Lyr Add: Suite Judy Blue Eyes: strange last part

Concerning Crosby Stills & Nash's "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" and the raucous singing at the end: After some considerable listening and thinking, and conferring with a girl from Puerto Rico, I think this is what he sang into the can:

Kay leeeeenda may-a vaya pa' Cuba,
La ray-eena de la mar Caribe.
Quiero so-lo visitarme allí,
Y que tee-stay que no puedo vaya.   Ah ha! Ah ha!
                           (like a pirate's parrot cackling)

What I think he was trying to say was

Que linda que me fuera pa' Cuba,
La reina de la mar Caribe.
Quiero solo a visitarme allí,
Y que triste que no pueda. Ay! Ay!

Which would have meant,

How nice if I could head for Cuba,
The queen of the Caribbean Sea
All I want is to go visit there
And how sad that I can't. Ah, ah! (lamenting)

The rhyme scheme (in Spanish) this way is quite elegant, A B B A, putting "la mar Caribe" against "visitarme allí", which is nice, and "pa' Cuba" against "no pueda", which is poignant.

As can be seen, it's actually a lament over Cuba being closed to travel for so long. A lot of songs have expressed such things.

The deviations in Steven Still's first and fourth lines are not just Gulf Spanish, they are crazy grammar mistakes, altho Still's accent is OK.

From: GUEST,I get your point, however...

I see your point re: Stills' bad Spanish grammar, etc, but bear in mind that lots of people believe they know how to say things in Spanish and other languages.

They think so because they are speaking what they HEARD someone teach them, rather than what the speaker was actually trying to teach.

The familiar present "how are you?" in Spanish is "¿como estás?" - but I knew a person who spoke not a word of real Spanish otherwise who claimed that she KNEW that it was pronounced

"COMA-sauce", as one word, with the emphasis on the first syllable, "COMA",

because that's what she heard when she asked a co-worker how to say it.

She was absolutely confident that "COMA-sauce" was the correct pronunciation, emphasis and everything.

There are discussions of this on various websites, e.g., http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=236445 where a few transcriptions and translations are offered. It says Stills varied the lyrics when performing live, but the recorded version goes

¡Que linda! Me recuerda a Cuba
La reina de la Mar Caribe
Quiero sólo visitarla allí
Y que triste que no puedo. ¡Vaya!
O Va! O Va!

Another poster in that thread gives

Que linda me la traiga Cuba,
la reina de la Mar Caribe.
Cielo sol no tiene sangreahi,
y que triste que no puedo vaya,
Oh va, oh va, va.

Loosely translated that is:

How happy it makes me to think of Cuba,
the smiles of the Caribbean Sea,
Sunny sky has no blood, and how sad that
I'm not able to go
Oh go, oh go go

but also offers the translation,

What beauty Cuba brings me,
The queen of the caribbean Sea,
There's no blood in the sun or sky.
Oh, how sad I cannot go.
Oh go, oh go, go.

Then someone else suggests a better translation of the last part would be

The heavenly sun has lost its blush.
It is sad that I cannot go.

Typing

into Google will get you any number of other discussions.

I like both those translations.
The only part I can translate is "Doo doo doo doo dooo, Doo doo doo doodoodoo"

SUITE: JUDY BLUE EYES
(Stephen Stills)

It's getting to the point
Where I'm no fun anymore
I am sorry
Sometimes it hurts so badly
I must cry out loud
I am lonely
I am yours, you are mine
You are what you are
And you make it hard-

Remember what we've said and done and felt
about each other
Oh babe, have mercy
Don't let the past remind us of what we are not now
I am not dreaming.
I am yours, you are mine
You are what you are
And you make it hard-

Tearing yourself away from me now
You are free and I am crying
This does not mean I don't love you
I do, that's forever, yes and for always
I am yours, you are mine
You are what you are
And you make it hard-

Something inside is telling me that
I've got your secret. Are you still listening?
Fear is the lock, and laughter the key to your heart
And I love you.

I am yours, you are mine, you are what you are
And you make it hard-
And you make it hard-

Friday evening, Sunday in the afternoon
What have you got to lose?
Tuesday morning, please be gone I'm tired of you.
What have you got to lose?
Can I tell it like it is? Help me I'm sufferin'
Listen to me baby-Help me I'm dyin'
It's my heart that's a sufferin', it's a dyin'
That's what I have to lose
I've got an answer
I'm going to fly away
What have I got to lose?
Will you come see me
Thursdays and Saturdays?
What have you got to lose?

Chestnut brown canary
Ruby throated sparrow
Sing a song don't be long
Thrill me to the marrow
Voices of the angels ring around the moonlight
Asking me, said she so free
How can you catch the sparrow?
Lacy, lilting, lady, losing love, lamenting

Change my life, make it right
Be my lady.
Doo doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo doo doo

Que linda me la traiga Cuba,
la reina de la Mar Caribe.
Cielo sol no tiene sangreahi,
y que triste que no puedo vaya,
Oh va, oh va, va.

I checked this - I think the lyrics are quite accurate.
