming towards her) Also, many people have allergies and being near a dog (or having one jump up) can set them off sneezing and choking.
Others don't like the slavering that leaves them covered in dog saliva. Or the odour (as Raggytash says).

I personally can cope with all this, and there's no animal I don't like (except spiders!) but not everyone feels the same.

Another point to make is that, as said by Ranger1, such dogs need stimulation and work to do, company and exercise. A couple up our street have just got a young border collie. They're out at work all day, then just take it out for a brief walk in the evening. The poor thing is stuck in a small bungalow, lonely and bored, and now they tell me he's 'getting nervous'. I suspect he's actually slowly going insane. When you see sheepdogs on TV doing such wonderful work, it's tragic that this collie is suffering solitary confinement. If only I wasn't so old and a bit frail, I'd offer to take him out, at least for an amble in the local woods. Why are so-called dog lovers so ignorant?

30 Mar 17 - 02:07 PM (#3847629)
Subject: RE: BS: border terriers
From: Backwoodsman

A lot of us aren't 'so ignorant', Eliza. We choose our dogs carefully (we didn't get our dog until I retired so that one of us is always here at home for him), we chose a breed with characteristics which suit our life-style, and of a size which suits our home (the aforementioned Border Terrier), he gets a minimum of two-and-a-half hours of walking a day, off-lead when in safe spaces, we spent a lot of time and effort in training him to behave properly on the lead, we are fastidious about cleaning up after him (even to the point of carrying a pack of wet-wipes to wipe up any unfortunate 'smears' left when we pick up his turds).

The thing I don't understand about **some** dog-owners is why they go to the trouble of picking up their dog's shit, and then hanging the bag in the trees and bushes, or throwing it down on the ground and leaving it.

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't mean to tar all dog owners with the same brush Backwoodsman. And you sound like perfect owners. It's just one sees such sad cases on Paul O'Grady's programme ('For The Love Of Dogs', about Battersea dogs' home in London)

Some people see dogs (especially puppies) as some sort of animated toy, then get bored with them and neglect them, or even abandon them when the novelty wears off. Makes my heart ache.

Oh, Backwoodsman, it's easy. If someone observes your dog having a shit, you have to pick it up. Once the observer has gone, the warm turd-bag goes into the nearest bush. If no-one sees your dog having a shit, you can just leave it. Bude's footpaths are plastered in dogshit, yet we're told that "it's a small minority of dog-owners who let the rest down." Well,if it's only a "small minority," there must be ten times as many dogs as people in Bude. It isn't a small minority at all. It's the majority.

And I honestly don't understand the mentality of people who cheerfully take their dog for walkies and doesn't mind (a) putting their hand inside a thin plastic bag to pick up a fresh, warm turd, and (b), to proudly lug that scrotum-like turd bag around until they find a bin. Frankly, I think I'd rather paint my privates in honey and let loose the dancing ants.

I'm just as outraged a you by dogshit left lying around for other people to step in, and I have firm principles in this regard. So, stop being an insulting cunt by trying to oh-so-sneakily infer that I only pick up when other people about. You don't know me, so keep your clever-cunt insinuations to yourself.

And as regards putting your hand in a bag and picking up a fresh warm turd, it's time you grew up, grew a pair of balls, and stopped being such a squeamish big girl's blouse.

Senoufou, why don't you give it a try - keeping the dog with you during the day. You might find it's good for both of you. If not, then not.

One thing is for sure - a border collie locked up 8-10 hours a day alone is going to turn into a problem dog for its owners and all the neighbors.

My own neighbor (age 75) had a mild stroke and became depressed. His wife went out and bought him a fox terrier. That dog turned his life around.

Here in Norfolk we have Norfolk terriers and Norwich terriers. Both are hypoallergenic, so good for people with allergies etc. I think farmers in this region needed excellent ratters, as in the past, rats colonised grain stores (we're principally a cereal-farming area) and both these breeds are excellent for controlling vermin.

JHW that's so sweet! Some people way up the top of our road had a little cat called Scooby Doo, and every morning when they let it out, it always zoomed down to ours to hobnob with our three Siamese. They all seemed pleased to see eachother. Sadly, Scooby Doo died of some unspecified illness. Animals of all types seem to like having 'friends'.
keberoxu, I'd quite like to own a dog, but my husband isn't too keen. He loves our cats though.

We've been married for forty years and, until 2013, we always had cats. It must have been us, but none of our cats were ever aloof and they all loved us to pieces. Our last one, a lovely fellow, died suddenly and very prematurely in September 2013. We decided to go petless from then on as we wanted to do the holidays we could never really afford before and we never had the heart to put our cats in catteries. We live in the middle of nowhere in a half-acre garden away from roads, surrounded by fields, and all our cats were in their element. They were all good mousers and, I don't know why, they hardly ever bothered the birds that we attracted with our bird-feeding station. I can't imagine that we'll never have cats again. It will take just one fluffy kitten to catch Mrs Steve at just the right moment!

I'm a small market town west country boy, i grew up on an estate with close extended family, and between us all sorts of pets..

dogs, cats, ferrets, hamsters, mice, budgies, myna birds, chickens, fish, toads, newts, lambs, piglets, horses...

uncle kept horses in his shed, and lambs in his kitchen.. until the council found out..

When I was about 6 or 7 he took me out for a drive to a pig farm,
on the way home I had to sit in the back of the van on a couple of sacks full of piglets to keep them still and quiet...

I presume he paid for them...???.. never saw them again....

Me and the mrs decided to stay childless and petless...

I pine more for never having a dog again than missing out on fatherhood...

Norfolk and Norwich terriers are relatively small dogs. Short legs. Border Terriers are recognizable in several ways. The dog's body is relatively small, but the legs are long -- the standard says something about "racy hindquarters"! which goes with those long legs. Borders can be VERY speedy.

And then there is the prized Otter Head.
Be it noted, this is not to be confused with Otterhounds, which are a separate breed. I had not heard of Otterhounds most of my life, I think they are scarce. Rather large shaggy ungainly looking, at least the one walking around at Westminster was.

Border Terriers, however, are sometimes bred to have a head that resembles that of a UK river otter, with the eyes a fair distance apart, and a broad flat squarish forehead. It's a distinctive looking head once you've seen one.

About tone - all we can do is ignore the folks who barge in, being vulgar and crabby. Think of them as somebody in the corner of the room who doesn't know how to act, and the rest of us pretend he isn't there.

That people like dogs I can understand, what I fail to comprehend is why they have to have them with them at all times. There is a time and a place for everything and dogs and pubs to my mind ought to be separate.

My face is scarred from a Labrador attack when I was four or five which has obviously tainted my attitude to dogs as have later bites and nips.

Leave the thing at home if you must keep one, not everyone appreciates their presence.

Sorry Raggytash, when I said 'anywhere' I was rather referring to either Heaven or Hell, as mentioned in the previous post.

I do understand people don't always like dogs, and especially in pubs and cafes. In public parks they should be well-controlled, as children can get knocked down by an over-enthusiastic canine. I had a lovely pat and stroke with 'Harry' this morning (a golden retriever belonging to a family of 3 children) and he's a darling. But when I got indoors, my black trousers were covered with his golden hairs. He's moulting! Now, I don't mind a bit, but some people might.

but makes sense to me to get some healthy breeding pairs of wolves
and start a long term project to create new breeds of dog
without the weak genetic health problems of Centuries of highly over inbred pedigree dogs...???

I'm resigned to never owning a dog again, but a genetically engineered medium sized wolf-like looking dog that doesn't drool too much,
or shed hair might be something I'd consider...
..and a bonus would be the intelligence of a border collie
and loyalty of an alsation, without the manic neurotic personality issues....

There was a breeding programme in Russia on Silver Foxes which aimed to mimic what was thought to be the process of Gray Wolves turning into dogs over years of contact with homo sapiens. A recent BBC TV prog pointed out that since perestroika they sell the tame foxes as pets to finance the continuation of the experiment. The viscous ones were also selected for as a control.

One thing that was reported was along with tameness selected for, their fur showed more silver in the black and the link shows a tame white one.

It has been said that the "dog" has a unique distinction in that the differing physiological and psychological variations that are exhibited are extreme compared to other animals.

I recall someone who was owned by a Border Terrier,
admitting that the dog was NOT diligent about protecting the premises from strangers,
because the dog was too sociable and loved people too much.

Once when there were uniformed strangers performing a task of some kind,
they laughed about the dog:
"If we had been burgling the house,
the dog would have offered us tea

Steve might have a '1/2-acre garden miles from anywhere', but the vast majority of cat-owners don't. Cats are completely untrainable, they roam around other people's properties, they stink, they are filthy little bastards that lick their own arses and then rub their shitty faces around people's legs, shit in other people's flower beds and cover it up for the garden-owner to get his/her hands in it, and spray their disgusting, evil-smelling piss all over the place, making everywhere stink worse than a Cairo khazi in high summer. I'd shoot the fucking lot.

And, before anyone comments, my first wife and I had cats for 20 years. Thank God I came to my senses and got a Border Terrier instead.

Backwoodsman, may I ask what is your Border Terrier's name, or is that classified information?

Does your dog like to do what North-American Mudcatter Donuel calls
"the horizontal grass dance"?
Love that term, wish I could take credit for it but I can't.
The dogs have the biggest silly grins on their faces
when they squirm on their backs on the ground.

Due to my rental apartment restrictions I could not have a companion animal, dog, cat, or otherwise.

Years ago, though, in order to get acquainted with Border Terriers, which are not so common in the U.S., I visited a number of breeders, each of whom had numerous dogs, and was able to get up close to lots of little whiskery faces, and to compare individuals.

Unfortunately even within the professional breeding arena, people have different ways of interpreting the standard to which they breed, this was brought home to me in observing all the conflicts at the dog-show level and comparing it to the various workdog contests.

Some breeders want a particular look and energetic response, and will disregard bad tempers, sadly, in order to breed pups that fit the picture.

There was one Border Terrier kennel that shall remain nameless. Went for looks and high-energy performances, and had at least one brood bitch who was wonderful with pups -- no matter if the pups were hers or not -- but fought and scrapped with any and all adult dogs.
By contrast, the breeders at this kennel got a chance to breed a different female of theirs, with someone else's Border Terrier stud, and sprang for it. I can't identify who bred the stud dog, either, not publicly. it remains to be noted that the stud dog came from a line of terriers with a really mellow, calm temperament (for a terrier), and in this line, they were one-track-minded when their prey drive kicked in on the job, but around other dogs they had been bred AND trained to have good manners, lots of confidence, and a healthy disregard for anybody silly enough to want to cause trouble.

I have never forgotten the occasion when I visited the kennel which bred a litter from this breeding -- the kennel with the mother, not the stud dog. From that litter there was one little Border Terrier who was now, himself, grown up and at stud. An intact male, mind you.

When I got to meet the dogs, he stood out, because he was so calm and collected that he could have been from a different species. All the other adult Borders were bundles of nerves, restless, vocal, and competitive. This mellow little Border Terrier man showed affection without getting his mainspring all wound up. If only I could have taken him home! He charmed the you-know-what out of me.

There was even a litter of little pups about, he was their sire. And he was brilliant at playing with them, as gentle as he was speedy, and you never felt a moment's unease that he might think they were rodents and want to break their necks or anything.

Last time I saw this little fellow, it was show time at a dog club arena somewhere. He just sat off to one side, with a big cheerful grin on his face, looking happy to be alive. I'll never forget him.

"Backwoodsman, may I ask what is your Border Terrier's name, or is that classified information?"

Not classified, Keb. He was to be 'Elvis' but, when we went to the breeder to choose our puppy, the breeder had named them all, and the one we chose knew and reacted to the name they'd given him - Baxter. It seemed unfair to change his name from the one he already knew, so 'Baxter' he stayed.

Indeed he does - more accurately in his case it's the 'horizontal carpet dance'! When we come home from his walk, or when my wife or I come home, he picks up one of our slippers, runs around the room with it, drops it again and wriggles on his back on it, with the silly grin on his face!

My wife is a member of a number of Border Terrier groups, and she says it's a common phenomenon.

Border Terriers were originally bred in North-East England, the Scottish Borders region for pest control, and for pursuing foxes when they went to ground. Hence 'Border' Terrier.

Well, I can't comment on Border Collies.

Border Terriers, however, are bred in kennels all over:
it is possible to find breeders of purebred Border Terriers
from Italy to Switzerland, in Scandinavia, and so on.
This is a current fact.
And it does not change the fact
that Border Terriers in particular have their ORIGIN in and around Scotland,
and this is true for terriers great and small.

If the preceding is true for the terrier,
why not for the Border Collie --
it is only logical --
that the Border Collie as a cultivated "pure" breed had its origins
in the border between Scotland and England,
quite some time ago,
and the DESCENDANTS of said breed can turn up . . . today . . .
in many places far from the Scottish Borders.

"The West Highland White Terrier shares a history with that of the Dandie Dinmont, Skye, Scottish, and Cairn Terriers; they are all considered branches of the same breed. The West Highland White Terrier originated in Scotland and was used for hunting fox, badger, and otter and for killing vermin such as rats."

"It is certain, however, that Scotties and West Highland White Terriers are closely related—both their forefathers originated from the Blackmount region of Perthshire and the Moor of Rannoch. Scotties were originally bred to hunt and kill vermin on farms and to hunt badgers and foxes in the Highlands of Scotland."

One of the favorite Border Terrier anecdotes I have read.

The account is related by someone owned by a Border Terrier or two,
and the human in question likes to garden.
At the proper season, the human will be out working in the garden,
while the Border Terriers frolic among, and sometimes flatten,
what is planted and growing.

One day one of the Borders suddenly became alert.
He moved quickly to a spot in the earth, growled at the soil,
and rapidly dug and pounced.
Then he spat out what he had unearthed, and left it.

And the human, who hurried over to investigate, found something
that humans rarely find in that condition:
a mole, warm to the touch, with no pulse, no movement, no breathing,
very newly dead. Quite dead. But still warm!

As though the varmint had died instantly, of sheer fright.
It seems that moles have a bad taste or smell, or both, to dogs though.
Which would account for why the dog dropped and left its prey.

A fellow-Border Terrier owner (who has a landscaping and gardening business and takes their BT out with them working on customers' gardens) has had moles brought back to them several times by their dog. If a BT is a hunter, it's a ferocious hunter - my BT hasn't a clue, far too lazy to be arsed with something so energetic as {{{swoon}}} hunting!

a Jekyll and Hyde personality,
with Hyde pertaining to the hunting mode.

I was blessed with a close encounter recently with someone's pet Border Terrier.
The human and the pet dog, both females, strolled up the sidewalk.
When I came close to them, I said,
"That looks like a Border Terrier."
"It IS a Border Terrier," came the reply.
And upon inquiring, I learned that the kennel from which the dog came
is barely one mile down Main Street!

She was a lovely youngster, three years old according to the owner.
She sniffed one hand out of curiosity,
and then, much like a pet cat,
she brushed the side of her head against my hand.
I was charmed.

I had forgotten all about this thread but in response to "People who don't like dogs arent wired properly" I asked the question "I don't mind them but prefer cats. What does that make me?" but never got a reply.

I did notice in passing this time that the poster who made the first comment went on to say "Cats are completely untrainable, they roam around other people's properties, they stink, they are filthy little bastards that lick their own arses and then rub their shitty faces around people's legs, shit in other people's flower beds and cover it up for the garden-owner to get his/her hands in it, and spray their disgusting, evil-smelling piss all over the place, making everywhere stink worse than a Cairo khazi in high summer. So Backwoodsman. If you believe that there is something mentally wrong with me because I don't particularly like dogs, what are your views on someone who admits that they would exterminate an entire species?

Point of order: cats *can* be trained. We've been privileged to be staff to five now; every single one of them learned (in short order) that me whistling as if to summon up a taxi means dinner's served. Call them Pavlov's mogs if you will, but IMHO that counts as training.

No, neither trolling nor fighting. I just have an aversion to being told that I am not "wired properly" because I am not overly fond of dogs and having harm wished on all cats. I do consider you a friend, John, but if you believe there is something mentality wrong with me and wish to exterminate my pets then maybe we need to rewind a little. Do you really think there is something wrong with people who are not fond of dogs? Would you really like to "shoot the fucking lot" when it comes to cats? If not, then perhaps you could explain why you said these things. If you do believe it, please feel free to consider me unfriended.

Dave, my comment was in retaliation for venomous aggression and unjustifiable accusations against myself and other dog-owners made by someone other than yourself, and it was made in a moment of justifiable anger. Not only that, it was made over four years ago, and I have made no further reference to it on this thread, even though I have continued to have perfectly friendly discussions with others here.

I got over it and chose to avoid further conflict at that time. After four years, it’s high time you did the same.

Sorry all. It was wrong of me to resurrect an argument from over 5 years ago. I will just say one more thing and then duck out. Not being overly fond of dogs but never wishing harm on any living thing I was offended by both of BWMs remarks. Not that I ever would but if I was to say people who love dogs must be mentally deranged or that I would have all dogs put down I would, quite rightly, be shot down in flames. I am sure John does not really believe the things he said and should have just put them down to a fit of pique. Please put my remarks down to the same.

Earlier in this thread - MUCH earlier- a remark was made that was a bit derogatory toward veterinarians. I would just point out that vets have among the highest rates of suicide among the caring professions. It appears that losing, or having to put down, so many of their patients is very hard on their psyches. Ever since I read that stat, I've felt much more empathy toward veterinarians.

Treatment/putting an animal down at the vet's can indeed be expensive, but fully-qualified vets have had a very long University course to complete, similar to the Med School courses. Also, most vets have additional work to do at farms, testing cattle etc for TB and treating outbreaks of various diseases.
They also have to deal with grief-stricken pet-owners after putting their pet to sleep. I have had experience of wonderful vets many many times, and have always been grateful for their expertise, knowledge and compassion. To complain about charges (as many people do) is rather mean in my view.
